Wideband Multipath Propagation for Helicopter-to-Ground Telemetry Links

Rice, Michael, Jensen, Michael 10 1900 (has links)
ITC/USA 2011 Conference Proceedings / The Forty-Seventh Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 24-27, 2011 / Bally's Las Vegas, Las Vegas, Nevada / This paper reports the analysis of L-band channel sounding experiments conducted along the flight line at Cairns Army Airfield, Ft. Rucker, Alabama. Propagation data from multiple antennas on a helicopter to multiple receiving antennas on the ground are used to compute power delay profiles. Analysis of the results reveals delay spreads of the multipath channels between 200 ns and 400 ns, with the longer delay spreads resulting when using a receive antenna with lower gain and higher sidelobe levels. The data also shows that on average, diversity signaling from three aircraft-mounted antennas can lead to gains in signal-to-noise ratio of approximately 13 dB, with the gain dependent on the multipath characteristics observed by the ground antenna.

Ultrawideband Channel Sounding Studies in Outdoor and Outdoor-Indoor Environments

Noronha, Joseph Ajay Neil 21 July 2004 (has links)
Ultrawideband (UWB) is one of the most promising communication technologies in recent times with the promise of high data rates and spectral reuse. This work analyses the outdoor and outdoor-to-indoor propagating characteristics of the UWB pulse, which can be of the order of a few gigahertz in bandwidth. The aim of the thesis is to provide the parameters needed in order to develop a channel model for such cases. The channel model would then play an important role in determining physical layer (PHY) solutions to optimally exploit these characteristics. The measurements carried out on the Virginia Tech campus are used to compute parameters such as path loss, penetration loss and delay statistics. These are carried out in multiple frequency bands and the results are compared across frequency bands to determine effect of different frequency levels on the parameters. Finally the results are analyzed with respect to similar parameters obtained in other measurement campaigns in an attempt to evaluate the performance of Ultrawideband vis-à-vis narrowband systems. / Master of Science

Channel Impulse Response and Its Relationship to Bit Error Rate at 28 GHz

Miniuk, Mary 10 February 2004 (has links)
Over the years, the Internet has become increasingly popular and people's dependence on it has increased dramatically. Whether it be to communicate to someone across the world, find blueprints, or check sports scores, the Internet has become a necessary resource for everyone. In emergency situations, this need increases further. After the terrorist attacks on the Pentagon, it took several days to restore communications. This is not an acceptable time frame when people's lives are at stake. Virginia Tech's Center for Wireless Telecommunication has developed a prototype of a rapidly deployable high bandwidth wireless communication system at 28 GHz (Local Multipoint Distribution Service frequency). This system provides a large bandwidth radio link to a disaster zone up to 5 km away and puts Ethernet speeds and 802.11 accesses to users within hours. Because of the possible variability in locations that the system can be deployed, it is necessary to find the most useable channel at the site as quickly as possible. In addition to 28GHz radio links, the system also has a built-in channel sounder that measures and captures the channel impulse response of the current channel. Until now, there has been limited research on the relationship between the channel impulse response and the usability of the channel quantified using bit error rate. This thesis examines several different channels captured by CWT's channel sounder and simulates the BER using Cadence's SPW with time-domain models of the channels. This thesis goes on further to show that BER greatly depends on the channel impulse response and the symbol rate. / Master of Science

Implementation of a 3D terrain-dependent Wave Propagation Model in WRAP

Blakaj, Valon, Gashi, Gent January 2014 (has links)
The radio wave propagation prediction is one of the key elements for designing an efficient radio network system. WRAP International has developed a software for spectrum management and radio network planning. This software includes some wave propagation models which are used to predict path loss. Current propagation models in WRAP perform the calculation in a vertical 2D plane, the plane between the transmitter and the receiver. The goal of this thesis is to investigate and implement a 3D wave propagation model, in a way that reflections and diffractions from the sides are taken into account. The implemented 3D wave propagation model should be both fast and accurate. A full 3D model which uses high resolution geographical data may be accurate, but it is inefficient in terms of memory usage and computational time. Based on the fact that in urban areas the strongest path between the receiver and the transmitter exists with no joint between vertical and horizontal diffractions [10], the radio wave propagation can be divided into two parts, the vertical and horizontal part. Calculations along the horizontal and vertical parts are performed independently, and after that, the results are combined. This approach leads to less computational complexity, faster calculation time, less memory usage, and still maintaining a good accuracy. The proposed model is implemented in C++ and speeded up using parallel programming techniques. Using the provided Stockholm high resolution geographical data, simulations are performed and results are compared with real measurements and other wave propagation models. In addition to the path loss calculation, the proposed model can also be used to estimate the channel power delay profile and the delay spread.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Rodrigo Eiji Motoyama.pdf: 2165877 bytes, checksum: 47823bb4b4b2fbde03c5d21d05fa7982 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-06-16 / Fundo Mackenzie de Pesquisa / The aim of this work is to introduce a performance analysis methodology for Brazilian Digital TV signal reception's condition in indoor environment. The methodology was developed based in tests with other digital TV standards transmission, as well as recommendations and guidelines issued by extensive knowledge in telecommunications systems institutions. Based on these references, it was developed a methodology taking into account the devices for signal capture (different antennas types), using suitable measurement equipments, the parameters of the signal degradation agent, the decoded image quality analysis and the concepts related to measurement methods. The methodology was tested in the field trials conducted in São Paulo city and from the results it was conjectured the viability to describe the characteristic of a reception in indoor environment. The data collected in the field was the signal spectrum image, the constellation of the modulation, the delay profile of the signal, and other information recorded in the spectrum analyzer. The variation of the field strength, the number of the multipath and noise strength, were taken into consideration for the selection of the captured data used to verify the influence caused by these parameters in the digital signal reception´s. The digital signal converter, together with a methodology for analysis of the decoded image called Quasi Error Free (QEF), served as a parameter for evaluate the image decoded in the tested point, i.e., if there is the presence of reception digital signal or not. The results are showed in forms of graphs to provide the profile of indoor reception. The result of this analysis determined the viability of the procedures and the parameters considered for the assessment to receiving the digital signal modulated in the brazilian system.

