Demography and Spread of Invasive Beavers in the Heterogeneous Landscapes of Patagonia

Pietrek, Alejandro January 2015 (has links)
<p>The introduction of the North American beaver (Castor canadensis) to Tierra del Fuego is a widely known example of a successful biological invasion. Beavers have impacted enormously the biodiversity of the island of Tierra del Fuego, and they are now spreading northward on the continent, prompting the governments of Argentina and Chile to seek methods to control their spread. Beavers first established in forests, where they were initially introduced, but by the 1990s they began to establish in the adjacent steppe. In this dissertation, I study the biology of invasive beavers across the two major habitat types in Patagonia and attempt to develop modeling tools that might be useful to manage their spread.</p><p>In chapter one I studied the history of the beaver introduction in Patagonia and provide evidence that the beaver introduction occurred as a single release event of 20 beavers from northern Manitoba, Canada. This not only clarifies the origin of the invasion, but also suggests that the beaver population of Patagonia descends from a smaller number of individuals than previously assumed.</p><p>In chapter two I studied the demography of invasive North American beavers in the two contrasting habitat types of the island of Tierra del Fuego, forest and steppe. Habitat differences can affect vital rates which may in turn impact the speed of the invasion, but this has been rarely addressed when managing the spread of invaders. I use repeated observations, mark-resight methods, telemetry and camera traps to estimate colony size and vital rates of beavers in the two habitats. Colony size and the number of offspring (“kits”) produced per colony per year were higher in the steppe, contrary to the belief that forest is better habitat. Here I suggest this may be the result of the longer time since invasion in the forests of Tierra del Fuego and that the forest subpopulation is showing density dependent regulation. Beaver survival was high in all age classes and was higher than survival rates recorded in North America. My work shows that beaver plasticity and predator release have likely facilitated the invasion in Patagonia. </p><p>In chapter three, I investigated the more recent invasion of beavers in an area of the Patagonian steppe. I utilized repeated high resolution satellite images to identify beaver ponds, and used them to study changes in beaver abundance and habitat use over time. The number of beaver ponds increased 85 % between 2005 and 2014. During this period, beavers changed their habitat selection pattern, presumably as a response to increased density. Beavers established on small watercourses in canyons first, but as more canyons became occupied over time, beavers moved to less preferred watercourses in plains and U-shaped valleys. Potential new beaver colonies established close to existing beaver ponds, suggesting proximity to a beaver pond is an important determinant of beaver colonization. Identifying habitat preferred by beavers in the steppe could help to increase early detection of the invader at the invasion front. This work highlights the importance of the use of high resolution remote sensing technologies to better understand and monitor biological invasions. </p><p>Finally, in chapter four, I built a spatially explicit individual-based model parameterized with data I collected in the field and use it to make management recommendations. Specifically I assessed the efficacy of a potential management strategy in which a “fire-break” (a zone beyond the current population front in which beavers are removed) perpendicular to the population front is instituted to attempt to prevent further northward spread of the beaver in continental Patagonia. I found that even a 100 km wide firebreak is insufficient to contain the spread of beavers, long dispersal events being the major cause of this failure. Further, I found that increasing the fraction of beavers culled within the firebreak does not decrease either the arrival time or the number of beavers that cross the firebreak. Counterintuitively, my model indicates that moderate levels of culling within the firebreak (rather than high) may be a more effective method to manage the invasion, likely as a result of inversely density dependent dispersal.</p> / Dissertation

Adulte vieillissant et personne Alzheimer en EHPAD : Dépendance et handicap / Ageing adult and person Alzheimer in EHPAD : Dependence and handicap

Gastaud, Pierre-Guy 19 November 2015 (has links)
This reflection is the outcome of a wage practice in the world of the handicap and the dependence. My clinical ground will leave my work as psychologist clinician on two EHPAD (a public institution and one other deprived). The look concerned this new population which some name " dependent adult " changes according to the place which we occupy. I suggested in this research work in anthropology moving closer to the question of the ageing to that of the handicap. If numerous speeches mix, a new category seems to be born: that of the helper who is often only person acting at home. In EHPAD, a accompaniment is also necessary because these helpers often have a workload, as not professionals, which is little perceived. Everything takes place in the possible accompaniment to substitute itself for the helper and accompany the latter in one " to make with " whom will allow to mitigate his negligences due to his (her) own losses. My anthropological questionings brought me to question the words of the contemporary which, even if they are not appropriate to my object of study, are nevertheless essential to think of our world. These words are: the "dependence", the "old age" and the "handicap" to whom are added " the death, the work, the memory and the sexuality ". Beyond the various speeches held around the dependence, we find especially stakes in power. Political but also medical or still associative power without forgetting the power on one. I propose by way of opening to develop this question of the powers.

