Jutras, Elizabeth 10 February 2024 (has links)
“Socrates, it is said, did not attend to tragedies,” wrote Clement Rosset in his book Tragic Philosophy. According to the American philosopher Martha C. Nussbaum, it is specifically this anti-tragic impulse that has characterized philosophy since Plato. In the nineteenth century, the Nietzsche of The Birth of Tragedy had already declared the murder of tragedy by philosophy; although Nussbaum generally agrees with the diagnosis of the German philosopher, she adds an innovative element to it. Indeed, she sees in Aristotelian philosophy a breach in tradition: a counterargument to Platonist theory as well as a continuity of tragic thought. Aristotle, the first great thinker of tragedy, had already given an important role to fortune (tuchè) in his ethical theory. However, this ontological vulnerability, that is the fact that human beings are to a certain extent at the mercy of forces beyond their control, a phenomenon that we will try to think of as the tragic content of existence, would be precisely what, according to our author, would make it possible to found a contemporary philosophy that is “fully human”. However, in order to apprehend this tragic component, the perceiving being must present an organization of the world that allows him to see it as such. For Nussbaum, this reconfiguration of experience would be possible through imagination; more specifically, through literature. Moreover, the moral imagination hereby proposed by our author is, specifically, the encounter with life’s fundamentally tragic components. We can therefore say that, by relying on the Aristotelian method as well as on tragic experience, Nussbaum belongs to a tradition that addresses the notion of moral imagination and makes a rich and particular contribution to it.

Late Quaternary vegetation history of Craven, Yorkshire Dales

Rushworth, Garry January 2010 (has links)
This thesis investigates new late Quaternary vegetation records from four sites in the Craven District of the Yorkshire Dales. The chosen sites fall along an east-west transect broadly following the line of the south Craven Fault. The rationale for site selection was not based on conventional palynological considerations of potential for rich core samples, rather to provide a range of different locations within a distinct micro-region each existing in some specific proximity to known archaeological features. The logic was to attempt to get beyond broad 'natural' climatological and vegetational inferences to understand the nature and level of potential anthropogenically produced change at a local scale as a sub-set of natural change in a broader regional zone over time. The sites reveal varied vegetation histories from the Late Glacial period to the present day and all show signs of being influenced by changes in their arboreal structure at some time, although no two sites have exactly the same vegetation communities until around 5000 BP when the tree canopy is opened to allow an open grassland to dominate. The results indicate the possibility that Betula values, in particular, might indicate cooling events found in the Greenland ice cores for Greenland Interstadial 1 as well as the Pre-boreal Oscillation and the Holocene 9.3 ka BP Event. Closer chronological control of such values could help to determine whether vegetational dynamics were synchronous with fluctuations in temperature and the speed with which trees respond to severe temperature fluctuations. Various hiatuses identified during analysis of the cores may be caused by human influence on the wetlands, given that archaeological evidence from caves shows human occupation of the Craven area from the late Upper Palaeolithic onwards.

Indústria cultural, repetição e totalização na trilogia Pânico / Culture industry, repetition and totalization in the Scream trilogy

Ponte, Charles, 1976- 19 August 2018 (has links)

That way, regarding the American cinema as the main representative of filmic entertainment, it is natural that its homogenization is more intense, an aspect conveniently overlooked by specialized critiques, since they tend to emphasize, correctly, those films of higher complexity, ultimately deluding readers about the actual percentage of quality works. Thus, the objective of this dissertation is to observe the composition of one of these usually non critically contemplated ones, the horror trilogy Scream (1996; 1998; 2000), directed by Wes Craven, starting by the close reading of its main structural components - plot, characters, setting and point of view - and comparing it to others pertaining to the same subgenre, in order to verify the existence of a dialectic tension of approximation or distancing to the standardized diegetic forms and how these movements are related to product selling strategies. For doing so, this work makes use of a body of theories from multiple areas, from literature and film studies to the group of thinkers encapsulated under the alias Theory, but always permeated by Adorno and Horkheimer's concept of culture industry (1985), and by Adorno's further elaborations on the theme (2001). In the corpus, on the one hand the tension between formal repetition and its rearrangement occurs in all selected components, so that the trilogy remains as a member of the slasher subgenre, at least in its surface, despite containing a great amount of hybridization, notably by the structuring of its main characters, heroin and monster, as well as part of its découpage; on the other hand, there is a number of innovations attributed to the trilogy, especially the presence of a varied metafictional vein, rare in all of the horror genre, but also the lessening of violently graphic scenes. However, it can be confirmed, through the interpretation of results, that the allowed modifications never threaten the breaking of the fourth wall, or even the audience expectations for the films, in a way that practically all alterations should be considered as controlled to emulate a fallacious novelty / Doutorado / Literatura e Outras Produções Culturais / Doutor em Teoria e História Literária

