A Study of the Transition of Youth from a Detention Center Education Program to a Standard School Education Program in Selected Southeastern StatesWatkins, Cheryl Graham 07 December 2007 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the factors which facilitate the successful transition of youth from a detention educational program to a mainstream educational program. The study investigated the following components: (a) informal or formalized transition programs, (b) the practices used to assist youth at the detention level transition to the educational mainstream, (c) program components used at the detention level to successfully transition youth to the educational mainstream, the importance of personnel in assisting youth in their transition, (d) factors which contribute to the successful transition from detention to the educational mainstream, (e) program components effective in moving youth from a detention education program to the educational mainstream, and (f) whether or not a detention education program with a formal or informal transition program makes a difference in recidivism rates.
A survey questionnaire was sent to 143 detention center administrators in the Southeastern United States . Descriptive data were run on all items in the survey. Cronbach's alpha test of reliability was used to assess internal consistency. Pearson correlation was used to compare consistency between independent and dependent variables. Finally, an independent sample t-test was conducted to examine if mean differences exist on Total Returned to a Detention Center by Transition Program.
Transitioning from a detention facility to the community is a difficult process. By making available to youth a comprehensive program during periods of incarceration, and collaborating with the local educational agency, youth are often better able to make the adjustment. This study emphasized that in order for youth to be successful once they leave a correctional facility, a linkage must exist among all stakeholders. / Ed. D.

The experiences of pregnant migrant women in detention: A qualitative studyArshad, F., Haith-Cooper, Melanie, Palloti, P. 06 September 2018 (has links)
Yes / Pregnant migrant women held in detention centres in the UK can be particularly vulnerable. They may have poor physical and mental health, which is exacerbated by their incarceration, and are at a disproportionally increased risk of maternal and perinatal mortality. Unpublished studies have found that pregnant migrant women have poor experiences in detention.
To explore pregnant migrant women's experiences of living in detention.
Method:
Four migrant women who had been held in detention while pregnant and two volunteer health professionals were interviewed.
Findings:
Results suggest that migrant women have very poor experiences in detention. Four key themes emerged: ‘challenges to accessing UK healthcare’, ‘exacerbation of mental health conditions, ‘feeling hungry’ and ‘lack of privacy’.
Conclusion:
These findings could be used to review maternity care in detention and ensure that detention staff understand the experiences of detained pregnant women so that the needs of this vulnerable group can be met.

Administrative detention of migrants Resumé The aim of this thesis was to critically evaluate the institute of administrative detention of migrants and decide whether it is and appropriate, proportionate and necessary measure or if it has become obsolete considering the development of recent years and whether it would be appropriate to replace it with more effective alternatives. In the first part of the thesis I have critically evaluated the legal framework regarding administrative detention of migrants. I analysed the impact of international law with the emphasis of human rights, laid out the rules as stated by fragmented European law directives and regulations. The most detailed analysis is of Czech legal framework, including mentions of its most problematic points both from past and present. Next I considered the nature of the institute as an administrative law instrument used to restrict someone on his personal liberty. Considering the insufficiency of mere legality as a criterion of legality and legitimacy of administrative detention, I evaluated the aims and purposes of the administrative detention of migrants. In the last part of the thesis I have raised some critical points against current legal framework and practice. I point out the abuse of administrative detention for other than legally stated...