[en] MIMO MEASURED CHANNELS: CAPACITY RESULTS AND ANALYSIS OF CHANNEL PARAMETERS / [pt] MEDIDAS DO CANAL MIMO INDOOR: ANÁLISE DA CAPACIDADE E DOS PARÂMETROS DO CANAL

ROBSON DOMINGOS VIEIRA 21 March 2006 (has links)
[en] Multiple antenna systems known as MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) systems have been proposed as an effective way to address the user demand for high data rate applications in wireless systems. This is especially important in systems where the capacity attained with traditional techniques is very limited due to the adverse characteristics of the propagation environment. With MIMO, some of these characteristics are used to create parallel channels producing significant increase in capacity. The analysis of MIMO capacity is based on models developed from the statistical behavior of the multiple links between the transmitting and receiving antennas, and therefore there has been large interest in measuring these characteristics in typical scenarios and in relating the data to system parameters. In this thesis the results of a MIMO wideband measurement campaign carried out in an indoor scenario with a carrier frequency of 2 GHz is presented. The wideband and narrowband channel capacity and several channel parameters are evaluated from the measured data. The channel parameters are estimated using the frequency domain Space-Alternating Generalized Expectation maximization (FD- SAGE) algorithm. Temporal and spatial dispersions of the multipath channel are calculated from the estimated parameters and an eigenvalue analysis is performed seeking to relate the capacity values to the number of parallel channels. In addition, the correlation between channel capacity and physical parameters as antenna spacing, angle spread, delay spread, number and power of multipath components is investigated.

[en] ACTUAL MOBILE RADIO PROPAGATION CHANNEL RESPONSES ESTIMATES IN THE SPATIAL AND TEMPORAL DOMAINS / [pt] ESTIMAÇÃO DAS RESPOSTAS DO CANAL REAL DE PROPAGAÇÃO RÁDIO MÓVEL NOS DOMÍNIOS ESPACIAL E TEMPORAL ANÁLISE DA SUPRESSÃO DE RUÍDO POR DECOMPOSIÇÃO WAVELET COMO TÉCNICA COMPLEMENTAR DE PROCESSAMENTO

[en] In the present mobile communications scenario, researchers have turned once again special attention to antennae arrays, particularly when adaptive schemes are employed to modify its radiation patterns. One of its main applications results in considerable increases to the spectral efficiency of present and next generation mobile systems. The other major application is headed towards position location systems, since some of the known techniques comprise angle-of-arrival estimation using antennae arrays. Under such possibilities, mobile radio propagation channel variations studies grow in relevance, specially regarding the antennae arrays main domain of action: the spatial domain. The present work tries to contribute to the overstated context, experimentally investigating the actual mobile radio channel over the temporal (delays) and spatial (angles of arrival) domains. Regionally speaking, similar contributions based on simulations are already found, but none based on measurements. In special, 1.8 GHz indoor soundings have been carried out. Two different temporal spatial sounding techniques have been deployed, based on na available wideband channel sounder successfully assembled and tested as the major contribution of a MSc. dissertation recently presented by a member of the same research team to which this thesis belongs. One of such techniques sinthesyzes the array carrying the sounding out with a single antenna, which is successively moved to occupy the spots corresponding to the array elements. The other method employs an actual array. For both cases, the simplest array configuration has been used: the uniform linear one. Space-time spectra were not directly available in real time during the soundings. Its estimates have been processed later, applying techniques such as the correlogram over the delay domain, and four distinct methods over the spatial domain, the main focus of the present work. Two conventional methods have been used, as well as two parametric ones, potentially capable to increase the estimates resolution, assuming reasonable hypotheses regarding the expected responses. With the estimated spectral responses in hands, comparisons with theoretical estimates allowed a performance assessment of the employed methods. In addition to the spatial channel experimental investigation, the wavelets theory potential of application to the mobile-radio channel study has been checked out. Notably, one of the wavelets theory major applications has been tested as a post-processing technique to improve delay-domain spectral responses. Wavelet decomposition based de-noising has been applied to a huge measurements ensemble, available as the product of previous works of the research group to which this thesis is attached, leading to remarkable results.

Měření a modelování kanálů uvnitř a vně vozidel / Intra- and Out-of-Vehicle Channel Measurements and Modeling

Kukolev, Pavel January 2016 (has links)
Ověření možnosti lokalizace pomocí metody TOA (time of arrival).