From fiction to phronésis : a critical dialogue with Martha Nussbaum on the importance of concrete fictional literature in moral philosophy

Lourens, Hesti 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil (Philosophy))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study finds its roots in the ancient quarrel, as mentioned by Plato 400 BC, between poets (artists) and philosophers on the nature of our ethical existence. The ancient philosophers participating in the ancient quarrel, such as Plato, had a metaphysical understanding of our existence and they believed that we should communicate about our ethical existence through a style which acknowledges the transcendental nature of our human existence. The styles and language used by the philosophers of the ancient quarrel were therefore often very abstract, and mostly concerned with the rationality of human reasoning. The ancient poets participating in this quarrel, however, did not share the metaphysical worldview of their philosophical rivals. They denied the transcendental nature of our existence, and argued that our ethical existence should be portrayed and communicated through a style which acknowledges the fact that we are humans with a concrete existence. The poets of the ancient quarrel also promoted a style which acknowledges humans as beings with both rational and emotional faculties. It is for this reason that we find today in literature concerned with moral matters, both the abstract style of moral philosophy which is concerned with the rational aspects of our existence, and the concrete style of fictional literature which is concerned with the emotive aspects of our existence. The quarrel on how to communicate about the nature of our ethical existence is, however, an ongoing debate which is still prevalent in our modern times. This study turns to the modern argument of Martha Nussbaum on how to communicate about the nature of our ethical existence. Nussbaum argues that the abstract style of philosophical texts on morality acknowledges the abstract and rational aspects of our human nature and existence, but that it often fails to fully acknowledge the fact that we are concrete human beings for whom emotions play an integral part in our ethical existence. She therefore believes that moral philosophy should be presented in combination with fictional literature in order to give a true and complete picture of our ethical existence. This study thus enters into a critical dialogue with Nussbaum on her proposal to combine fictional literature with moral philosophy. Accordingly, this study focuses on three specific aspects of our ethical existence, which Nussbaum argues, are acknowledged through fictional literature such as novels, but not through the typical style of abstract moral philosophy. They are; 1) that human values are plural and often incommensurable; 2) that the particulars of situations play an important role in ethical deliberation; and 3) that human emotions and the imagination form a big part of our ethical existence. The fundamental aim of this study is thus to answer the question whether the style of fictional literature actually acknowledges the three above mentioned aspects of our ethical existence. The novel which is used to determine this is Alan Paton’s Cry the Beloved Country. Nussbaum classifies the three above mentioned aspects of our ethical existence as 1) The Non- Commensurability and Plurality of Values; 2) Priority of the Particular; and 3) Ethical Value of the Emotions and Imagination. These three aspects are, however, derived from Aristotle’s ethics and they form, as Nussbaum has argued, the bases of the Aristotelian ethical position – a position from which practical knowledge can be obtained. The aim of this study is therefore not only to determine whether certain fictional literature acknowledges the three fundamental aspects of the Aristotelian ethical position, but it also aims to answer the question whether the Aristotelian ethical position (and therefore practical wisdom) can be obtained through the reading of fictional literature such as novels. The study concludes that some fictional literature, such as the novel Cry, the Beloved Country, does in fact adequately portray the three fundamental features of the Aristotelian ethical position, and that Nussbaum’s proposal should receive serious consideration, since the inclusion of some fictional literature into moral philosophy my lead to deeper ethical understanding from which practical wisdom can be obtained.

Skipton-in-Craven, 1865 to 1914 : a study of urban growth in a small textile town

Jackson, Kenneth Christopher January 2011 (has links)
The catalyst for the urban growth of Skipton during the formative period of the modern town between 1865 and 1914 was indigenous investment and organisational change in cotton textiles in the aftermath of the Cotton Famine. Railway investment also played an important, although lesser part. The process was facilitated notably by the relaxation of policy on land tenure by the principal landowner and by the work of a well managed local authority. The resulting net in-migration, along with the internal redistribution of population necessitated by the extension of commercial and other services in the town centre, was accommodated by house building in clusters which were either aligned with or removed from the main factory sites. This gave rise to a distinctive pattern of social and spatial segregation, the distribution of which was governed principally by the need for factories to have access to water supplies for steam raising and condensing. Thus the canal corridor beyond the existing built-up area was subject to textile colonisation while wholly residential development was more closely associated with existing high status housing elsewhere. The study considers the processes involved in creating this pattern of development with particular reference to the values and activities of the principal decision-makers. It also discusses the resultant shift in power and influence from the principal landowner to the local authority and to industrial and commercial interests which increasingly were based outside the town. Arising from this a model of urban growth is proposed and tested against neighbouring small textile towns.

García Rojas, Diana Lucía 11 August 2017 (has links)
Tesis
