EVIDENCE FOR THE INDEPENDENT EVOLUTION OF VISUAL PERCEPTION DURING SEAFINDING BY HATCHLING LEATHERBACK SEA TURTLES (DERMOCHELYS CORIACEA)Unknown Date (has links)
Hatchling marine turtles exhibit a positive phototaxis by crawling toward the lowest and brightest horizon when they emerge from nests on the beach at night, which should lead them to the ocean (“seafinding”). Previous research with cheloniid (loggerhead and green turtle) hatchlings demonstrated that the perceptual spectral sensitivities are well below the light available on the beach regardless of lunar phase. The goal of this research was to determine the perceptual spectral sensitivities of leatherback hatchlings, the most distantly related of all extant sea turtle species. This study revealed that, like cheloniids, leatherbacks are most sensitive to shorter wavelengths (< 500 nm). However, leatherbacks were 10 – 100x less sensitive than cheloniids at all tested wavelengths. INJURY ANALYSIS OF LEATHERBACK SEA TURTLES (DERMOCHELYS CORIACEA) NESTING ON NORTHERN PALM BEACH COUNTY, FLORIDA, USA BEACHESUnknown Date (has links)
The leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) is facing global declines; however, the Florida stock is generally increasing. Various studies have identified threats to sea turtles, but there is a need to quantify population-level threats. I used external examination and blood analyses of leatherbacks nesting on northern Palm Beach County, Florida beaches to understand the impact(s) that physical injuries have on this population. Notable injuries were present on 118 of 167 (70.7%) turtles. Fisheries injuries were more prevalent than other anthropogenic injuries; however, there was a higher overall prevalence of natural injuries. There were no notable findings from my blood analyses. My results suggest that while natural injuries are more common than anthropogenic injuries in the nesting population of Florida leatherbacks, anthropogenic injuries are more likely to result in severe traumatic wounds. Interpreting the Pre-Nesting Foraging Ecology of Florida’s Leatherback Turtles (Dermochelys coriacea)Unknown Date (has links)
The migratory behavior of North Atlantic leatherback turtles (Dermochelys
coriacea) has been documented in the Wider Caribbean, but the migratory movements of
leatherbacks nesting in South Florida are relatively understudied. Our knowledge of their
migrations is currently limited to ten nesting females tracked from the east coast of
Florida that either moved north to the Northern Atlantic or east to the coast of Western
Africa. These results bring to light the need for further investigation and larger sample
sizes to identify and determine the relative importance of the different foraging areas for
the leatherbacks nesting in South Florida. Here, I analyzed stable carbon (δ13C) and stable
nitrogen (δ15N) values in whole blood and skin of leatherbacks nesting in South Florida
between 2014 and 2017 to estimate the putative foraging origins of these nesters prior to
coming to South Florida to nest. This study provides some of the first stable isotope
inferences and insights into the variable pre-nesting foraging habitat locations of

Jaguar (Panthera onca) activity on the beach of Tortuguero National Park, Costa RicaRosendal, Erik January 2011 (has links)
The jaguars (Panthera onca) of Tortuguero National Park, Costa Rica, sometimes kills and eats green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas), they also, though less often, kill and eat leatherback sea turtles (Dermochelys coriacea). The three species are considered endangered and are listed in CITES. It was the aim of this study to find out more about the jaguars behaviour in the area. To discern any patterns of jaguar and turtle activity on the beach the number of tracks per eighth of a mile was recorded on a daily basis for 26 days and then analyzed. It was also considered to be of interest to determine how many jaguars could be responsible for the predation of sea turtles. In addition to this average beach width was measured for each eighth of a mile. There was a noticeable difference in jaguar activity on the beach between days of recording. Analysis found that the beach width could possibly have a small positive effect on jaguar activity. No correlation was found between jaguar and turtle activity. It is believed that the reason that there was no correlation between jaguar activity and turtle activity was due to most of the tracks used to estimate turtle activity had originated from leatherback turtles, which are not as often predated by jaguars as the green turtle. An estimation of five or six jaguars was made using photographs of pugmarks and a method of track discrimination together with information from personnel from the Jalova station.

