Previous issue date: 2016-02-05 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The increased interest in biofuels in recent years, coupled with the problem of the need for environmental sanitation in different areas of the economy justify the proposal of this work, which is the reuse of wastewater from swine (SW) in the jatropha crop (Jatropha curcas L.) and its influence on oil acidity - short parameter importance in the production of biodiesel; culture stands out from oilseeds for its oil production capacity and high adaptability in different scenarios. The experiment featured a Jatropha plantation area of 900 m², which were used 216 m² for conducting the experiment, divided into eighteen installments, the research was conducted over three years; each year the plots received six treatments with different proportions of SW with three repetitions each, applications were performed in triplicate with an interval of three months between each application. Seed harvest was done by hand during the entire production plan period from the first application of each year, the oil was extracted with solvent (ethanol), justified because it is cheaper, less toxic and less harmful to the environment, when compared to other organic solvents such as hexane. The acidity was determined by titration process with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) at the end of each experimental cycle; further the composition was determined as the percentage of oils of fatty acids (FA) by gas chromatography. The results showed an inversely proportional reduction of acidity amount of SW applied during the three years analyzed; It was also observed a decrease in linolenic acid concentration due to the increase of the applied dose and in all cycles.

Eficiência dos ácaros predadores Phytoseiulus fragariae e Neoseiulus californicus (Acari: Phytoseiidae) no controle de Tetranychus evansi e Tetranychus urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae) em Lycopersicon esculentum e Solanum americanum / Efficiency of the predatory mites Phytoseiulus fragariae and Neoseiulus californicus (Acari: Phytoseiidae) in the control of Tetranychus evansi and T. urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae) in Lycopersicon esculentum and Solanum americanumVasconcelos, Geraldo José Nascimento de 19 January 2007 (has links)
Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) is the most important industrialized vegetable crop in the world, and the second horticultural activity in terms of cultivated area and economic importance. The tomato crop is known as an agricultural activity of high risk, due to phytosanitary problems during the entire cycle. Among the mite pests of tomato, Tetranychus evansi Baker and Pritchard is one of the most important in many countries. This mite has been found in the Americas, Africa, Europe and more recently, in Asia. In Africa, this pest causes losses of up to 90% in the tomato production. T. evansi is an unfavourable prey for the most common predatory mites studied until recently. In order to reduce the losses caused by T. evansi in África, a classical biological control program was initiated with the intention of identifying exotic natural enemies of T. evansi in South America that can be potentially introduced into Africa. The searches are being conducted on Solanaceae plants in areas of South America with similar climatic conditions of those where T. evansi is found in Africa. Three predatory mites (Phytoseiidae) were found associated with T. evansi in Uruguaiana-RS, Phytoseiulus longipes Evans, Phytoseiulus fragariae Denmark and Schicha and Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor). Laboratory and field studies with P. longipes presented promising results and demonstrated that this predator is a potential candidate agent against T. evansi. The potential of the two other predatory species against T. evansi is unknown. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of P. fragariae and N. californicus in the biological control of T. evansi and T. urticae in Solanaceae.

The average productivity of maize, common bean and wheat in Brazil is currently considered low, since using more appropriate cultivation techniques, there is possibility of short-term, increase the productivity of these crops. Effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and different phosphorus rates on selected soil and growth parameters of two dry bean cultivarsMoila, Maserole Mavis January 2018 (has links)
Thesis (M.Sc. (Agriculture)) --University of Limpopo, 2018 / Dry bean is one of the most important cash crops and source of protein for small holder farmers. Low yields of dry bean are often reported to be associated with lack of inoculation (Arbuscular mycorrihizal fungi) of seeds prior to planting. Soil phosphorus (P) unavailability is one of the major factors limiting yield of dry bean. Field and Greenhouse experiments were conducted to investigate the response of dry bean cultivars to inoculation and phosphorus application under dry land farming conditions at the Syferkuil experimental farm of University of Limpopo. Both greenhouse and field experiments were carried out as a split-split plot arrangement in randomised complete block design with four replications. Main plot treatment comprised of two dry bean cultivars VIZ, red speckled bean and small white haricot. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi inoculation levels (inoculated and uninoculated) were assigned in the sub-plot whilst the sub-sub plot was applied with five phosphorus rates at 0, 20; 40; 60 and 80 kg/ ha using single superphosphate (10.5 % P). The data collected were subjected to analysis of variance using statistical software (ANOVA) STATISTIX 10.0.Dry bean cultivars (red speckled bean and small white haricot bean) were evaluated in a field experiment for their growth, nodulation and yield responses to AM fungi inoculation and different rates of P fertiliser. The results revealed that the red speckled bean had higher number of nodules (45 %), stem diameter 26.96 cm and higher leaf area of 21.05 cm2 as compared to small white haricot bean. The application of P at the rate of 40 kg/ha produced higher grain yield of 743.47 kg/ha as compared to small white haricot bean with 572 kg/ha. The growth parameters such as yield, soil chemical and biological properties did not significantly respond to inoculation (P≤0.05). Red speckled bean and small white haricot bean were evaluated in greenhouse experiment for their growth and nodulation on inoculation and phosphorus fertilizer treatment In the greenhouse experiment phosphorus fertilizer rate showed significant effect on chlorophyll content, leaf fresh and dry weight. The dry bean cultivars were found to be significant to number of nodules, plant vigour and root dry weight. The red speckled bean showed higher growth parameters as compared to small white haricot bean. The application of Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AM fungi) at varying rates did not have any significant influence on all parameters measured in the experiment on both trials. The study needs to be repeated after 4 to 5 years. The findings of this study concluded that P should be applied at the rate of 40 kg P/ha in order to improve the production of dry bean. / NRF (National Research Foundation)

