Orphaned DNS Records

Detta dokument är en teknisk rapport för ett projekt vars syfte är att utveckla en Lambda-funktion som letar efter oanvänd Domain Name System (DNS)-information i AWS’ Route 53. Denna information har potential att orsaka säkerhetsbrister genom att missleda användare till en destination annan än den som de förväntar sig nå. Någon med skadliga avsikter skulle därför kunna använda sig av denna brist för att rikta data till sig själv som denne inte egentligen bör ha tillgång till. Problemet förvärras hos molntjänster som erbjuder uthyrning av IP-adresser då dessa ofta kommer från en adressrymd som tjänsten underhåller. När en användare sedan slutar hyra adressen hamnar den återigen i adressrymden. Om det råkar finnas DNS-information kopplad till den adressen så kommer de nu orsaka den tidigare nämnda säkerhetsbristen då de hänvisar till en IP-adress som vem som helst kan ha hyrt. För att åtgärda detta skrevs en funktion i Python 3.9.4 som sedan integreras i AWS Lambda. Funktionen körs från ett baskonto i AWS och hämtar data både från detta konto och andra konton genom att anta en specifik IAM-roll inom dem. Där hämtar den både kontots DNS-information samt IP-adresser som den sedan jämför för att se om de stämmer överens eller ej. Om de gör det så är informationen inte oanvänd och därför ointressant för funktionen. All DNS-information som inte har en matchande IP-adress läggs då till i en lista som sedan skickas ut till behöriga genom SNS i AWS. / This document is a technical report on the development of a Lambda function, the purpose of which is to look for orphaned (dangling) Domain Name System (DNS) records in AWS’ Route 53. These records can open up serious vulnerabilities as they have the potential to misdirect clients to end-points other than the one they think they are accessing; something which can be the cause of malicious intent.  This is particularly an issue in cloud platforms that offer the ability to lease IPs from their own pool of addresses, as said addresses go back into the pool once they are released by the lessee. These addresses are then able to be leased by anyone with access to AWS and could, as such, lease addresses until they happen upon one that has a corresponding orphaned record somewhere and redirect sensitive data to themselves. The resulting function is written in Python 3.9.4 and integrated into AWS via Lambda. It functions by assuming roles in specified accounts in order to fetch DNS records and Elastic IPs from these accounts, which it then tries to match in order to determine whether or not they are orphaned. Any orphaned records found are then compiled into a list containing the account ID and URL of each record which is then sent out to the appropriate parties through AWS SNS.

Existential consciousness, redemption, and Buddhist allusions in the work of Saul Bellow

Within the past two centuries, massive industrialization, technological and scientific advances, wars, diseases, failures in social systems, and religious, ethnic, and political conflicts have produced an existential angst that has saturated the collective consciousness of modern man. The atrocities of World Wars I and II induced European and American authors and artists to confront this state of disillusionment, anxiety, loneliness, fear, and dread; consequently, much of our modern literature reflects this nihilistic darkness. In this state of grave doubts and uncertainties, the modern man finds himself alienated and disconnected from the very essences that ground him. Scholars of literature, philosophy, and the various arts and social sciences, having examined this contemporary dilemma, find just cause to question our western belief that science, technology, and materialism put the world in order. The further indictment is that these rational and materialistic forces have usurped the place of God and dismantled the ancient mythologies that once grounded our existence. This study examines the selected work of Saul Bellow and argues that his recurring themes of suffering, compassion, humanity, and renewal of the human spirit are antithetical to this collective existential angst. My argument introduces the doctrine of Existentialism and then explores the basic existentialist theory of Jean-Paul Sartre. From this platform, I later establish that Bellow takes a stand against this collective nihilism in favor of community and the celebration of life that are defined by a moral framework. Bellow's most representative novel in this vein of existential dislocation is Dangling Man. / From this novel, I argue that there is an inherent flaw in the notion that man's essential existence can only be defined through his agency as an individual, and that man, not God, is ultimately responsible for his actions and destiny. This pursuit of existence based on personal freedom and intellectual synthesis is prone to failure; Bellow's point of view is that the existentialist, having disconnected himself from God and community, plunges into an abyss fraught with angst and turmoil. Bellow's theme of humanity instructs that our redemption lies not in our personal quest, but in our absorption and participation in a community framed by moral precepts and the respect for God. Finally, and from another angle and through Bellow's Herzog, I establish a connection to Buddhism. Studies on Nucleic Acids – Structure and Dynamics

