A configuração da informação no contexto da convergência jornalística : uma análise do Nexo

A pesquisa identifica e analisa como o jornal nativo digital Nexo conforma editorial-mente a informação jornalística ao articular seções e temas, potencialidades da web, modalidades, gêneros e formatos jornalísticos. O quadro teórico se constitui com base na abordagem do cenário de convergência jornalística, tendo em vista processos de mu-danças estruturais e inovações. Reflete-se ainda sobre o jornal enquanto dispositivo, debatendo-se sobre as especificidades do ciberjornalismo e da conformação de um ci-berjornal. Os procedimentos metodológicos adotados são a pesquisa bibliográfica, a pesquisa documental e a análise de conteúdo. O corpus de análise é composto por mate-riais coletados entre os dias 11 e 24 de setembro de 2017, com capturas de tela sempre às 23h, em cinco espaços – seções do site, home do site, página do Facebook, newslet-ters e matérias. Os resultados evidenciam uma nova proposta de enquadramento em seções e temas; diferentes abordagens para periodicidade, atualidade, universalidade e publicidade; uma articulação multiplataforma; a exploração de modalidades, formatos e gêneros diversos; o uso de hipertextualidade e memória para construir um jornalismo explicativo; e a utilização de multimidialidade e interatividade como possibilidades de inovação editorial. / The research identifies and analyzes how the digitally native newspaper Nexo editorially conforms its journalistic information by articulating sections and topics, web potentiali-ties, modalities, and journalistic genres and formats. The theoretical framework is based on the approach of journalistic convergence, structural changes and innovation process-es. It also reflects about the newspaper as a device, debating on the specificities of cyberjournalism and the conformation of a cyberjournal. The methodological proce-dures adopted are bibliographic research, documental research and content analysis. The corpus of the analysis is composed of material collected between September 11 and September 24, 2017, capturing the screen always at 11:00 PM, in five areas – the site sections, home page, Facebook page, newsletters and news stories. The results show a new proposal for framing sections and topics; different approaches to periodicity, topi-cality, universality and publicity; a multiplatform articulation; the exploration of diverse modalities, formats and genres; the use of hypertextuality and memory to construct an explanatory journalism; and the use of multimediality and interactivity as possibilities for editorial innovation.

Digitally Modulated Light for Multiple Fluorescence Excitation in Capillary Electrophoresis Detection System

This research has successfully developed a multiple fluorescence detection method for high throughput capillary electrophoresis detection using a digitally-modulated light source and a spectrum detection system. A commercial available LCD (liquid crystal device) projector is adoped to replace the spacially-filttered light source (Hg lamp) in a conventional fluorescence microscopy. The LCD projector can be digitally controlled by a computer to create the three primary colors of RGB (red, green, and blue) for fluorescence excitation in the analytes. The emitted light from the fluorescent samples is then collected using a UV-VIS-NIR spectrometer through a ultimode fiber. Delicate optical components, such as filter wheel or acousto-optic filtering system, for filtering different excitation light sources can be excluded with this simple and novel approach. In addition, the desired wavelength for the excitation light can be selected quickly and smoothly without vibration problems come with the mechanical optical components. Three fluorescent dyes (Atto 647N, Rhodamine B, Fluorescein) with different excitation and emission wavelength has been used to demonstrate the proposed digitally-modulated light source system for high throughput CE system. The optimal operation conditions for obtaining best detection signal-to-noise ratio for different fluorescence dyes are firstly determined. In addition, the current study proposes a mixed-color light (visually in purple) composed of two specific primary lights (red and blue) to simultaneously excite a mixed sample composed of two fluorescent dyes (Atto 647N and FITC). Separation and detection of the mixed fluoresce samples using a single excitation illumination using the proposed digital-modulated CE system is successfully demonstrated. Finally, a single-strand DNA biosample is used to confirmed the proposed system is feasible of adopting in the bio-analytical applications. The technique proposed in this study has shown its potential to be a high throughput CE detection system.

Mmic Vector Modulator Design

In this thesis the design of a MMIC vector modulator operating in 9GHz-10GHz band is investigated and performed. Sub-sections of the vector modulator are 4-port (4.8dB) 1200 phase shift relative to the dedicated port power splitter, digitally controlled variable gain amplifier and the in phase power combiner. Alternative methods are searched in order to implement the structure properly in the given frequency band. The final design is appropriate for MMIC structure. 4-port (4.8dB) 1200 phase shift relative to the dedicated port power splitter is studied. The performance is simulated and optimized first on Microwave Office, then on Advanced Design System (ADS) tools. Various methods to design a digitally controlled variable gain amplifier are studied. The final topology is simulated and optimized on ADS tool. An in phase power combiner is designed. The performance of the combiner is simulated and optimized on ADS tool. Lumped element models are replaced with CASWELL H-40 models to achieve a MMIC structure and a layout is drawn. The finalized vector modulator is simulated and optimized on ADS tool. Techno-historical limits of the interface: the performance of interactive narrative experiences

