A visual simulation support environment based on a multifaceted conceptual framework

This thesis presents the development of a multifaceted conceptual framework for discrete-event simulation and its implementation within an integrated visual simulation support environment (VSSE). The intertwined research objectives regarding the conceptual framework and the companion VSSE are presented. A literature review of related work is conducted. The core of the thesis describes the conceptual framework (called the DOMINO), the VSSE and each of the tools from its supporting toolset, and the VSMSL (Visual Simulation Model Specification Language). Three example model applications (bus route, traffic intersection, and branch operations examples) demonstrate the use of the VSSE and the underlying DOMINO. The thesis is evaluated using the research objectives as assessment criteria. The DOMINO is truly multifaceted. Both graphical and object-oriented, the DOMINO provides design and implementation guidance over the simulation model life cycle. The DOMINO is not restricted to specific problem domains but is independent of application domain. Several different perspectives for developing model component logic are available to modelers under the VSMSL. The VSSE demonstrates significant advances in integrated, automated support for model development which include graphical facilities for definition and specification and effective verification techniques. The VSSE underscores the contributions of the research effort and has helped to identify potential areas for future research. / Ph. D.

A method for the spatial dynamic simulation of reciprocating compressors using the digital computer

This thesis introduces the application of computer-aided engineering techniques to the dynamic analysis of reciprocating compressor designs. The analysis process is detailed in three steps. The first step, an interactive pre-processor, develops the shaking forces and torques acting on the machine. The second step is a batch processed program that performs a dynamic simulation of the compressor in operation. The compressor and mounting are simulated as a rigid body with six degrees-of-freedom (X, Y, and Z translations and roll, pitch, and yaw) mounted to the ground with up to 25 arbitrarily oriented springs and dampers. Additionally, an eigenanalysis is performed that returns the natural frequencies and modes for the machine. The final step is an interactive postprocessor where the user may examine the results of the eigenanalysis as well as the operating orbit of the machine. A series of programs that implement the analysis process was developed. The specialized formulations for the six coupled, non-linear equations of motion are presented. Color computer graphics and animation are used for visual output displays. The dynamic simulation program is designed to function on many computer systems, from low-cost personal computers to large mainframes, while the pre- and post-processing programs are designed for the personal computer. The programs were tested by comparing the predicted results with those of an Ingersoll-Rand model 242 two piston, two stage, 3 hp compressor. The correlation between the experimental and predicted results show that the programs can accurately simulate the dynamics of a reciprocating compressor operating at steady-state. Typically, the acceleration results agree for the six degrees-of-freedom in both the time and frequency domain to within 8%. / Master of Science

The study seeks to determine the effect upon the F-statistic of violating the assumption of homogeneity of regression slopes in the one-way, fixed-effects analysis of covariance model. The study employs a Monte Carlo simulation technique to vary the degree of heterogeneity of regression slopes with varied sample sizes within experiments to determine the effect of such conditions. One hundred and eighty-three simulations were used.

This thesis describes the simulation of the IBM SYSTEM/7. The research leading to this thesis involved the development of a PL/I computer program that runs on an IBM 360/50 computer and simulates the IBM SYSTEM/7. Various methods of simulation are examined and guidelines for computer simulation of another computer are established. The SYSTEM/7 simulator (SIM/7) is the heart of this thesis. SIM/7 simulates the IBM SYSTEM/7 entirely with software as opposed to an emulator which involves the combined use of hardware and software to perform the simulation process. This thesis contains a general introduction to computer simulation, reason for simulation, a user's guide for SIM/7 and a definition of the SYSTEM/7 processor using the Vienna Definition Language.
