Development of methodology to correct sampling error associated with FRM PM10 samplers

Chen, Jing 15 May 2009 (has links)
Currently, a lack of accurate emission data exits for particulate matter (PM) in agricultural air quality studies (USDA-AAQTF, 2000). PM samplers, however, tend to over estimate the concentration of most agricultural dusts because of the interaction of the particle size distribution (PSD) and performance characteristics of the sampler (Buser, 2004). This research attempts to find a practical method to characterize and correct this error for the Federal Reference Method (FRM) PM10 sampler. First, a new dust wind tunnel testing facility that satisfies the USEPA’s requirement of testing PM10 samplers was designed, built, and evaluated. Second, the wind tunnel testing protocol using poly-dispersed aerosol as the test dust was proved to be able to provide results consistent with mono-dispersed dusts. Third, this study quantified the variation of over sampling ratios for the various cut point and slopes of FRM PM10 samplers and proposed an averaged over sampling ratio as a correction factor for various ranges of PSD. Finally, a method of using total suspended particle (TSP) samplers as a field reference for determining PM10 concentrations and aerosol PSD was explored computationally. Overall, this dissertation developed successfully the methodology to correct the sampling error associated with the FRM PM10 sampler: (1) wind tunnel testing facilities and protocol for experimental evaluation of samplers; (2) the variation of the oversampling ratios of FRM PM10 samplers for computational evaluation of samplers; (3) the evaluation of TSP sampler effectiveness as a potential field reference for field evaluation of samplers.

Understanding and development of high shear technology for liquid metal processing

Dybalska, Agnieszka January 2016 (has links)
Oxide films in aluminium melts are unavoidable. A new technology developed by BCAST suggests breaking films into small fragments or particles which play a role as the grain refiner. Mechanical breakage is realised by using a high-shear mixer (HSM) with the rotor-stator impeller. In the presented thesis, the positive role of small oxide particles is shown by the computer modelling. The defragmentation potency of HSM is demonstrated by physical modelling with powders checked by optical analyses (microscopy) and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy). The flow has been analysed by optical recording and by PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) to find the best conditions to cause a satisfying oxides distribution in all volume of liquid metal processed by the HSM. A new model to estimate the mixed volume has been proposed and checked by experiments with liquid metals. The model was checked by the PIV observations and by direct experiments in the liquid metal and is found to be in good agreement with reality. Optimisation methods are considered and a new design of HSM is proposed according to the experimental findings. This design improves the uniformity of mixing in the pseudo-cavern volume and exhibits the dispersion efficiency better than the design used currently by BCAST. Understanding and development of high shear technology for liquid metals processing is an important part of BCAST research and is of great interest for industry. Up to now, this method was found to give good experimental results but it was a lack of information about physical basics behind this process. The goal of this thesis is to answer why and how to apply HSM in metallurgy and to propose new condition and design solutions associated with the specific requirements of the liquid metal process.

Study on the dispersion of titanium dioxide pigment particles in water.

Abrahão, Ricardo Tadeu 13 December 2012 (has links)
Pigmentary titanium dioxide (TiO2) is the most important white pigment used in several industries, including those that manufacture plastic, coatings and paper. To achieve maximum efficiency in light scattering and to deliver the required opacity to the medium in which the TiO2 is present, the TiO2 particles must be fully dispersed throughout this medium. The particle dispersion in a cured, dry, or solid medium depends on the dispersion efficiency in the wet state, which depends on the effectiveness of the deagglomeration process. Based on the existing technical knowledge, the objective of this study is to investigate fundamental aspects in the dispersion process and to understand the effect of these processes on the required energy to deagglomerate pigmentary TiO2 particles in water. The fundamental aspects of particle wetting, dispersion and stability are reviewed as well as the theories of the tensile strength of agglomerates, particle roughness and liquid surface tension and viscosity. Although liquid surface tension and viscosity are the main factors that influence deagglomeration, some particle-related properties (particle radius, particle shape factor, agglomerate pore volume and specific surface area) play an important role in wetting behavior. The maximum mass of water adsorbed by the agglomerates is proportional to the liquid surface tension. The liquid adsorption rate is a function of the ratio between the liquid and solid surface tensions as well as the shape factor. In the present study, for any shape factor value, the lower the liquid surface energy is in relation to the solid surface tension, the larger the water adsorption rate. After characterizing the particles, the agglomerates and the liquid medium, and obtaining correlations between all properties and the energy to achieve maximum dispersion, a predictive model is proposed to describe the influence of liquid surface tension and the particle roughness on the energy required to produce liquid dispersions with minimum particle size. This model applies to different particles with similar surfaces and to particles with different surfaces but similar sizes.

Dispersionsoptimierung von Kohlenstoffnanoröhren für die Herstellung von Polymer-Komposit-Drucksensoren / Optimization of carbon nanotubes dispersions for polymer composite-based pressure sensors

Gerlach, Carina 27 November 2017 (has links) (PDF)
Carbon nanotubes (CNT) polymer composites in the field of sensory applications have considerable potential. However, their electrical properties and their changes under mechanical stress play a decisive role. The deagglomeration process of the CNTs also has a great influence on the aspect ratio of the CNT agglomerates as well as the CNTs themselves and thus the electrical conductivity and reproducibility of the composite in both the mechanically unloaded and loaded state. This is shown by means of (partially) analytical models. The dispersion quality is influenced by many factors. The process parameters during ultrasound dispersion are currently being determined by a trial-and-error method. Within the scope of the work, a dispersing equation for cylindrical particles, which are approximate to CNTs, was first developed, applied and verified for the dispersion of CNTs in solvents. The validity of the equation for CNTs was shown by the variation of the ultrasonic parameters time as well as energy and their influence on the degree of dispersion. The absorbance measured by means of UV-VIS spectroscopy serves as an indirect measure of the degree of dispersion. After pre-testing for suitable material selection, all relevant influencing parameters were calculated or determined experimentally. Experimental verification was carried out on CNT-N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone dispersions, which were dispersed in a controlled manner by means of an ultrasonic sonotrode. As a result, it is illustrated that the determination of the optimal ultrasonic parameters is possible and can replace the conventional practice of the experimental determination of the dispersing parameters for CNTs. Accordingly, the basis for the production of electrically reproducible CNT polymer composite-based sensors has been established. In addition, the application potential of this sensor concept ranging from individual sensors for selective pressure measurement over pressure distribution measurement as a sensor matrix to the application as a shoe insole for pressure monitoring was shown.