This thesis takes the position that current analyses of digitally mediated interactive experiences that include narrative elements often lack adequate consideration of the technical and historical contexts of their production. / From this position, this thesis asks the question: how is the reader/player/user's participation in interactive narrative experiences (such as hypertext fiction, interactive fiction, computer games, and electronic art) influenced by the technical and historical limitations of the interface? / In order to investigate this question, this thesis develops a single methodology from relevant media and narrative theory, in order to facilitate a comparative analysis of well known exemplars from distinct categories of digitally mediated experiences. These exemplars are the interactive fiction Adventure, the interactive art work Osmose, the hypertext fiction Afternoon, a story, and the computer/video games Myst, Doom, Half Life and Everquest. / The main argument of this thesis is that the technical limits of new media experiences cause significant ‘gaps’ in the reader’s experience of them, and that the cause of these gaps is the lack of a dedicated technology for new media, which instead ‘borrows’ technology from other fields. These gaps are overcome by a greater dependence upon the reader’s cognitive abilities than other media forms. This greater dependence can be described as a ‘performance’ by the reader/player/user, utilising Eco’s definition of an ‘open’ work (Eco 21). / This thesis further argues that the ‘mimetic’ and ‘immersive’ ambitions of current new media practice can increases these gaps, rather than overcoming them. The thesis also presents the case that these ‘gaps’ are often not caused by technical limits in the present, but are oversights by the author/designers that have arisen as the product of a craft culture that has been subject to significant technical limitations in the past. Compromises that originally existed to overcome technical limits have become conventions of the reader/player/user’s interactive literacy, even though these conventions impinge on the experience, and are no longer necessary because of subsequent technical advances. As a result, current new media users and designers now think of these limitations as natural. / This thesis concludes the argument by redefining ‘immersion’ as the investment the reader makes to overcome the gaps in an experience, and suggests that this investment is an important aspect of their performance of the work.

Object Recognition Using Digitally Generated Images as Training Data

Object recognition is a much studied computer vision problem, where the task is to find a given object in an image. This Master Thesis aims at doing a MATLAB implementation of an object recognition algorithm that finds three kinds of objects in images: electrical outlets, light switches and wall mounted air-conditioning controls. Visually, these three objects are quite similar and the aim is to be able to locate these objects in an image, as well as being able to distinguish them from one another. The object recognition was accomplished using Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG). During the training phase, the program was trained with images of the objects to be located, as well as reference images which did not contain the objects. A Support Vector Machine (SVM) was used in the classification phase. The performance was measured for two different setups, one where the training data consisted of photos and one where the training data consisted of digitally generated images created using a 3D modeling software, in addition to the photos. The results show that using digitally generated images as training images didn’t improve the accuracy in this case. The reason for this is probably that there is too little intraclass variability in the gradients in digitally generated images, they’re too synthetic in a sense, which makes them poor at reflecting reality for this specific approach. The result might have been different if a higher number of digitally generated images had been used.

The use of gamified learning experiences to drive reskilling

Before the start of the industrial revolution the workplace has been ever changing with introduction of technologies. With the adoption of automation and artificial intelligence this marks an acceleration shift compared to the past. Where the need for technological, social, and emotional skills will rise while demands for physical and manual skills will fall. Investments in retraining the workforce to close the potential skills gap related to automation and digitalization is getting an increased business priority. The preferred ways of learning have changed over the last few years, stepped outside of the classic classroom trainings into the rapidly growing of online tools. The aim of this thesis is to know whether gamification can support reskilling of people, through the use of a digitally gamified learning experience. Through a qualitative research approach with semi-structured interviews this thesis found that digitally gamified learning experience increases the will to learn new skills. It also showed that using a digitally gamified learning experience the time spent on task increased when learning a new skill.

Test-Retest Reliability in the Determination of the Speech Recognition Threshold

For many years, speech recognition threshold (SRT) testing has been used as an indicator of audiologic health. However, with changing methods and technology, test-retest reliability has not been reviewed extensively with newer digitally recorded spondaic words which meet a published criterion of listener familiarity. This study examined the test-retest reliability of 33 high frequency usage and psychometrically equated spondaic words. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association recommended method (2-dB decrements) was used to measure the left and right SRT of 40 participants using both male and female talker recordings. For each participant, four SRTs were found during the test condition and four SRTs were found during the retest condition. All of the SRT scores were analyzed and the averaged SRT values found using a male talker recording resulted in an average retest SRT to be 1.4 dB better than the average test SRT. The averaged SRT values found using a female talker recording resulted in an averaged retest SRT to be 1.2 dB better than the averaged test SRT. The SRT scores also showed high validity when compared to each participant's pure tone average (PTA). This study additionally found no significant interaction in using a male versus a female talker when using digitally recorded and psychometrically equated spondaic words.

System Modeling of Next Generation Digitally Modulated Automotive RADAR (DMR)

abstract: State-of-the-art automotive radars use multi-chip Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radars to sense the environment around the car. FMCW radars are prone to interference as they operate over a narrow baseband bandwidth and use similar radio frequency (RF) chirps among them. Phase Modulated Continuous Wave radars (PMCW) are robust and insensitive to interference as they transmit signals over a wider bandwidth using spread spectrum technique. As more and more cars are equipped with FMCW radars illuminate the same environment, interference would soon become a serious issue. PMCW radars can be an effective solution to interference in the noisy FMCW radar environment. PMCW radars can be implemented in silicon as System-on-a-chip (SoC), suitable for Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) implementation and is highly programmable. PMCW radars do not require highly linear high frequency chirping oscillators thus reducing the size of the final solution. This thesis aims to present a behavior model for this promising Digitally modulated radar (DMR) transceiver in Simulink/Matlab. The goal of this work is to create a model for the electronic system level framework that simulates the entire system with non-idealities. This model includes a Top Down Design methodology to understand the requirements of the individual modules’ performance and thus derive the specifications for implementing the real chip. Back annotation of the actual electrical modules’ performance to the model closes the design process loop. Using Simulink’s toolboxes, a passband and equivalent baseband model of the system is built for the transceiver with non-idealities of the components built in along with signal processing routines in Matlab.
