A literatura em formação docente tem sido pródiga em traçar perfis e características de bons professores, mas a formação docente que tem sido realizada apresenta muitas dificuldades em atingir esses objetivos. O que pode estar faltando? Os objetivos desta investigação centram-se em descrever e analisar a dinâmica geral de um programa de desenvolvimento profissional, com foco nas ações do formador, e conectar seus objetivos e ações no programa, em sentido amplo, com o quadro teórico disponível em formação docente. Nossa análise se compõe de duas partes. Na primeira, procedemos a uma caracterização geral do grupo de formação, incluindo a forma de abordagem dos conteúdos pelo formador, as tarefas designadas aos participantes e os objetivos gerais, explícitos tanto quanto implícitos, do programa. Na segunda parte da análise, apresentamos três dimensões da prática docente sobre as quais o formador atua: planejar, conduzir a aprendizagem e avaliar os resultados. Identificamos três saberes e ações transversais a todos os episódios de formação, que poderiam ser consideradas como metas maiores do programa: a reflexão sobre a prática, o exercício da autonomia docente e a compreensão da teoria construtivista. Conectamos essas metas com as formas de atuação do formador. Desenvolvemos nossas conclusões em termos de encontrar os necessários e essenciais presentes nesse grupo de formação, que proporcionam os bons resultados em termos da modificação das práticas docentes: o formador trabalhou a partir da prática docente de cada professor, começou todo o ensino pela atitude de ouvir o professor e cultivou abertura de espírito para incluir como conteúdos e atividades de ensino o que fosse necessário para auxiliar o desenvolvimento tanto profissional quanto pessoal dos participantes do programa. Unindo esses necessários e como as modificações pretendidas na prática docente são profundas e enraizadas nas próprias crenças epistemológicas dos professores e em suas decorrentes traduções em metodologias de ensino percebemos como um ponto essencial que o formador agiu, no programa, em consonância com as ações esperadas dos professores, ou seja, ele ensinou através do próprio exemplo, proporcionando a vivência necessária para uma mudança de paradigma sobre as ações educacionais. Verba volant, exempla trahunt. / The literature in teacher education has been generous in determining profiles and characteristics of good teachers, but the teacher formation that has been carried out faces many difficulties in attaining those aims. What can be missing? The objectives of this research center in describing and analyzing the general dynamics of a program of professional development, focusing the actions of the tutor, and connecting his objectives and actions in the program, with the theoretical framework in teacher education. Our analysis is composed of two parts. In the first, we perform a general characterization of the formation group, including the ways of approaching the topics, the tasks designated to the participants and the general objectives, both implicit and explicit, of the program. In the second part of the analysis we present three dimensions of the teacher practice about which the tutor acts: planning, conducting learning and evaluating the results. The purpose of this study was to examine the voices of Latino/a Senior Student Affairs Officers (SSAOs) in terms of described challenges in becoming a SSAO and how the intersection of race influences their lived experiences as SSAOs at selected public and private two- and four-year colleges and universities in the U.S. Latino/a SSAOs are dramatically underrepresented in American colleges and universities. The lived experiences of this unique group have been ignored in existing empirical literature. A particular focus of this research was to gain a better understanding of how Latino/a SSAOs experience and respond to what they perceive as racism, if any, and/or other forms of discrimination during this experience. The study was motivated by the company's result in a survey on global leadership training, in which it was classified in 2009 by the consulting firm Hewitt Associates, as the global company that better developed leaders in the corporate world. This is a case study with exploratory and descriptive purposes. The data collection was done with 55 high performers from different areas, ages, and with long careers in business. In the end, 30 professionals completed the questionnaire, which revealed that the company's talents recognize GTM programs and have positive expectations regarding the growth of their international careers by being part of them. They also recognize that their careers rely heavily on their personal efforts, although highlighting that leadership plays a direct role in the evolution and maintenance of such positions over time / O objetivo desta pesquisa é analisar a cultura de Gerenciamento Global de Talentos em uma empresa multinacional de Ti, seus processos e as expectativas de carreiras dos participantes desse programa. O estudo foi motivado pelo resultado da companhia em uma pesquisa sobre formação de liderança mundial, na qual ela foi classificada, em 2009, pela consultaria Hewitt Associates, como a empresa global que mais forma lideranças de qualidade no mundo das corporações. Trata-se de um estudo de caso com finalidade exploratória e descritiva. A coleta de dados foi feita com 55 profissionais de alto desempenho de diversas áreas, idades e tempos de carreira na empresa. Ao final, 30 profissionais responderam o questionário que demonstrou que os profissionais de talento da empresa reconhecem seus programas de GTM e têm, de forma geral, expectativas positivas em relação ao crescimento de suas carreiras internacionais por fazerem parte deles. Reconhecem também que suas carreiras dependem muito de seus esforços pessoais, mas não deixaram de observar que a liderança direta exerce um papel fundamental na evolução e manutenção dessas posições ao longo do tempo

Managing Competence Development Programs in a Cross-Cultural Organisation : What are the barriers and enablers?