Topics in macro finance

Ahmed, Salman January 2018 (has links)
In terms of the specific topics covered in the thesis, my research aims to further understanding of risky asset return and volatility behaviour from a macro-finance perspective. In three of the four chapters, the macro drivers of both risky asset returns (the first moment) and volatility (the second moment) are studied and analyzed in detail across different geographies and various time periods. The use of both long sample sets and relevant sub-sample periods allows for a more in-depth assessment of the nature and form of these drivers as well as their influence on risky asset return and volatility dynamics, whilst weakening the impact of any endogeneity bias which the empirical estimation framework used may be subject to. The earliest data used in this research starts from the 18th century. In the first chapter, entitled “Macro Drivers of Equity Market Volatility”, the focus is on the construction and analysis of macro state variables, which are shown to have a strong influence on the behaviour of equity return volatility, especially during periods of severe market upheaval. Chapter two examines the relative abilities of GARCH and Stochastic Volatility Models (SV) to forecast volatility, in a world where the true model can be depicted by an EGARCH(1,2) formulation. Turning to chapter three, the relationship between equity returns and inflation (specifically, if equities are a hedge against inflation) is explored using long-term historical data for the US, the UK, Germany and Japan. Finally, chapter four analytically tackles the question of how various investors' (institutional and retail) asset allocation decisions are dependent on both the formulation of the wealth maximization function and the differentiated nature of information signals. Specifically, this chapter focusses on how asset allocation behaviour of various categories of investors (facing different objective functions) may lead to “herding”.

In Semiarid this characteristic of the soil does not receive such important, often for lack of knowledge, working with the soil evenly. he characterization of the variability of soil attributes is necessary so that we can interpret the possible causes of variations in crop yields. The geoestatistic has been used often, specially in soil science as a way to analyze the behavior and distribution of soil propeeties in space. Thus, the objective of this study was analyze the spatial variability, through the tool GS+, the physical attributes of a typic fluvia underwent two systems use and management of soil: disking and mowing lines. The area managed by disking has 0.5 ha and the area has 2.5 ha mowing lines. Are located on the systematic plan of Experimental Farm in the Valley Curu Pemtecoste. Soil samples were taken in both disturbed and undisturbed areas obeying the spacing of 15 x 15 m totaling 99 points, 21 in the area with harrowing and 78 in the area by mowing between the rows. The mechanical resistance to penetration had the highest coefficient of variation. The density was the only attribute which there wasn’t spatial dependence structure. The other attributes (sand, clay, silt, micro and macroporosity and gravimetric soil moisture and the mechanical resistance to penetration) showed spatial dependence of medium until high. It was found through the maps generated by the software Surfer 8.0 sites of higher and lower concentrations in each area. It was observed that the mowing area is made between the lines showed lower values macroporosity and high penetration resistance, the constraint condition for the growth of roots.

It is well known that sowing periods for some crops depend on rain and temperature conditions, and that the harvesting period may vary from region to region. Several studies on the effect of temperature on plants and grain production have been carried out in Brazil, using classic statistical procedures. This study offers an alternative for the analysis of mean air temperature values involving spatial data distribution. Data from 33 agrometeorological stations, collected daily by IAPAR (Agronomical Institute of Paraná, Brazil), were used to generate climatic maps for the state, adopting an efficient, simple and accurate technique (Geostatistics). Geostatistics takes into consideration the associations among neighboring samples through its geometry, i.e., the location of samples in the field, and detects the influence of one sample over the other according to the distance between them. Interpolation geostatistical techniques based on these associations among neighboring samples allows to estimating values for non-sampled locations efficiently. The existence of spatial dependence is detected by the variogram or covariance function. Data from the geostatistical analysis showed spatial dependence in the atmospheric mean temperature for the months of January and July which was best expressed by the spherical model. Temperature estimates from non-sampled points (a square with 50 columns and 35 lines, totaling 1750 points around the state) were obtained by the Universal Kriging interpolation technique, and the mappings were more efficient compared to those from Caviglione et al. (2000), even when altitude was considered an auxiliary variable.

The purpose of this work is to analyze how the government of Hugo Chávez has proposed to overhaul the Venezuelan State, through a process of drafting a new constitution and based upon a nationalistic and Bolivarian rhetoric, which sought to radically transform the economic structure, but was limited by the strength of the permanence of the institutional legacy of the country which, in turn, was built up on the oil dependence and on a rentier logic basis. For this, we recur to authors that work with the institutional dimension of economic development and care in explaining why in the face of similar material conditions, distinct results regarding the level of accomplished economic development are achieved. The answer would lie in different paths of institutional construction, as there are arrangements that encourage the actors to produce and innovate, while others stimulate unproductive and predatory actions. We try to show that the institutions built over time in Venezuela, basically encouraged the rentier logic among the social actors, from the entrepreneurs to the work unions. For this we use the concept of lock-in, and especially the concept of path dependence. Both allow us to classify the historical dimension of the problem, showing how actors have continuously adopted strategies and actions which reinforced and blocked any possibility of changes, since the sectors with greater bargaining power hampered any modification in existing arrangements as they were benefited by them. Also the main source of path dependence are increasing returns of existing arrangements, which in the case of Venezuela, make any change in the rentier model rather difficult. This work shows that, even taking into account that Chávez proposes a rentier-based socialism, what means the model is kept even though nationalized, it still repeats what was done in previous decades, albeit with a social...
