'My brain will be your occult convolutions' : toward a critical theory of the biological body

Van Ommen, Clifford 11 1900 (has links)
This project forms part of a growing engagement with biology by critical psychology and, more broadly, body studies. The specific focus is on the neurological body whose dogmatic exclusion from critical endeavours is challenged by arguing that neuroscience offers a vital resource for emancipatory agendas. Rather than conversely treating biology as a site for the factual supplementation of social theory the aim is to engage (negotiate) with neuroscience more directly and critically. In this process a discursive reductionism and attempted escape from complicity associated with critical psychology are addressed. Similarly a naïve and apolitical empiricism claimed by neuroscience is disrupted. The primary objective is however to demonstrate the utility of neuroscience in developing critical theory. These objectives are pursued through the ‘method’ of deconstruction, (mis)reading several highly regarded neuroscience texts written by prominent neuroscientists, working within the convolutions of these texts so as develop openings for critical conceptualisations of (neural) corporeality. In this manner the various spectres associated with neurology, including essentialism, determinism, individualism, reductionism and dualism, are displaced. This includes, amongst others, the omnipresent mind/body and body/society binaries. The (mis)readings address a number of prominent themes associated with contemporary neuroscience: Attempts at specifying an identity for (part of) the brain are shown to rely on a necessary relationship with the excluded other (such as the body, the socio-cultural, and the environment). Similarly, attempts at articulating a centre, a point from which agency can proceed, which finds existing identity in the functions of the prefrontal cortices, are also undone by the (multiple, affective, and unconscious) other which decentres the centre by being the essential supplement for any such claims. The causal metaphysic must likewise proceed within the play of différance, a logic of difference and deferral that undermines causal routes, innate origins and autocratic centres. Finally, reductionism must advance as a necessary strategy through which to engage with complexity, its ambitions always impossible as the aneconomic is forever in excess of any economy. The emancipatory viability of such (mis)readings is discussed within a context where the open and malleable body has been co-opted by contemporary neo-liberal geoculture. / Psychology / D.Litt. et Phil. Dominance and marginality in community psychology knowledge production : a critical analysis of published work.

Graham, Tanya Monique 04 September 2014 (has links)
The current global formation, characterised by a burgeoning knowledge economy alongside widespread social discontent and economic upheaval, situates the study of knowledge production in the field of community psychology at a timely socio-historical juncture. Community psychology has a long-standing tradition of introspection about its identity, achievements and future direction, established historically through the analysis of published work. This research engages with this tradition, foregrounding the intellectual role and social position of scholars in the field, and the tensions that are collectively evident their work. The study critically appraises the characteristics of published work over a decade with a view to distilling the topics of interest, the preferred methodological choices and the predominant theoretical concerns of the sub-discipline of community psychology. The study employs a mixed methodology to highlight patterns of dominance and marginality in these elements that situates South African scholarship in the field within the global arena. The study presents a content analysis of trends in 2 229 published articles drawn from two local South African journals (South African Journal of Psychology and Psychology in Society) and four international journals (American Journal of Community Psychology, Journal of Community Psychology, Journal of Community and Applied Social Psychology and Journal of Prevention and Intervention in the Community) that were published between 1 January 2000 and 31 December 2009. Among the variables investigated in the quantitative data analysis were constitutive of the authorship characteristics, publication types, topics, theoretical choices, research methods and participant characteristics appearing in published work, including the representation of marginalised groups. The discursive analysis that follows, presents an in-depth reading of selected texts drawn from this dataset though the use of a critical discursive frame to illustrate of how power and the tensions between dominant narratives and marginal positions in community psychology manifest in published work. This serves to foreground contradictions in the identity, values and foci of the field, and some of the discourses implicated in how these disparities are perpetuated. The thesis contends that knowledge production is a contested site where attention to patterns of dominance and marginality reveal how the workings of power can be detected using both quantitative and qualitative analytic methods to investigate the state of published work. Though vastly different in the quantity of publications generated, and the field’s stage of development, the theoretical and methodological features of articles published internationally and in South Africa were remarkably alike. Across both contexts, results showed the prominent use of preventionist, traditional and ecological theories, rather than critical or social perspectives. This reveals the pervasive influence of biomedical epistemologies in the field. Authors were primarily located in academia rather than in applied community contexts. They published empirical articles most often, and showed an affinity for positivist research approaches and the survey method of data collection. The use of a critical paradigm and associated methodological choices, such as discourse analysis, was rare. Most studies did not focus specifically on marginalised groups, although the presence of forms of structural marginality by race, gender and socio-economic status were similarly proportionate across local and international research. Results suggest a persistent neglect of researching specific marginalised groups, such as those socially excluded due to age, HIV status, migration and sexual orientation. Differences across contexts were especially evident in the choice of research topics, rather than approaches used. On the whole, international research has a much greater emphasis on research topics related to child, youth and family development. Findings suggest that disciplinary forces in the field heavily influence the form of articles and their theoretical and methodological features, across local and international research. However, journal topics are more context-sensitive aspects of publications, and reflect local concerns. In addition to publication trends, the thesis identifies several discourses present in published work that show how the field is constructed and its ideological tensions. The thesis considers these findings in view of the power relations they represent and critically reflects on the intrinsic and extrinsic issues at stake in defining the field of community psychology in light of global knowledge production imperatives.