<p>During the past decade, research on competence development and cross-cultural organisation has been acknowledged both in academic circles and by industrial organisations. Cross-cultural organisations that have emerged through globalisation are a manifestation of the growing economic interdependence among countries. In cross-cultural organisations, competence development has become an essential strategic tool for taking advantage of the synergy effects of globalisation. The objective of this thesis is to examine how competence development programs are conducted and to identify barriers and enablers for the success of such programs, especially in a cross-cultural organisation.</p><p>To identify the processes involved in managing competence development programs in a cross-cultural organisation, a case study method was chosen. A total of 43 interviews and 33 surveys were held with participants, facilitators and managers in competence development programs at four units of IKEA Trading Southeast Asia located in Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia, respectively. In addition to the observations made on these four competence development programs, a study of the literature in related research areas was conducted. The interviews were held and the survey data collected in 2003 and 2004.</p><p>In the findings, the barriers identified were cultural differences, assumptions, language, and mistrust; the enablers were cultural diversity, motivation, management commitment, and communication. The conclusions are that competence development is a strategic tool for cross-cultural organisations and that it is extremely important to identify barriers to, and enablers of, successful competence development, and to eliminate the barriers and support the enablers right from the early stages of competence development programs.</p> / Report Code: LIU-TEK-LIC-2006:44

A Study of Motivation Types and Behavior of Graduate Students in Future Faculty Preparation Programs

There currently exists a challenge in higher education to improve undergraduate education. The development and more adequate preparation of future faculty, who are current graduate students, is one of several options identified as a viable strategy to address this challenge. This dissertation explored the quality of motivation as a factor affecting the preparation or socialization of future faculty at two top-tier universities. The quality of motivation is believed salient to preparation and socialization. This study focused on the motivation types of teaching-focused future faculty preparation program (FFPP) completers, their programmatic experiences, and various personal and social factors, such as gender, program, and academic discipline, as reason for motivation type. This mixed methods research study was based on the tenets of self-determination theory and revealed quantitatively, through inferential statistics, that a significant difference exists in the motivation type of participants based on gender, program, and academic discipline. Qualitative findings, from focus group interviews, were that FFPP design characteristics included elements to satisfy the innate psychological need for competence but fell short in meeting the need for relatedness. The findings offer insights into aspects that affect the quality of motivation in program participants. They also suggest that in order to more adequately prepare and socialize future faculty, consideration must be given to the importance of satisfying innate psychological needs in an effort to enhance the quality of participant motivation. Both findings support the importance of relatedness in affecting the quality of motivation. The findings of this study support the notion that certain demographic or contextual factors, as well as the satisfaction of innate psychological needs are critical to motivation quality, internalization, behavior, and socialization. The results of this study will contribute to program developers' awareness of motivation quality and its effect on behavior to enhance the design of teaching-focused future faculty preparation programs and socialization. Through the use of motivation quality, this study serves as a catalyst for the more adequate preparation of future faculty to improve undergraduate education.

This study examines how and why organizations evaluate training and development within the organizations. The study has a qualitative approach based on semi-structured interviews, with office and organization development managers. The purpose of the study is to contribute with knowledge about how three large Swedish organizations evaluates training and development programs for staff members. Another purpose is to describe why the organizations evaluate training and development programs and to research if there is a further need to develop the organization evaluation methods. Therefore the research questions are Why and how do organizations evaluate training programs? What further need is there to develop organizations evaluation methods? The conclusion of this study shows that evaluation of the training and development programs are not a high priority among the selected organizations. Although the organizations believe that evaluation on training and development programs may exhibit legitimacy to their customers and improve future training and development programs, the selected organization chooses to focus more on developing and implementing the training programs. This results in difficulties for the organization to comprehend exactly how programs affect the organizations. Therefor proper evaluations methods could help the selected organizations to create more profitable programs.

