Numerical Investigation Of Effective Surge Tank Dimensions In Hydropower Plants Under Various Hydraulic Conditions

In water conveyance systems, sudden changes in the flow velocity cause a phenomenon called waterhammer associated with high pressure head changes. Unless a control device is used as a precaution, waterhammer may result in costly damages and even in some cases, loss of human lives. In light of this concept, different control devices that can protect the systems against waterhammer are introduced so that the great pressure differences are absorbed and the system is maintained undamaged. In this thesis, the main functions, the requirements for its construction and the different types of the surge tanks are explained. The governing differential equations defining the flow conditions of the surge tanks and their solutions are provided. In addition, for the use of design engineers a procedure to determine proper dimensions of a surge tank is developed. For the sake of dimensioning the surge tank effectively, empirical equations, which calculate the height of three different types of surge tanks with dimensionless parameters, are obtained. With the help of regression analysis, the correlation between the parameters of the developed equations are determined, and found to be relatively high. Finally, the economical aspect of a surge tank is discussed and comparison parameters are introduced to the designer.

Complex Product Architecture Analysis using an Integrated Approach

yes / Product design decomposition and synthesis is a constant challenge with its continuously increasing complexity at each level of abstraction. Currently, design decomposition and synthesis analytical tasks are mostly accomplished via functional and structural methods. These methods are useful in different phases of design process for product definition and architecture but limited in a way that they tend to focus more on ‘what’ and less on ‘how’ and vice versa. This paper combines a functional representation tool known as System State Flow Diagram (a solution independent approach), a solution search tool referred as Morphology Table, and Design Structure Matrix (mainly a solution dependent tool). The proposed approach incorporates Multiple Domain Matrix (MDM) to integrate the knowledge of both solution independent and dependent analyses. The approach is illustrated with a case study of solar robot toy, followed by its limitations, future work and discussion.

GRAPH-BASED ANALYSIS FOR E-COMMERCE RECOMMENDATION

Recommender systems automate the process of recommending products and services to customers based on various types of data including customer demographics, product features, and, most importantly, previous interactions between customers and products (e.g., purchasing, rating, and catalog browsing). Despite significant research progress and growing acceptance in real-world applications, two major challenges remain to be addressed to implement effective e-commerce recommendation applications. The first challenge is concerned with making recommendations based on sparse transaction data. The second challenge is the lack of a unified framework to integrate multiple types of input data and recommendation approaches.This dissertation investigates graph-based algorithms to address these two problems. The proposed approach is centered on consumer-product graphs that represent sales transactions as links connecting consumer and product nodes. In order to address the sparsity problem, I investigate the network spreading activation algorithms and a newly proposed link analysis algorithm motivated by ideas from Web graph analysis techniques. Experimental results with several e-commerce datasets indicated that both classes of algorithms outperform a wide range of existing collaborative filtering algorithms, especially under sparse data. Two graph-based models that enhance the simple consumer-product graph were proposed to provide unified recommendation frameworks. The first model, a two-layer graph model, enhances the consumer-product graph by incorporating the consumer/product attribute information as consumer and product similarity links. The second model is based on probabilistic relational models (PRMs) developed in the relational learning literature. It is demonstrated with e-commerce datasets that the proposed frameworks not only conceptually unify many of the existing recommendation approaches but also allow the exploitation of a wider range of data patterns in an integrated manner, leading to improved recommendation performance.In addition to the recommendation algorithm design research, this dissertation also employs the random graph theory to study the topological characteristics of consumer-product graphs and the fundamental mechanisms that generate the sales transaction data. This research represents the early step towards a meta-level analysis framework for validating the fundamental assumptions made by different recommendation algorithms regarding the consumer-product interaction generation process and thus supporting systematic recommendation model/algorithm selection and evaluation.

A method to support the requirements trade-off of integrated vehicle health management for unmanned aerial systems

he digital revolution in the latter part of the twentieth century has resulted in the increased use and development of Cyber-Physical Systems. Two of which are Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM). Both are relatively new areas of interest to academia, military, and commercial organisations. Designing IVHM for a UAS is no easy task – the complexity inherent in UAS, with projects involving multiple partners/organisations; multiple stakeholders are also interested in the IVHM. IVHM needs to justify itself throughout the life of the UAS, and the lack of established knowledge makes it hard to know where to start. The establishment and analysis of requirements for IVHM on UAS is known to be important and costly – and for IVHM a complex one. There are multiple stakeholders to satisfy and ultimately the needs of the customer, all demanding different things from the IVHM, and with limited resources they need to be prioritised. There are also many hindrances to this: differences in language between stakeholders, customers failing to see the benefits, scheduling conflicts, no operational data. The contribution to knowledge in this thesis is the IVHM Requirements Deployment (IVHM-RD) – a method for a designer of UAS IVHM to build a tool which can consolidate and evaluate the various stakeholder’s requirements. When the tool is subsequently populated with knowledge from individual Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), it provides a prioritised set of IVHM requirements. The IVHM-RD has been tested on two design cases and generalised for the use with other designs. Analysis of the process has been conducted and in addition the results of the design cases have been analysed in three ways: how the results relate to each design case, comparison between the two cases, and how much the relationships between requirements are understood. A validation exercise has also been conducted to establish the legitimacy of the IVHM-RD process. This research is likely to have an impact on the elicitation and analysis of IVHM requirements for UAS – and the wider design process of IVHM. The IVHM-RD process should also prove of use to designers of IVHM on other assets. The populations of the design cases also provide information which could be useful to other designer and future research.

Dynamic Composition and Management of Virtual Devices for Ad Hoc Multimedia Service Delivery

Pervasive computing implies the invisibility of the technology involved in providing ubiquity, such that technology is integrated into the environment and non-intrusive. In such a manner, computing and networking resources become diffused into physical environments, enabling users to exploit their provided functionalities such that functionality is distributed, enabling it to be controlled, monitored, managed, and extended beyond what it was initially designed to do. Moreover, computer awareness moves towards user-centricity, whereby systems seamlessly adapt to the characteristics, preferences, and current situations of users and their respective surrounding environments. Users exploit such functionalities in the form of a virtual device, whereby a collection of heterogeneous devices in the vicinity of the user are behaving as one single homogeneous device for the benefit of the user in solving some given task. This dissertation investigates the problem of dynamic composition and management of virtual devices for ad hoc multimedia service delivery and proposes an autonomous policy driven framework for virtual device management. The framework consists of a hierarchical structure of distributed elements, including autonomic elements, all working towards the self-management of virtual devices. The research presented in this dissertation addresses the functionalities of these components. More specifically, contributions are made towards the autonomous management of virtual devices, moving away from infrastructure based schemes with heavy user involvement to decentralized and zero touch (i.e., no user involvement) solutions. In doing so, the components and methodology behind a policy-driven autonomous framework for the dynamic discovery, selection, and composition of multimodal multi-device services are presented. The framework operates in an ad hoc network setting and introduces a Service Overlay Network (SON) based definition of a virtual device. Furthermore, device and service discovery, composition, integration, and adaptation schemes are designed for Mobile Ad hoc Network Environments (MANETs) enabling users to generate, on-the-fly, complex strong specific systems, embedding in a distributed manner, QoS models providing compositions that form the best possible virtual device at the time of need. Experimental studies are presented to demonstrate the performance of the proposed schemes.
