“Gendered digits: A Marketing Opportunity”

The following thesis explores a topic mixing different themes. In fact, the researchersexplore the gender affiliated of digits. Following a consistent structure, the aim of theresearch is to show, or not, a gendered affiliation of digits in the marketing field. Underthe assumption that digits have gendered affiliation through cognitive interpretation, thisresearch could take an important place in the naming process of products or brands. Inorder to test the relation between genders and digits, the researchers explore differentgendered dimensions as forms, pronunciation, colors, odd and even digits, etc. Throughqualitative analysis, the researchers try to find a potential relationship between these thetwo main themes: gender and digits. Moreover, in the case where a link is proved, anothertheme will be explained: marketing. Indeed, marketing departments could haveopportunities to target gendered segments through specific numbers. Different researcheshave been done on this topic. However, the researchers still consider the topic like a topicwithout many explorations. In fact, Wilkie and Bodenhausen (2012, 2015) have shown alink between gender and odd versus even numbers with a quantitative research. On thecontrary, this research explores several dimensions through a qualitative exploration.

Recently, researchers have attempted to increase the time efficiency of the smartphone DIN test by decreasing the number of presentations of the DIN. One suggestion was to use a variable step size based on the correctness of digits identified within the triplet. In contrast, another suggested using a fixed signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) presentation level for all presentations of the DIN test and producing a pass/fail result based on whether a 95% recognition level was reached. First Significant Digits and the Credit Derivative Market during the Financial Crisis

In this letter we discuss the Credit Default Swap (CDS) market for European, Indian and US CDS entities during the financial crisis starting in 2007 using empirical First Significant Digit (FSD) distributions. We find out that on a time aggregated level the European and the US market obey empirical FSD distributions similar to the theoretical ones. Surprising differences are observed in the development of the FSD distributions between the US and the European market. While the FSD distribution of the US derivative market behaves nearly constant during the last financial crisis, we find huge fluctuations in the FSD distributions in the European market. One reason for these differences might be the possibility of a strategic default for US companies due to Chapter 11 and avoided contagion effects. / Series: Research Report Series / Department of Statistics and Mathematics

Reliability of digits-in-noise test using different digital devices, transducers and sound file types

Objective: This study evaluated the reliability of the digits-in-noise (DIN) test application across various low and high-end digital devices utilizing different transducers and sound file types. Design: The study utilized a cross-sectional within-subject design. Methods: The study consisted of two objectives. In the first objective, 40 normal hearing participants aged between 18 to 24 years (mean: 20; SD= 1.9) were recruited. Speech Reception Thresholds (SRTs) across Android smartphones (one low-end and one high-end smartphone), as well as an Android tablet coupled with different transducers (headphones and earphones) were compared. For the second objective, participants comprised of 12 normal-hearing females aged between 23 to 24 years (mean: 23, SD= 0.5). SRTs were compared across three different sound file types (OGG file, AAC file and MP3 file). Results: There was no significant difference in the SRTs between electronic devices or transducers used (p< 0.05). Furthermore, between the different sound files used, the difference was also not significant (p< 0.05). Conclusions: The DIN test is reliable when conducted across different electronic devices, regardless of the transducer or sound file type used. Este trabalho tem como objetivo principal o estudo da expansão decimal dos números reais. Primeiramente provamos que todo número real possui ao menos uma expansão decimal. Na sequência, um método para encontrar a expansão decimal de um número entre 0 e 1 é apresentado, bem como um estudo sobre a expansão decimal de números racionais e irracionais. Em seguida, o estudo apresenta métodos que permitem encontrar aproximações racionais de números irracionais, além dos erros cometidos por essas aproximações. Na parte final, por seu turno, o foco do trabalho recai sobre a análise da regularidade (frequência) dos dígitos das expansões decimais. / This work has as main objective the study of the decimal expansion of the real numbers. First we prove that every real number has at least one decimal expansion. Further, a method to find the decimal expansion of real numbers between 0 and 1 is provided as well as a the study of the decimal expansion of rational and irrational numbers. Next, the study presents methods that provide rational approximations to irrational numbers, in addition to the errors committed by these approximations. At the end, by its turn, the focus of the work is put on the analysis of the regularity (frequency) of the digits of the decimal expansion.
