Elementary Teachers' Perceptions of Technology Proficiencies and Motivation to Integrate Technology in School Curriculi

Despite the availability of technological resources, the number of teachers integrating and using technology innovatively in the classroom is unknown. This qualitative investigation explored teachers' perceptions of proficiency in the use of computer technology in the classroom. Self-determination theory assisted the examination of motivation as decisions are made to integrate technology into the classroom curriculum. The research questions addressed the self-determination of teachers, decision making processes to integrate technology, and perceived technology competence. A qualitative, multiple case study design was used to explore the views of 10 technology-using elementary teachers in the use of technology in the classroom. These participants were interviewed, participated in a focus group, and submitted an integrated technology lesson plan. Data were analyzed using the constant comparative method. The results showed that teachers were found to be efficacious when incorporating technology into the curriculum and believed their actions could produce the desired results despite their technological skill level. Teachers were found to be self-determined and motivated to integrate technology; however, innovative practice was not evident while existing practice conformed to the instructional norms of the school. Implications for positive social change include allowing teachers to study current beliefs and practice, reflecting on best practices when integrating technology, and identifying technological innovation to enhance the learning of their own students. Recommendations include providing opportunities through professional development initiatives in which teachers and administrators alike study practice in collaborative ways, take ownership of instructional decisions, and take risks while integrating technology.

Investigations of Student and Team Creativity on an Introductory Engineering Design Project

Engineering is widely accepted as a creative discipline. However, research focused on assessment of student creativity in engineering studies is lacking. Creativity by definition encompasses both novelty and value and has been approached through investigations of person, product, process and environment. Contemporary socio-cultural theories of creativity recognize the subjective nature of creativity in terms of a person, domain, and field. Domain specific viewpoints recognize the necessity of specialized skills and knowledge beyond the scope of general creativity to attain advanced levels of creative achievement within a given domain. Given the breadth of these theoretical perspectives, the overarching goal of this research was to initiate a foundational understanding of student creativity through a sustainable energy themed engineering design project developed specifically for an introductory engineering course at Virginia Tech. This embedded mixed-methods study approached creativity through assessment as well as significance of correlations between students' creative thinking abilities, their creative performance and their perceptions of the design experience in terms of known creativity factors on the 8-week long open-ended engineering design project. The study is comprised of two research themes; the investigation begins in theme one with a focus on individual creativity leading to investigation of team creativity in theme two with data collected over two successive semesters (i.e., spring â 07 and fall â 07). Creativity assessment measures included a test of creative thinking abilities, the Abbreviated Torrance Test for Adults (ATTA) as well as application of the Consensual Assessment Technique (CAT), a widely used creativity measurement technique, with graduate student judges assessing creativity of student's brainstorming ideas and final designs. Student surveys were administered for each theme to assess students' perceptions of the design project. Results reveal a significant correlation (p < 0.05) between students' ATTA scores and perceptions of the project as open-ended and interesting. Additional factors significantly correlated (p < 0.05) with students' perceptions of the design experience as creative included finding the project meaningful, interesting, exciting, enjoyable and surprising. Results of inter-rater reliability analysis followed by a two-way ANOVA illustrated difficulties in establishing consistency of judges' assessment of technical brainstorming ideas and final designs. Theme one findings with students repeatedly discussing the importance of their team in the creative process on the design project were further substantiated in theme two, bringing fresh insights concerning the role of collaboration in student creativity in the introductory engineering course. Implications for future research begin with the necessity for establishing reliable judging criteria and training as well as determining appropriate judges used in the assessment of students' creative performance on the design project. This research provides an essential starting point for researchers interested in developing engineering design curriculum to foster creativity. / Ph. D.

Visual learning in a graphic design setting

Thesis (M.Tech. - Graphic Design, Dept. of Visual Arts and Design, Faculty of Human Sciences) -- Vaal University of Technology / An exploratory study was undertaken at three campuses of the Vaal University of Technology in response to weak examination results in one of the subjects of the graphic design curriculum. The aim of the study was to investigate visual learning strategies as used in conjunction with co-operative learning approaches in a higher education setting and to asses the appropriateness of these learning approaches in the discipline of graphic design at first-year level. The research questions that guided the study focused on how first-year graphic design learners experience (a) visual learning strategies, (b) a cooperative learning environment, as well as (c) the combination of these. The literature review component of the study covered (1) the fundamentals of visual learning, including the concepts of visual literacy, visual semiotics and visual culture; (2) graphic design education, especially in a South African context; and (3) principles of co~operative learning, including Avenant's requirements for successful group work. In the field work component of the study, multiple-choice questionnaires, open-ended questionnaires and focus group interviews were used as the main data collection methods. The results of the study did not indicate that first-year learners enrolled in the discipline of graphic design are likely to benefit from a combination of visual learning and co-operative learning strategies. Therefore, the implementation of a combination of the above-mentioned teaching strategies is not recommended in this setting.

Designers' Perceptions of Interdisciplinary Design Education.

The perceived value of interdisciplinary design among designers and the application of the design process was investigated. The research was designed to determine if interdisciplinary design was perceived to be beneficial to practitioners and educators. An 11-item survey was produced by the researcher and consisted of general demographic information, undergraduate education and training, and the benefits of interdisciplinary design. The sample was composed of representatives of the top 100 interior design firms of 2003 and members of the Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC). Respondents indicated training in Architecture, Graphic Design, Interior Design, and Industrial/Product Design, with Architecture and Interior Design comprising the majority of responses. The greater part of those surveyed indicated training in only one discipline. Results showed that interdisciplinary design is perceived to be beneficial; specifically, interdisciplinary design education makes designers professionally more marketable.

A Needs Survey of Interior Designers in the South Texas Area with Implications for Curriculum Revision of the Interior Design Program of the Department of Home Economics at Southwest Texas State University

The problem of this study was to compare the expectations of the interior design profession regarding entry level requirements of new graduates of Southwest Texas State University and the present interior design curriculum at Southwest Texas State University. Questionnaires seeking information regarding skills and knowledge thought necessary for graduating interior design students were sent to professional interior designers in the South Texas area. Simple descriptive statistics were used to analyze the responses. The survey of the interior designers practicing in the South Texas areas conducted in this needs assessment of the Interior Design program at Southwest Texas State University supports giving consideration to the development of new courses or content revision of existing interior design courses offered at Southwest Texas State University.

How Interactive Video (ITV) Web-Enhanced Format Affects Instructional Strategy and Instructor Satisfaction

This qualitative study explored the quality of technology associated with interactive video (ITV) classes in distance education programs and the resulting satisfaction of the instructors teaching this format. The participants were full time instructors of a rural community college that used the ITV format. Community college ITV instructors are knowledgeable about the ITV technology and are in need of research that explores the satisfaction of that technology. Distance education theory, social constructivism, individual and collaborative learning, and technology formed the foundation for the research. Grounded theory was used to generate a theory about the perceptions of the instructors. Data collected included surveys, interviews, and observations of the interviews. Data were analyzed using theoretical sampling, constant comparison, open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. Analysis indicated that instructors' perceived greater satisfaction teaching in an ITV environment when the structure of the class was optimum for the course, the audio/visual technology worked effectively, the Web-enhanced component of the course ran smoothly, IT was available, quality training was offered, and transactional distance was perceived as minimal. This grounded theory provides positive social change for other educators and administrators who teach ITV by guiding their efforts to use ITV course delivery systems in ways that ensure the fulfillment of needs for both instructors and their students.