Estudos com o intuito de quantificar essa interação, bem como os fatores que influenciam a mesma, são crescentes, para os quais é necessário conhecer a distribuição dos animais, e correlacioná-la com variáveis ambientais e operacionais da pesca. O presente estudo visa avaliar e quantificar os padrões espaço-temporais das capturas acidentais das tartarugas marinhas C. caretta e D. coriacea na região Sudeste/Sul do Brasil, com base em dados coletados pelo Projeto TAMAR ICMBio, entre 2003 e 2010, a partir de um programa de observadores à bordo da frota comercial com espinhel pelágico, assim como correlacioná-los com variáveis ambientais, biológicas e operacionais. Para tal, foram utilizados métodos estatísticos, como os Modelos Aditivos Generalizados para Posição, Escala e Forma (GAMLSS). Foram verificadas variações interanuais e sazonais, com destaque para maiores capturas por unidade de esforço (CPUE) no outono. A temperatura superficial do mar foi a variável abiótica de maior correlação com a CPUE de C. caretta, sendo tipo de isca, a variável operacional mais significativa. Para D. coriacea, profundidade e longitude foram os fatores que melhor explicam a CPUE. Padrões de distribuição ontogenética e áreas prioritárias de conservação para essas populações são discutidas, assim como os efeitos potenciais do aquecimento do oceano. Beach Nourishment: Effects on the Hatching & Emergence Success Rates of Leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), Loggerhead (Caretta caretta), and Green (Chelonia mydas) Sea TurtlesCaderas, Jenna 01 July 2016 (has links)
Broward County, Florida is a popular tourism destination. Due to its popularity, much of the shoreline has been modified and natural habitats were replaced with infrastructure such as houses, condominiums, resorts, and restaurants. The same Broward County beaches utilized by tourists and residents are important for three species of nesting sea turtles, including the Leatherback, Dermochelys coriacea, Loggerhead, Caretta caretta, and Green, Chelonia mydas, Turtles. The Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program (BCSTCP) collects yearly data in order to study these endangered reptiles. Increased anthropogenic effects including further coastal development (public & private), public beach events, public beach access, as well as natural events, have caused these important nesting beaches to erode and narrow. In an effort to control this erosion damage, Broward County has performed a number of beach nourishment projects. This study found yearly fluctuations in sea turtle hatching and emergence success rates, and years of beach nourishment projects significantly decreased these rates. Yearly hatching data available from Broward County concludes that beach nourishment, as well as hurricanes and tropical storms cause decreases in sea turtle hatching and emergence success rates in Broward County. Additionally, nest depth and sea turtle size increases the hatching and emergence success rates from females that are not too large or too small that nest in Broward County.

FORAGING ECOLOGY OF NESTING GREEN, OLIVE RIDLEY, AND LEATHERBACK TURTLES FROM NORTHWEST COSTA RICAAlison Jenele Meeth (10716291) 28 April 2021 (has links)
<div>Understanding what sea turtles are feeding on and where they are feeding is key to understand their overall biology and will aid in understanding what type of management actions are necessary in order to conserve and protect these endangered species. Here I set out to (1) examine the population-level isotopic profiles of three sea turtle species in the Eastern Tropical Pacific; (2) determine differences in their foraging strategies; (3) attempt to gain insights about their pre-nesting origins; and (4) determine whether body size would influence the isotopic values of an individual turtle.</div><div>Stable isotope analysis (δ<sup>13</sup>C and δ<sup>15</sup>N values) was conducted on tissue samples from 52 sea turtles nesting on Playa Cabuyal, Costa Rica; 28 Pacific green (<i>Chelonia mydas</i>), 20 olive ridley (<i>Lepidochelys olivacea</i>), and 4 leatherback (<i>Dermochelys coriacea</i>). Nine satellite transmitters were also deployed on a separate population of post-nesting Pacific green turtles from Playa Cabuyal.</div><div>Based on isotopic profiles, green turtles in the Eastern Tropical Pacific were found to be feeding at a higher trophic level when compared to green turtles in other regions and this was supported by their increased δ<sup>15</sup>N values (16 ± 0.8 ‰). Rather than shifting to herbivory as adults, green turtles foraging in the eastern Pacific are potentially remaining omnivorous. Tracking data further confirmed that green turtles are coastal migrators and are probably inhabiting areas with high δ<sup>15</sup>N values within this region. Olive ridley turtles are exhibiting similar behavior to olive ridley turtles elsewhere due to minimal variance in their isotopic profiles (δ<sup>13</sup>C = -15.1 ± 0.7 ‰, δ<sup>15</sup>N =14.2 ± 0.8 ‰) and their known nomadic behavior. Although a small sample size, leatherback turtles showed a shift in their foraging habitats suggesting they are also feeding inshore in addition to their pelagic behavior due to their increased δ<sup>13</sup>C values (-15.5 ± 0.4 ‰). Further, as body size increased in olive ridley’s, the δ<sup>15</sup>N values significantly decreased suggesting that larger turtles prefer deeper pelagic waters with less enriched N isotope concentrations. However, in order to rule out possible external factors influencing this relationship, knowing where the turtle is originating from is crucial. This project provides data for developing isoscapes in the Eastern Tropical Pacific to aid in understanding the spatial distribution of sea turtles and their foraging grounds and the impact that foraging area may have on overall biology of these species. This information can be used to prioritize high use foraging habitats and determine the most effective management practices for protecting these species and the prey and habitat on which they rely.</div>