The effect of climate change on the farming business in Nwanedi Irrigation Scheme in Musina Local Municipality, Limpopo ProvinceMarubini, Fulufhelo January 2018 (has links)
Thesis(MBA.) -- University of Limpopo, 2018 / Nwanedi Irrigation Scheme (NIS) is situated at the far north of Limpopo. It is comprised of both livestock and crop farmers. Currently, the total number of farmers in the scheme is 160. Noteworthy is that the majority of farmers grow and harvest crops. The dominant crop produced in the area is jam tomato with a few of people who cultivate table tomato and other vegetables such as cabbage and eggplant (Mashala, 2013). The irrigation scheme covered an area of about 2000 hectares land, which belongs to the state and part of it belongs to the Communal Property Association (CPA). Moreover, agriculture is considered as one of the most sensitive to weather and climate variables, which include temperature, precipitation, light and weather extremes such as droughts, floods and severe storms. The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact brought about by climate change on farming business. Moreover, to evaluate the problems that were associated with climate change that affected farming, crop production and eventually the profit generation at NIS. Considering greenhouse gas emissions, it is believed that they are one of the causes of the change in global climate. Again, most food production means rely on inputs to some or all tillage, seeds, fertilisers, irrigation, feed for animals, pest and disease control. Henceforth, the study has collected primary data. The study employed both qualitative and quantitative paradigms. The 160 crop farmers, as a sample size of 32 (20% of the population) respondents, were randomly selected and interviewed. The study found out that drought was real and had been experienced in NIS. Meanwhile, in crop farming, water is more important just as a growth media such as fertilised soil. Without water, no farming activity could take place. The drought experienced had led farmers not to plant anything on their farms, which meant that no income was generated in the entire drought period. Furthermore, most of the farmers in the area had no alternative means of acquiring water to irrigate their crops. Few farmers who managed to plant had used a very small scale than usual because there was not enough water. Drought affected job loss in the farming business where many employees had to be ceased from coming to work. The study also found that NIS had experienced high temperature, which were never experienced before. Musina is best known for its excessive heat, but the recent heat wave that has been experienced in the area of the study was extreme to a point that crop farming was very difficult because the little moisture in the soil had quickly depleted. Crops could no longer absorb it as it dried up rapidly. Usually, when it is extremely hot, the condition favours pests and diseases. Later, it was found that a new pest referred to as Eelworm (Tuta Tundra), which was not found in the area before had been discovered. Consequently, the introduction of the new pests in the area was a challenge because farmers did not know which insecticides to apply in order to control the manifestation and prevent the damage it caused on the crops, tomato in particular. Eelworm has affected the tomato crop as it damaged the leaves of their plants. That had negatively affected the fruit production. Most farmers who have experienced Eelworm in their tomato fields, had their fruits severely attacked to be unusable.

The effectiveness of two chelated zinc compounds in correcting zinc deficiencies was studied. Soil and foliar treatments were made to study possible residual zinc carry-over from one season to the next. Foliar treatments at various rates were applied to raise plant tissue zinc levels above deficiency levels. It was found that none of the treatments studied resulted in any substantial carry-over of zinc to the following year. All of the foliar zinc treatments resulted in an increase in leaf zinc content in all of the varieties of fruit studied. The level of zinc in the treated trees increased in proportion to the amount of actual zinc applied. All zinc treated trees remained above critical zinc deficiency levels during the season treated as opposed to the untreated trees.