<p>This thesis is based on six papers, Papers I-VI, focusing on the interplay between the stabilizing elements of nucleic acids self-assembly; hydrogen bonding, stacking and solvent effects. In Paper I we investigate how the substitution of the O4' for CH<sub>2</sub> in the sugar moiety of adenosine (2'-deoxyaristeromycin) at the A<sup>6</sup> position of the Dickerson-Drew dodecamer makes the two modified bases exist in a dynamic equilibrium between Hoogsteen and Watson-Crick base pairing in the NMR time scale. Paper II is a structural study of the incorporation of 1-(1',3'-<i>O</i>-anhydro-<i>β</i>-D-psicofuranosyl)thymine in the T<sup>7</sup> position of the Dickerson-Drew dodecamer. NMR constrained molecular dynamics and hydration studies show the base-base distortions caused by the introduction of a North-type locked sugar in an otherwise B-type DNA•DNA duplex. Paper III shows that the stacking distortion caused by the 1-(1',3'-<i>O</i>-anhydro-<i>β</i>-D-psicofuranosyl)thymine building block perturbs the charge transfer similar to a DNA mismatch. Paper IV highlights how the sequence context affects the physico-chemical properties, monitored by the p<i>K</i><i>a</i> of guanine itself as well as how the charge perturbation is experienced by the neighboring bases, in ssDNA and ssRNA. Paper V focuses on the differences between the structural equilibria of single-stranded ssDNA and ssRNA. Directional differences in single-stranded stacking between ssDNA and ssRNA are identified and provide a basis to explain directional differences in p<i>K</i><i>a</i> modulation and dangling-end stabilization. In Paper VI the thermodynamic gains of dangling ends on DNA and RNA core duplexes are found to correlate with the X-ray geometries of dangling nucleobases relative to the hydrogen bonds of the closing base pairs.</p>

Preventing neuromuscular deconditioning in critically ill patients

Critically ill patients can be prescribed bed rest as a therapeutic intervention. Immobility from bed rest can cause neuromuscular deconditioning and weakness. Preventing immobility by implementing mobilization activities may prevent these complications from occurring. Currently, mobility protocols are lacking. The purpose of this literature review is to analyze the evidence related to mobilizing patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). In the future, a standard mobility protocol should be instituted for critically ill patients indicating when and how to begin mobilization. The efficacy of mobility protocols relies on an interdisciplinary team for positive outcomes to prevent complications of inactivity and promote patient safety. Future implementation of mobilization can decrease patients' lengths of stay and extensive rehabilitation from inactivity. Nursing education, practice and research should focus on interventions to prevent complications of immobility by identifying mobilization techniques, safety approaches and the use of protocols.

A Novel Framework For Detecting Subdomain State Against Takeover Attacks

The Domain Name System (DNS) oversees the internet's architecture, providing pointers to both internal and external services. Consequently, enterprises increase their attack surface while simultaneously increasing their exposure to potential cyber threats. Subdomain takeovers happen when a subdomain leads to a website that no longer exists. As a result, the subdomain will be in control of an attacker. A compromised subdomain may be the access point to many attacks like information threats, phishing attacks, infrastructure intrusion and many more. Subdomain takeover attacks are one of the overlooked attack surfaces related to cyber security. This thesis aims to investigate the subdomain takeover attacks, how the attacks happen, the attack methodology by an attacker and drawbacks in the current strategies and tools, which are countermeasures for subdomain takeover attacks. The research focuses on resolving an intrusion from happening within the perspective of an enterprise standpoint. A new custom framework which resolves the subdomain takeover attacks was developed. A comparative study of the newly developed framework and the existing open-source tools and their response to an attack scenario too is made. Also, a comparison of the leading cloud platforms was conducted and their existing security features and mitigation measures for similar attacks and threats.