<b>Clutch success and innovative satellite tracking of leatherback sea turtles on Bioko Island,</b><b>Equatorial Guinea</b>Trevor L Proctor (18423216) 22 April 2024 (has links)
<p dir="ltr">The Leatherback Sea Turtle (<i>Dermochelys coriacea</i>) is a globally vulnerable species suffering from declining populations due to anthropogenic pressures. There are seven recognized Leatherback Sea Turtle regional management units; however, the Southeast Atlantic unit is considered data deficient. Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea, is a primary nesting rookery for the Southeast Atlantic regional management unit and has some of the world’s highest numbers of nesting Leatherback Sea Turtles. Despite Bioko Island’s importance to the species, little is known about the nesting ecology or post-nesting migratory movement and behaviors of its nesting Leatherback Sea Turtles. Here, I present the findings of two individual research projects on the nesting ecology of Leatherback Sea Turtles on Bioko Island. First, I explored the long-term clutch success rates (i.e., hatching success and emergence success) of <i>in situ</i> Leatherback Sea Turtle nests on Bioko and searched for associated variables. I found significant spatiotemporal variation over nine nesting seasons, likely driven by individual beach characteristics rather than regional climate patterns. Secondly, I described a novel effort to use solar-reliant towable transmitters to track the post-nesting migratory movements and behaviors of Leatherback Sea Turtles nesting on Bioko Island. With the results from each project, I make recommendations to further the current conservation and research initiatives of Leatherback Sea Turtles.</p>

Les organismes font face à des compromis entre leur reproduction, leur maintenance et leur survie, dont découlent des stratégies adaptatives énergétiques, comportementales et écologiques.Ce travail de thèse propose de préciser les stratégies de reproduction chez la tortue luth Dermochelys coriacea nidifiant en Guyane. Nous avons étudié les caractéristiques maternelles, les performances de reproduction et les potentiels liens existants entre la migration et la reproduction chez une population d’individus d’identité connue, suivis grâce à un suivi longitudinal original combinant biométrie, physiologie et biologie moléculaire.Premièrement nous montrons que les tortues luth opèrent comme des reproducteurs sur capital, i.e., leur reproduction repose sur les ressources stockées sous forme de réserves corporelles pendant la migration précédant la saison de ponte. D’autre part, nous suggérons que les femelles ajustent la durée de leur migration en fonction des conditions océanographiques rencontrées pendant la migration. Ceci leur permettrait, à l’échelle de la vie, de répondre au compromis entre la reproduction en cours et les reproductions futures. Enfin, notre démarche souligne l’importance de prendre en compte les caractéristiques individuelles dans la compréhension des stratégies de reproduction, et de manière ultime pour l’établissement de modèles réalistes de la dynamique des populations, notamment dans le cas d’espèces emblématiques telles que les tortues marines. / Organisms face trade-offs between their reproduction, maintenance and survival, from which result adaptative strategies at the energetics, behavioural and ecological levels.This PhD work investigates the reproductive strategies used by leatherback turtles, Dermochelys coriacea, nesting in French Guiana. We investigated maternal characteristics, reproductive output, and the possible links between migration and reproduction in a population of known identity, studied through a unique longitudinal monitoring, based on complementary approaches combining biometry, physiology and molecular biology.First, we found that leatherback turtles are capital breeders, i.e. females’ reproductive output displayed during their nesting season relies on body reserves previously stored during their migration. Second, we suggested that leatherback females adjust the duration of the migration according to the oceanographic conditions they experienced during migration. At a lifetime scale, this may allow females to face the trade-off between current and future reproductions. Finally, our approach highlights the importance to take into account individual characteristics in order to better understand reproductive strategies, and further assess realistic models of population dynamics, particularly when considering emblematic species such as sea turtles.
