The phenomenolgoical experience of posttraumatic growth in the context of a traumatic bereavementAcheson, Kerry 15 July 2013 (has links)
The present study involves an exploration of the phenomenological expenence of posttraumatic growth in the context of a traumatic bereavement. An idiographic case study of a student who had witnessed her mother's death twelve years previously was conducted. Semi-structured interviews elicited data which was analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IP A). Posttraumatic growth was found to have developed with regards to self-perception, relationships, and also in a broader spiritual and existential domain. The findings of this study shed light on the extant posttraumatic growth literature. In particular, findings were discussed in relation to the posttraumatic growth model as proposed by Calhoun and Tedeschi (2006). As posttraumatic growth is a relatively young concept, further research is needed in order to understand the meaning of reported growth more fully. While posttraumatic growth has been investigated in the context of bereavement, future research should distinguish more clearly between growth following traumatic and non-traumatic bereavement. Posttraumatic growth has received minimal empirical attention in South Africa, and therefore exploration of this area is suggested in the future. / KMBT_363 / Adobe Acrobat 9.54 Paper Capture Plug-in

Submitted by Ana Guimarães Pereira (agpereir@ucs.br) on 2014-09-26T14:17:59Z

In this sense, we highlight the importance of the preparation of the healthcare professional to experience situations involving controversial issues such as euthanasia. It is believed that these professionals also support their choices and actions in knowledge that goes beyond the Techno-scientific field, since the interdisciplinary approach provides an increasingly qualified care. The combination of different fields, such as health with philosophical knowledge, offers the possibility to reflect more deeply on topics that were previously covered only in the technoscientific field. This way, the objetive of this work is to analyze voluntary euthanasia from the perspective and principles of utilitarian ethics, in order to provide the healthcare professionals with an approach that goes beyond the technoscientific field. It is a literature research of descriptive-analytical character. It clarifies relevant concepts such as euthanasia and human freedom and autonomy, always analyzing these concepts from an utilitarian perspective. The present work has the purpose of contributing to the improvement of healthcare professionals through an interdisciplinary approach, since it is believed that the more qualified a professional is, the better the care provided by the same will be, especially if the patient is going through the dying process.

Primary school children's experiences in their loss of a parentHildebrand, Paula January 2005 (has links)
This study aims to discover the meaning that primary school children place on the loss of a parent and the impact it has on the children’s lives. As it is an emotive topic, and because of the difficulties of interviewing children, qualitative techniques of research data collection are considered the most appropriate. The study will explore, discover and describe children’s personal experiences of loss in a phenomenological and contextual manner. The sample in the study will be selected according to non-probability and purposive sampling techniques. Because children are being interviewed, the researcher will ethically approach gatekeepers for permission, and gain their informed consent. Data will be collected using semi-structured interviews, in which the researcher will interact with the interviewees in a natural setting. Data analysis will be done according to Tesch’s eight steps for analysing qualitative research data (Creswell, 1994:155). Once this process has been completed, the data will be verified against the four criteria that Guba (in Krefting, 1991:214-222) developed for testing the trustworthiness of qualitative research findings. The results of the study, as well as conclusions and recommendations drawn from the data, will be disseminated by means of a written report.

Dwellers of memory : an ethnography of place, memory and violence in Medellín, ColombiaRiaño Alcalá, Pilar 11 1900 (has links)
This dissertation documents the memories of Medellin's city dwellers and
explores how people in violent urban contexts make sense of violence and deal with its
presence in their lives. This study is defined as an anthropology of remembering; it is an
ethnographic observation of the practices of remembering and forgetting and how these
practices shape and are shaped by the lived experience of violence. The dissertation is
built on extensive fieldwork in the Colombian city of Medellin with a cross section of
women, youth and community leaders.
The thesis argues that when the uncertainty and paradox created by widespread
forms of violence threaten to destroy the social and material worlds of Colombian city
dwellers, memory becomes a strategic tool for human and cultural survival. The creation
of an oral history of death and the dead, the presence of a local social knowledge that
assists city dwellers in their safe circulation in and through the city, and the maintenance
of practices of place making are examples of how city dwellers deal with the devastating
effects of violence in their lives. The thesis develops a place-based exploration of
memory and violence and approaches place as a physical, sensory, social and imaginative
experience that maintains a sense of continuity between the past and the every day life of
Medellin's city dwellers. The two connecting concepts that ground the analysis of the
relationship between people, memory and violence are those of "sense of place" and
"communities of memory."
The dimensions of human agency, cultural survival and human suffering are
central to the exploration of memory, place and violence developed in this thesis. From
this perspective, the thesis takes to task anthropological works on violence that
emphasize the routinization of terror and fear for those who live amidst widespread
violence. The thesis discusses the multiple ways in which memory is disputed in
Colombia and the risks posed by a local reading of violence as intrinsic to the history of
the country. It concludes that when individuals are faced with realities such as life and
death, the familiar faces of the actors of violence and the weakening of the social and
ethical fabric of their communities, they do not stand in definite positions and cannot be
defined in simple terms such as victims and perpetrators. Thus, it can be recognized that
although violence plays a central role in the Medellin city dwellers processes of identity
formation, it does not exhaust these possibilities. / Arts, Faculty of / Anthropology, Department of / Graduate