Student-identified benefits of assigning freshmen to the same course and residence hall

This thesis investigates student-identified benefits of residential learning communities. It is a qualitative study involving matriculates living on campus who participate in Freshman Connections at Ball State University. Past assessment of the program includes faculty, residence hall director, and student surveys investigating their experiences and feedback. The literature reflects creation and implementation of living and learning communities, benefits for students, faculty and universities, and retention outcomes. The researcher used focus groups in the research design and analyzed the data by extracting relevant themes. The findings are discussed within the following themes: student knowledge of the Freshman Connections program; adjustment to Ball State University, and college, academic and interpersonal benefits of learning communities; and relationships among students and faculty. The conclusion includes discussion of how student adjustment to Ball State University and college was affected by assignment of students to the same courses and residence hall. Academic relationships among faculty and students are also explored along with discussion concerning students' overall experience in the Freshman Connections program. Changing words and worlds?: a phenomenological study of the acquisition of an academic literacy

This study is contextualised within the field of post-graduate, continuing teacher education, and the vibrant and demanding policy context that has characterised higher education in post-apartheid South Africa. Situated within a module specifically designed to address what is commonly understood to be the academic literacy development needs of students in the Bachelor of Education Honours programme at the former University of Natal, it aims to unveil the lived experiences of students taking this module. The module, Reading and Writing Academic Texts (RWAT), was developed in direct response to academics’ call that something be done about the ‘problem’ of students’ reading and writing proficiency. As a core, compulsory module, RWAT was informed by Systemic Functional Linguistics and drew on Genre Theory for its conceptual and theoretical framework. It foregrounded the genre of the academic argument as the key academic literacy that was taught. The motivation for this study came from my own increasing concern that the theoretical and conceptual framework we had adopted for the module was emerging as an inherently limiting and formulaic model of literacy, and was resulting in students exiting the module with little or no ‘critical’ perspective on any aspect of literacy as social practice. I was also keen, in a climate of increasing de-personalisation and the massification of education, to reinstate the personal. Thus, I chose to focus on individual lives, and through an exploration of a small group of participants’ ‘lived’ experiences of the RWAT module, ascertain what it is like to acquire an academic literacy. The key research question is, therefore: What is it like to acquire an academic literacy? The secondary research question is: How is this experience influenced by the mode of delivery in which it occurs? For its conceptual and theoretical framing, this study draws on social literacy theory and phenomenology, the latter as both a philosophy and a methodology. However, although the study has drawn significantly on the phenomenological tradition for inspiration and direction, it has not done so uncritically. Thus, the study engages with phenomenology-as-philosophy in great depth before turning to phenomenology-as-methodology, in order to arrive at a point where the methods and procedures applied in it, are justified. The main findings of the study suggest that, despite the RWAT module espousing an ideological model (Street, 1984) of literacy in its learning materials and readings, participants came very much closer to experiencing an autonomous model of literacy (Street, 1984). The data shows that the RWAT module was largely inadequate to the task of inducting participants into the ‘situated practices’ and ‘situated meanings’ of the Discourse of Genre Theory and/or the academy, hence the many ‘lived’ difficulties participants experienced. The data also highlights the ease with which an autonomous model of literacy can come to govern practice and student experience even when curriculum intention is underpinned by an ideological position on literacy as social practice. Finally, the study suggests that the research community in South Africa, characterised as it is by such diversity, would be enriched by more studies derived from phenomenology, and a continuing engagement with phenomenology-as-a-movement in order to both challenge and expand its existing framework.

Analysis of Managerial Training and Development Within Saudi Arabian Airlines

The central theme of this study is to survey and critically examine existing Saudi Arabian Airlines (Saudia) Management Development Programs (MDPs) in order to determine which areas of the current programs must be given priority and greater emphasis at Saudia, as well as to ascertain MDP's effects on managers, staff managers, and supervisors. The purposes of this study are (1) to review and evaluate the progress made in managerial development at Saudia from 1972 to 1977 in terms of objectives and effectiveness, and (2) to explore the development of Saudia's managerial needs. The criteria used in this analysis are based upon managerial effectiveness. Although scattered significant differences appeared in some of the data presented in this study, no specific patterns were found among these differences, and it appeared that MDP could not produce any change in the behavior of those managers, staff managers, and supervisors who participated in it. This was a clear indication that MDP was far from achieving its objectives. Several factors contributed to this result, including misunderstanding of Saudi Arabian culture and circumstances; lack of support from top management; lack of manpower analysis; lack of cooperation, coordination, and communication between the training department and other departments at Saudia; lack of formal plans for management succession; and other reasons related directly to MDP.