The theoretical introduction has four axes: To whom the university serves? Historical Landmarks of the Brazilian Higher Education; ProUni - Wolf in sheep's clothing?; Psychology and Higher Education, and The Process of Consciousness. The method used was qualitative, and data analysis was inspired by historical materialism dialectic, since it is understood that as a consequence of the historical context and the dialectical movement is the issue of transformation of the phenomenon and reality. The techniques for data collection was the virtual ethnography from the group in a social network created by students to bring together scholarship students interested in the topic, because many participants can express themselves virtually with more ease than in a situation socially imposed in the real life, and the field diaries of all spaces on the subject. The plan of analysis consists of results in the resumption of objectives to specify them according to each technique, explain the data obtained, thus, analyzes them. The conclusion of this study is that ProUni although to comply with its objective, is not the best way to access low income students, it does not guarantee the permanence of the student within the IHE, students aware they have a right to public education, free, quality, therefore attempt to organize to change their reality; the students assistance is needed to stay in the HE, this assistance should come as the IHE initiative and not the government, going against the logic of existent public private partnership in higher education; the psychologist work in higher education is important, promoting collective/individual orientations to students and assisting other professionals are designed to guide them; the organization of students can successfully improvements to the student residence, and further studies are needed in the area to discuss the prejudice that ProUni students suffer inside the IHE, like the vast participation of women in the movement.

Apolog?tica, individualismo e marxismo em alguns projetos psi / Psychology to make criticism? Apologetics, individualism and Marxism in psychology

Here is argued that psychology as a particular social complex emerged when bourgeoisie converted the task of understanding human self-activity into a function of justification and naturalization of social order. To defend this thesis the broader historical and philosophical background that gave rise to psychology is highlighted. To analyse the creation of psychology the notion of ideological decadence developed by Luk?cs, was employed. The argument is sustained through the discussion of three groups of psychological projects that developed between 19th and 21st centuries: (a) projects that began with Wundtian psychology and ended with the behaviourist turn in USA; (b) approaches that articulated Marxism and psychology that emerged between Russian revolution in 1917 and Cuban revolution during the second half of 20th century; (c) different traditions of critical psychology that emerged after 1968 and that are developing until 21st century. Considerations on the relationship between psychology, individualism and Marxism are made and, then, in the final remarks, the possibilities of creating a Marxist psychology and of overcoming apologetics are discussed.

Subjekt und Handlungsfähigkeit : ein Versuch der Verknüpfung des Entfremdungsbegriffs mit der Subjektwissenschaft Kritischer Psychologie / Subjekt and agency : an essay on connecting the concept of alienation with critical psychology

Büsse, Sarah Annabell January 2011 (has links)
The paper on hand deals with the question whether it is possible to integrate the concept of Alienation, as outlined by Adorno, Marcuse etc. as one of the key concepts of Critical Theory, into the theoretical framework of Critical Psychologie (Subjektwissenschaft), while especially focussing on the learning theory of Klaus Holzkamp, one of the main representatives of Critical Psychology.