Does Postformal Thinking Facilitate Recovery From Grief and Promote Well-Being During Bereavement In Widows?Sanders, Sharon Lee 01 September 2001 (has links)
Widows were assessed on four measures relating to recovery from bereavement: postformal thinking (measured as dialectical thinking), recovery from grief (measured as past feelings and present feelings), well-being (measured by three subscales: autonomy, environmental mastery, and positive relations with others), and age at time of participation. Eighty participants completed and returned questionnaires. It was hypothesized that age of the participant and the development of postformal thinking would predict higher scores on recovery from grief and well-being. Analysis was performed using a Structural Equation Model with a comparative fit index (CFI) of .98. Results showed that age and postformal thinking did not predict recovery from grief or higher well-being scores. In addition no correlation was found between later age and postformal thinking, although there was a correlation between scores on recovery from grief and scores on well-being.

Dealing with Death: Medical Students' Experiences with Patient LossPessagno, Regina M. 13 October 2010 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Current research on medical students' death experiences is either outdated or produces conflicting results. This research aims to address these issues by analyzing in-depth interviews in order to explore how medical students view and cope view death. The sample consists of twenty third and fourth year students attending a large Midwestern medical school. Grounded theory analyses techniques of line-by-line coding were used to analysis the interviews. The study revealed that students predominantly cope with patient death by talking and that contrary to much of the findings of previous research concerning medical socialization and physicians, students do not always view death as a failure. Beyond the students' death experiences, the study also captured students' perceptions and reactions towards various socialization stages in their medical careers, such as gross anatomy lab. Student beliefs as to what constitutes a good and bad death are also explored as well as their attitudes towards physician assisted suicide. Although these findings are not generalizable to any medical student population, they do provide important qualitative information as to how medical students experience and cope with death.

Snowing in KansasCourtney, Mackenzie 28 April 2011 (has links)
Set in rural Kansas, this story follows the lives of Jonathan Tate, his sister Lily Anne Tate, and their father, up until his death, Hershall Tate. They are an isolated family, seemingly living outside of time. John opens the novel with a walk into town to set the contrast between him and the rest of the world. Time is the theme and essence, because every scene and the tone of the scenes are weighted by the imminence of Hershall's death. He is dying slowly and so their lives move slowly. Lily can't help but be ornery, while John, assuming all the chores and anxiety of the future without his father, is reserved and reluctant. Hershall is set in his ways and not in a hurry to get the house in order before his death. There is the old-fashioned nature of Hershall, the isolated nature of the whole family, and the rest of the modern world to contend with. These beginning pages are setting up the next stage of the novel where Lily and John begin their journey after their father's death.

Establishing help-seeking pathways bereaved through perinatal death in Dr George Mukhari Hospital, Gauteng ProvinceMoloisane-Ledwaba, Johanna Mmasetla January 2022 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D. (Psychology)) -- University of Limpopo, 2022 / The psychological impact of perinatal death in the form of bereavement has been widely researched especially from the western perspective. The aim of this study was to establish the help-seeking pathways by mothers bereaved through perinatal death from the African perspective.
The qualitative research paradigm in particular the phenomenological approach was adopted for the study. Phenomenology is described as an approach that focuses on the study of the lived experiences of individuals within their world. The application of this approach included personal interviews of 20 mothers who have experienced perinatal death at Doctor George Mukhari hospital in Gauteng province. The aim was to establish the help-seeking pathways they adopted to relief their distress, in terms of how they managed their bereavement and the help that they sought to relief their emotional distress.
The findings of the study indicated that mothers lacked knowledge about what precipitated the onset of sudden symptoms such as early rupture of membrane, bleeding, lack of foetal movement which finally led to perinatal death. This lack of knowledge led mothers to attribute the cause of perinatal death to various reasons and conclusions such as distance decay, bad roads that delayed their arrival timeously at the hospital for their babies to be saved. Some cited lack of sense of urgency from the medical personnel and shortage of staff, especially doctors. However, they perceived positive social support from their families, spouses and medical professionals as one of the factors that contributed to their level of calmness and ability to bear the pain of loss.
However, participants sought alternative help to facilitate clear understanding about what could have caused their babies to die, also how to manage their grief and how to deal with their subsequent pregnancies. Most of the participants benefited from the various healing pathways they chose. There is a need for healthcare system and community support to be more responsive to the plight of bereaved mothers, in reducing the stigma and the self-blame by bereaved mothers by offering support through counseling center. The findings reaffirm that despite the great studies taken in reducing perinatal deaths, there is a need for collaboration between the modern healthcare system and the traditional healthcare practitioners. Furthermore, emphasis
v
is needed on the preventative measures and training of healthcare practitioners within the maternal and child healthcare system to further reduce the alarming increase of prenatal deaths
