A COMPACT, LIGHTWEIGHT, LOW POWER, MULTI-FUNCTION TELEMETRY RECEIVER/COMBINER SYSTEM PROVIDES "HANDS OFF" AUTOMATION FOR SYSTEMS COST REDUCTION

O'Cull, Douglas C. 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 17-20, 1994 / Town & Country Hotel and Conference Center, San Diego, California / With the increased concerns for reducing cost and improving reliability in today's telemetry systems, many users are employing simulation and automation to guarantee reliable telemetry systems operation. This places an increased demand on the remote capabilities of the equipment used in the telemetry system. Furthermore, emphasis has been placed on the ability to decrease the space and power consumption of the telemetry system to facilitate transportability of the a single telemetry system to multiple sites. Finally, today's telemetry systems demand that all equipment provide multiple functions to provide the maximum performance for the lowest system cost.

High Rate Digital Demodulator ASIC

Ghuman, Parminder, Sheikh, Salman, Koubek, Steve, Hoy, Scott, Gray, Andrew 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 26-29, 1998 / Town & Country Resort Hotel and Convention Center, San Diego, California / The architecture of the High Rate (600 Mega-bits per second) Digital Demodulator (HRDD) ASIC capable of demodulating BPSK and QPSK modulated data is presented in this paper. The advantages of all-digital processing include increased flexibility and reliability with reduced reproduction costs. Conventional serial digital processing would require high processing rates necessitating a hardware implementation other than CMOS technology such as Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) which has high cost and power requirements. It is more desirable to use CMOS technology with its lower power requirements and higher gate density. However, digital demodulation of high data rates in CMOS requires parallel algorithms to process the sampled data at a rate lower than the data rate. The parallel processing algorithms described here were developed jointly by NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). The resulting all-digital receiver has the capability to demodulate BPSK, QPSK, OQPSK, and DQPSK at data rates in excess of 300 Mega-bits per second (Mbps) per channel. This paper will provide an overview of the parallel architecture and features of the HRDR ASIC. In addition, this paper will provide an overview of the implementation of the hardware architectures used to create flexibility over conventional high rate analog or hybrid receivers. This flexibility includes a wide range of data rates, modulation schemes, and operating environments. In conclusion it will be shown how this high rate digital demodulator can be used with an off-the-shelf A/D and a flexible analog front end, both of which are numerically computer controlled, to produce a very flexible, low cost high rate digital receiver.

IMPROVING THE DETECTION EFFICIENCY OF CONVENTIONAL PCM/FM TELEMETRY BY USING A MULTI-SYMBOL DEMODULATOR

Geoghegan, Mark 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 23-26, 2000 / Town & Country Hotel and Conference Center, San Diego, California / Binary PCM/FM has been widely adopted as a standard by the telemetry community. It offers a reasonable balance between detection efficiency and spectral efficiency, with very simple implementation in both the transmitter and receiver. Current technology, however, allows practical implementations of more sophisticated demodulators, which can substantially improve the detection efficiency of the waveform, with no changes to the modulator. This is accomplished by exploiting the memory inherent in the phase continuity of the waveform. This paper describes the implementation and performance of a noncoherent multi-symbol demodulator for PCM/FM. Sensitivity to offsets in carrier frequency, timing, and modulation index is also examined. Simulation results are presented which demonstrate improvements in detection efficiency of approximately 2.5 dB over traditional noncoherent single symbol detectors.

STANDARD INTEROPERABLE DATALINK SYSTEM, ENGINEERING DEVELOPMENT MODEL

Cirineo, Tony, Troublefield, Bob 11 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 30-November 02, 1995 / Riviera Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada / This paper describes an Engineering Development Model (EDM) for the Standard Interoperable Datalink System (SIDS). This EDM represents an attempt to design and build a programmable system that can be used to test and evaluate various aspects of a modern digital datalink. First, an investigation was started of commercial wireless components and standards that could be used to construct the SIDS datalink. This investigation lead to the construction of an engineering developmental model. This model presently consists of wire wrap and prototype circuits that implement many aspects of a modern digital datalink.

EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS FOR MULTI-SYMBOL DETECTION OF PCM/FM

Geoghegan, Mark 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 22-25, 2001 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / It has been previously shown, through computer simulations, that a multiple symbol detector can provide substantial gains in detection efficiency (nearly 3 dB) over traditional PCM/FM detectors. This is accomplished by performing correlations over multiple symbol intervals to take advantage of the memory inherent in the continuous phase PCM/FM signal. This paper presents measured hardware results, from a prototype developed for the Advanced Range Telemetry (ARTM) Project, that substantiate the previously published performance and sensitivity predictions. Furthermore, this work confirms the feasibility of applying this technology to high-speed commercial and military telemetry applications.

Modulated Imaging Polarimetry

LaCasse, Charles January 2012 (has links)
In this work, image processing algorithms are presented for an advanced sensor classification known collectively as imaging modulated polarimetry. The image processing algorithms presented are novel in that they use frequency domain based approaches, in comparison to the data domain based approaches that all previous algorithms have employed. Under the conditions on the data and imaging device derived in this work, the frequency domain based demodulation algorithms will optimally reduced reconstruction artifacts in a least squared sense. This work provides a framework for objectively comparing polarimeters that modulate in different domains (i.e. time vs. space), referred to as the spectral density response function. The spectral density response function is created as an analog to the modulation transfer function (or the more general transfer function for temporal devices) employed in the design of conventional imaging devices. The framework considers the total bandwidth of the object to be measured, and then can consider estimation artifacts that arise in both time and space due to the measurement modality that has been chosen. Using the framework for objectively comparing different modulated polarimeters (known as the spectral density response function), a method of developing a Wiener filter for multi-signal demodulation is developed, referred to as the polarimetric Wiener filter. This filter is then shown to be optimal for one extensive test case. This document provides one extensive example of implementing the algorithms and spectral density response calculations on a real system, known as the MSPI polarimeter. The MSPI polarimeter has been published extensively elsewhere, so only a basic system description here is used as necessary to describe how the methods presented here can be implemented on this system.

Performance analysis of M-QAM with Viterbi soft-decision decoding

Manso, Rogerio C. 03 1900
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited / This thesis derives design tools for determining and improving performances of communication links that use M - QAM coherent demodulators associated with Viterbi soft-decision decoding (SDD) in Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) and Nakagami-m channels. Performance analyses for 16-QAM, 64-QAM, QPSK and BPSK associated with up to three convolutional codes, including the one used by the IEEE 802.11a standard and the dual-k code, are presented as practical applications. The main tools relate to the analytical derivation of upper bounds of the probability of bit error (Pb) for any M -ary coherent demodulator followed by SDD, a methodology for improving an upper bound of Pb tightening it to realistic data, and the obtaining of the specific ( ) d b spectrum for any convolutional code intended to operate with a certain M-symbol modulation. All derivations involve statistical considerations over the AWGN and Nakagami-m channels, as well as in-depth analyses of modulator constellations. The tools and models developed can provide great optimization to bandwidth-limited system designs that require high data rates, especially the wireless ones. Consequently, they have great application to many fields of digital communications, such as cellular telephony, wireless networking, satellite links, ship-to-shore and ship -to-ship communications. / http://hdl.handle.net/10945/1090 / Lieutenant Commander, Brazilian Navy