Há uma corrida para o desenvolvimento de dispositivos cada vez menores assim como para alcançar o controle e manipulação de dispositivos na escala nanométrica. Isto requer estudos sistemáticos de propriedades físicas em sistemas de tamanhos reduzidos. O foco deste trabalho é o estudo de Ressonância de Spin Eletrônico (ESR) em sistemas de dimensões reduzidas. Os materiais escolhidos para esse estudo foram filmes finos de GaAs, GaN dopados com Mn (GaMnAs e GaMnN), filmes finos amorfos de silício dopados com terras-raras a-Si:RE (RE = Y, Gd, Er e Lu) e nanopartículas (NPs) dopadas com impurezas magnéticas de terras-raras e metal de transição em matrizes metálicas Ag:R (R = Er, Yb e Mn) e em isolantes NaYF4:Gd. A finalidade desse estudo é explorar as propriedades magnéticas microscópicas destes sistemas. Os resultados das medidas em filmes de GaMnAs e GaMnN indicaram ausência de ferromagnetismo de longo alcance. Os experimentos de ESR mostraram ausência da relação entre largura de linha (?H) de ESR e a concentração de íons de Mn2+, mas foi observado que ?H aumenta conforme o nível de cristalinidade das amostras aumenta. Além disso, há um aumento de ?H em baixas temperaturas para os filmes com maior nível de cristalinidade, sugerindo uma correlação magnética de curto alcance entre os íons magnéticos se estabelecendo nessas amostras. Resultados similares foram encontrados para os filmes de GaMnN, exceto na medida de magnetização em função do campo magnético para GaMnN, a qual podemos observar ¿loops¿ ferromagnéticos abaixo de T ? 50 K ao contrário dos filmes de GaMnAs que não observamos nenhum ¿loop¿ ferromagnético em T = 2 K. Para outro grupo de filmes de a-Si:RE, foi estudado o efeito de redução na densidade de estados ligações pendentes (D0) nos filmes Si dopados com diferentes espécies de terras-raras (RE¿s) em função das diferentes concentrações. De acordo com nossos resultados, a dopagem com RE reduz a intensidade do sinal de ESR dos estados D0 com uma dependência exponencial das concentrações de RE¿s. As NPs de Ag:R e de NaYF4:Gd foram preparadas pelo método químico. Nós observamos uma forma de linha de ESR tipicamente Lorentziana consistente com os estados fundamentais dos íons de Er3+, Yb3+ e Mn2+ em simetria cúbica. O fator g encontrado para esses íons nas NPs é muito próximo ao observado em sistemas isolantes cúbicos, ao contrário do encontrado em metais, onde é observado um deslocamento de g. Além disso, não foi possível observar a relaxação Korringa para as linhas de ESR de Er3+, Yb3+ e Mn2+ no sistema de NPs que é observada, tipicamente, em metais. Logo, esses resultados nos levam a acreditar que a interação de troca (Jfs) entre os momentos localizados dos íons magnéticos (ML) e os elétrons de condução (c-e) está ausente no sistema de NPs de Ag:R, indicando que a natureza desta interação deveria ser reexaminada na escala nanométrica. Para as NPs de NaYF4:Gd, o controle do tamanho da partícula foi adquirido segundo a quantidade de rps = precursor/surfactantes. Não foi observada nenhuma evidência de cluster de Gd e observamos o espectro de ESR com as mesmas características já observadas no sistema bulk : três linhas de ressonância, sendo essas linhas com origens bem controvérsias, das quais não sabemos se é de origem de um campo cristalino de combinações de simetria cúbica com tetragonal ou mesmo rômbica ou mesmo de sítios de Gd3+ com simetrias mais baixas / Abstract: Reduced dimensions systems present many potencial technological applications. There is great interest in the development of small scale devices as well as in the control and manipulation at the nanoscale and in study of finite size on physical properties. The main goal of this work is the study of Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) in systems of reduced dimensions. The materials chosen for this study were thin films of GaAs, GaN doped with Mn (GaMnAs and GaMnN), amorphous silicon thin films doped with rare-earth a-Si:RE (RE = Y, Gd, Er and Lu) and nanoparticles (NPs) doped with magnetic impurities such as of rare earth and transition metal doped Ag:R (R = Er, Yb and Mn) and insulating NaYF4:Gd. The purpose of this study is to explore the microscopic magnetic properties of these systems. The results of the measurements in GaMnAs and GaMnN films indicated absence of long range ferromagnetism. the ESR results reveal no relationship between ESR linewidth (?H) and the Mn2+ concentration in this films. Instead, a broadening of the ESR ?H was found as a function of the increasing in the crystallinity level of the films. Furthermore, for the films with higher level of crystallinity, a significant broadening of the ESR ?H is observed as the temperature is decreased, suggesting the development of short-range magnetic correlations between the Mn2+ ions. Similar results were found for films GaMnN, except in the magnetization versus magnetic field experiments for GaMnN, which we could observe ferromagnetic loops in T < 50 K, in constract of GaMnAs films where no ferromagnetic loop in T = 2 K was found for all measured films. For the other group of films, a-Si, we studied the suppresion effects in the density of dangling bonds species D0 states as function concentration for different Rare-Earth (RE¿s) species. According to our data, the RE-doping reduces the ESR signal intensity of the D0 states with an exponential dependence on the Re¿s concentrations. Ag:R and NaYF4:Gd NPs were prepared by chemical method. We observed a typical Lorentzian line-shape ESR lines for all studied dopants (R = Er, Yb e Mn). The gfactor found for Er3+, Yb3+ e Mn2+ in the nanoparticles is very close to g-value found in ground-states of these ions in insulating cubic systems, in contrast that what was found in metals, where it is observed a g-shift for the metallic system. Furthermore, it was not possible to observe the Korringa relaxation for the ESR lines of Er3+, Yb3+ e Mn2+ in the NPs system typically observed in metals. Therefore, the results suggest that the exchange interaction (Jfs) between localized magnetic moments (ML) and conduction electrons (c-e) is absent in Ag:R NPs, indicating that the nature of this interaction needs to be reexamined at the nanoscale range. For NaYF4:Gd NPs, the particle control size was obtained by the amount of rps = precursor/surfactant. There was no evidence of Gd clusters in our results and we found the same characteristics observed in the bulk system: three resonance lines, with the controversies origins.