Psychosocial interventions in emergencies : theoretical models and their ethical and political implications in the Venezuelan context : the case of UNICEF

Rodriguez Mora, Isabel January 2004 (has links)
This dissertation presents an analysis of the models of psychosocial processes structuring UNICEF’s psychosocial intervention after the emergency caused by the floods in Venezuela during 1999, and some of their political and ethical implications. I discuss how UNICEF’s intervention in the shelter of Fuerte Tiuna, in Caracas, provides a context in which discourses and practices construct the disaster as an event of a particular type, affording particular positions to those affected by it, and presenting the intervention as a reparative response that engages in different ways with these constructions. Specific issues explored by this dissertation include how practices and discourses construct the disaster and its impact on persons and communities; the nature of the psychosocial intervention; the subject; and the different forms of expertise involved in the intervention. Further, it examines how the intervention-as-designed is implemented and how the actual contact with the beneficiary population generates changes not only in the implementation itself, but also in the conceptual frameworks displayed by UNICEF. The analysis presents UNICEF’s psychosocial intervention as a practice that is simultaneously material and discursive. The participation of experts, the use of specific resources, the deployment of techniques and their devices, the organisation of time and space within the intervention, can all be considered as supporting certain notions of the disaster, its impact and its solution, which organise the models of the psychosocial. The main issues that appear as relevant for the analysis are related to the way in which the intervention constructs the disaster as a psychosocial problem; the appeal to the notion of trauma to explain the impact on those affected; the disciplinary, ethical and political implications of the different forms of understanding suffering in the Venezuelan contemporary context and how the notions put forward by UNICEF’s intervention engage with the social dynamics in Venezuela, in particular with the processes associated with the social and political polarisation.

Cross-examining suggestibility : memory, childhood, expertise

Motzkau, Johanna F. January 2006 (has links)
Initially a central topic for psychology, suggestibility has been forgotten, rediscovered, evaded definition, sabotaged experimentation and persistently triggers epistemological short-circuits when interconnecting psychological questions of memory, childhood and scientificity, with concrete legal issues of child witnesses' credibility, the disclosure of sexual abuse and psychological expertise in courts of law. The aim of this study is to trace suggestibility through history, theory, research and practice, and to explore its efficacy at the intersection of psychology and law, by examining and comparing the. concrete case of child witness practice in England and Germany. Taking a transdisciplinary approach the study draws on two interrelated sources of 'data' combining historical, theoretical and research literature with the analysis of empirical data. A genealogy if theory and research is combined with the results of reflexive interviews, conducted in England and Germany with practitioners from all those professions involved in creating, applying or dealing with knowledge about child witnesses and suggestibility: judges, prosecutors, lawyers, police officers, psychologists (researchers, experts) and social workers. Drawing on the work of G. Deleuze and 1. Stengers this study shows how practical tensions around reliable witnesses, evidence and expertise merge pragmatically with theoretical movements employed to adjust the discipline, thereby causing frictions and voids. In this sense suggestibility provides a liminal resource: It transgresses disciplinary boundaries and pervades pragmatic and theoretical, global and personal, historical and actual considerations, creating voids that allow us to reconsider the pragmatics of change and to redefine the issue of critical impact, as well as to reformulate the problem of child witness practice and children's suggestibility. The study hopes to make a concrete contribution to facilitating the just prosecution of sexual abuse by adding transparency to the complex and at times unhelpfully polarised field of child witness practice. By exploring the 'pragmatics of change' the study furthermore hopes to give an unsettling and productive impetus to theoretical debates within critical approaches to psychology.

For the development of an argumentative structure that defends the thesis it was necessary to map and characterize the students of ProUni from an online questionnaire, besides two in-depth interviews that happened individually. The theoretical structure was divided into three axes that presented: The Conjucture in the System of Higher Education: a brief history; ProUni and Prejudice: "My place is not here?"; and Critical Psychology and its action in Higher Education. It is known that prejudice in society exists, as well as in private Higher Educations Institutions, but it isn?t yet considered how this prejudice influences the student's experience during his/her graduation, therefore, we use the quantitative method and the constructive-interpretative analysis. It is concluded that although the ProUni gives access for the working class to Higher Education, the prejudice experienced during graduation is still quite veiled, damaging the daily life of these students, being a source of psychic suffering. A deep work of psychology in higher education is needed to assist the Higher Educations Institutions in the integration of these students in the university community, as well as to help them cope with prejudice in university experiences.
