Thesis advisor: Katie Rapier / Through the years, people began to breed their dogs and cats with the intention for the pets to be useful in a certain skill. However, that has shifted to focus on their looks rather than their skills thanks to kennel clubs imposing standards on each breed. This has led irresponsible breeding practices to occur which in turn caused breeds to evolve negatively as breeds began to suffer from preventable genetic disorders and negative physical changes. Genetically manipulating soon shifted from pets to humans with PGD/IVF and CRISPR-Cas9. At first, there was a focus to use these methods to help cure and prevent genetic disorders. That has since shifted to people wanting to create the perfect child. Grubbe Ventilation AB is a sheet metal and ventilation company who provides design, installation, service, and repair of ventilation. The company is expanding their business by building a new facility in Umeå, Västerbotten. The property is designed to be used for both office and industrial work. Grubbe Ventelation AB has not yet decided upon wish system which is to be established to provide the building with heating and cooling. The consulting firm Umeå Projekt Team has therefore been asked to investigate the possibilities to invest in geothermal- heating and cooling. If the investigation of a geothermal heating- and cooling system would provide favorable results it would be a very appropriate alternative that provides energy at low costs and are an environmentally friendly option as the energy comes from stored solar energy in the ground is provided by stored solar energy in the ground. The facility ´s heating and cooling consumptions are calculated in the program BV2 and the result indicate a heating demand of 185 000 kWh per year due to thermal transmittance, transmission losses, heating of warm water and a cooling requirement of 5500 kWh. Three different systems of geothermal heating and cooling were tested in the computer program Energy Earth Design. The results show no difference in the dimensioning of the drill hole if merely heating were to be used or both heating and cooling were to be established. The only alteration in the investment is therefore the additional cost of the cooling machine. The geothermal heat pump is designed to cover 60-70 percent of the maximum heat demand of the facility. The additional 30-40 percent will be covered by additional heating. A geothermal heat pump of 40 kW who require a 30 kW electrical heater to cover additional heating would be appropriate for this project. An investment of geothermal heating and cooling would require five bore holes of 210 meters wish provide an investment cost of 307 050 sek for the boreholes and an total investment of 446050 sek with a pay-off time of 5,6 years without cooling and 471050 sek with cooling wish give a pay-off time of 5,9 years. If a special double U-piping were to be used only four boreholes would be required of 250 meters. That would give a total investment cost of 459240 sek and a pay-off time of 5,8 years.

As an understanding of users' tacit knowledge and latent needs embedded in user experience has played a critical role in product development, users’ direct involvement in design has become a necessary part of the design process. Various ways of accessing users' tacit knowledge and latent needs have been explored in the field of user-centred design, participatory design, and design for experiencing. User-designer collaboration has been used unconsciously by traditional designers to facilitate the transfer of users' tacit knowledge and to elicit new knowledge. However, what makes user-designer collaboration an effective strategy has rarely been reported on or explored. Therefore, interaction patterns between the users and the designers in three industry-supported user involvement cases were studied. In order to develop a coding system, collaboration was defined as a set of coordinated and joint problem solving activities, measured by the elicitation of new knowledge from collaboration. The analysis of interaction patterns in the user involvement cases revealed that allowing users to challenge or modify their contextual experiences facilitates the transfer of knowledge and new knowledge generation. It was concluded that users can be more effectively integrated into the product development process by employing collaboration strategies to intensify the depth of user involvement.

Além disso, precisa se relacionar com outros, atuando integrado com diferentes áreas do conhecimento para poder desenvolver soluções que atendam às demandas complexas dessa nova configuração de sociedade. A pesquisa de que trata esta dissertação tem por objetivo contribuir para a reflexão sobre o papel e as competências do designer quando integrando equipes multidisciplinares nas organizações. Como procedimentos metodológicos foram escolhidas as técnicas de grupo focal, aplicadas a indivíduos designers, e entrevistas em profundidade semiestruturadas aplicadas a indivíduos não designers integrantes de equipes de uma grande empresa pública de tecnologia da informação. Ao final deste estudo de caso pretende-se contribuir para a reflexão sobre o papel e as competências do designer atuando em equipes e em diálogo permanente com outras áreas do conhecimento.

The observation of cue-directed behavior in sign-tracking and goal-tracking rats following implantation of designer receptorsLongyear, Lauren 11 July 2017 (has links)
Increasing evidence that ordinary cues paired with reward can acquire value indicates that the incentive properties of rewards are capable of being transferred onto cues, making them incentive stimuli. Studies have begun focusing on isolating components of the reward circuit involved in imparting incentive salience onto a cue with the goal of identifying rats with susceptibilities to drug addiction. Such studies have found that under a Pavlovian Conditioned Approach (PCA) paradigm, sign-tracking rats are at increased risk for instilling incentive salience onto conditioned stimuli and for engaging in drug-related behavior. With better understanding of the neural basis of sign tracking and its behavioral aspect of drug seeking comes a better chance of discovering treatment methods for drug addiction. This study examines the potential behavioral outcomes of altering the pathway starting in the Ventral Pallidum (VP) and ending in the Ventral Tegmental Area (VTA) by using Designer Receptors Exclusively Activated by Designer Drugs (DREADDs). While there is some evidence of an interaction between the effects of DREADDs on this neural circuit and behavior, not all results presented here reach significance. Additional studies are needed to confirm the hypothesis of specific inhibitory DREADDs from the VP to the VTA causing increased amounts of sign tracking in rats as a way to assess whether this pathway is implicated in predisposing rats to sign-tracking behavior. / 2018-07-11T00:00:00Z
