Profiling Psychopathology in a Unique Population Chronically Ill Adults: A Dimensional Approach

Samantha Ingram (6622583) 10 June 2019 (has links)
The internalizing and externalizing dimensions of psychopathology have been shown to effectively identify groups that are at higher risk for experiencing certain forms of psychopathology. Many studies have shown that chronic physical health conditions are a risk factor for psychological distress, yet there has been very little research examining the association between chronic physical health conditions and dimensional models of psychopathology to date. In the present study we examined the factor structure of internalizing and externalizing symptoms in a sample of adults with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS; n =172) and in a sample of adults without any chronic illness diagnoses (n = 199). Confirmatory factor analyses suggested that psychological distress in individuals with POTS can be effectively characterized by an internalizing dimension composed of distress and fear subcomponents as well as an externalizing dimension. Tests of measurement invariance allowed for the examination of latent means, which showed that individuals with POTS tend to have higher scores on the internalizing dimension and lower scores on the externalizing dimension than healthy controls. Regression analyses suggested that within the sample of people with POTS, those who were more accepting of their illness and had higher health related quality of life tended to have lower scores on the internalizing dimension. Findings suggest that individuals with POTS are at heightened risk for experiencing internalizing symptoms of psychopathology. A dimensional conceptualization of psychopathology seems like an effective way to identify symptoms of psychopathology that are separate from symptoms of autonomic nervous system dysfunction.

Numerical modeling and inversion of geophysical electromagnetic measurements using a thin plate model

Pirttijärvi, M. (Markku) 08 November 2003 (has links)
Abstract The thesis deals with numerical methods designed for the modeling and inversion of geophysical electromagnetic (EM) measurements using a conductive thin plate model. The main objectives are to study the EM induction problem in general and to develop practical interpretation tools for mineral prospecting in particular. The starting point is a linearized inversion method based on the singular value decomposition and a new adaptive damping method. The inversion method is introduced to the interpretation of time-domain EM (TEM) measurements using a thin plate in free-space. The central part of the thesis is a new approximate modeling method, which is based on an integral equation approach and a special lattice model. At first the modeling method is applied to the interpretation of frequency-domain EM (FEM) data using a thin plate in conductive two-layered earth. After this time-domain responses are modeled applying a Fourier-sine transform of broadband FEM computations. The results demonstrate that the approximate computational method can model the geophysical frequency and time-domain EM responses of a thin conductor in conductive host medium with sufficient accuracy, and that the inversion method can provide reliable estimates for the model parameters. The fast forward computation enables interactive interpretation of FEM data and feasible forward modeling of TEM responses. The misfit function mapping and analysis of the singular value decomposition have provided additional information about the sensitivity, resolution, and the correlation behavior of the thin plate parameters.

Evaluating Ecological Influences of Altered Flow Regimes Using Two- and Three-Dimensional Hydrodynamic Models

Shen, Yi 30 September 2009 (has links)
Reservoir releases for generating power need to be reconciled with efforts to maintain healthy ecosystems in regulated rivers having irregular channel topography. Fluctuating, complex flow patterns near river obstructions such as boulders and large woody debris provide unique habitat for many aquatic organisms. Numerical modeling of the flow structures surrounding these obstructions is challenging, yet it represents an important tool for aquatic habitat assessment. Moreover, efforts for modeling the morphologically and biologically important transient flows, as well as quantifying their impacts on physical fish habitat during the unsteady-flow period remain rare. In this dissertation, the ability of two- (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) hydraulic models to reproduce the localized complex flow features at steady base and peak flows is examined first. The performance of the two hydraulic models is evaluated by comparing the numerical results with measurements of flow around a laboratory hemisphere and boulders located at a reach of the Smith River in Virginia. Close agreement between measured values and the velocity profiles predicted by the two models is obtained outside the wakes behind these obstructions. However, results suggest that in the vicinity of theses obstructions the 3-D model is better suited for reproducing the circulation flow behavior favored by many aquatic species over a broad range of flows. Further, time-dependent flow features affecting channel morphology and aquatic physical habitat are investigated using the numerical models for the same reach in the Smith River. Temporal variation measurements of water surface elevation and velocity profile obtained in the field during a reservoir release are in good agreement with the numerical results. A hypothetical "staggering" flow release scenario simulated by the 3-D model leads to reduced erosional area and longer refugia availability for juvenile brown trout during hydropeaking. Finally, an unsteadiness parameter β is proposed for determining whether an unsteady flow regime can be either modeled using a truly dynamic flow approach or a quasi-steady flow method. / Ph. D.

Estudo sobre a história dos modelos arquitetônicos na antigüidade: origens e características das primeiras maquetes de arquiteto / Study on the history of architectural models in antiquity: origins and characteristics of the first architects models.

Rozestraten, Artur Simões 15 August 2003 (has links)
II d.C.). / This study intends to identify the first architects models among the several architectural models already known and presented in literature. Architects models are third-dimensional objects directly related to knowledge, planning and communication of architectural matters. Recession to Antiquity seems necessary in order to study the origins of the relation between three-dimensional model and architects work in the western world. Chronologically this study begins at 6.000 b.C. and ends at the Roman world (c. 200 a.D.). In geographical terms this study focuses objects produced by Neolithic Southeastern European cultures, Near Eastern cultures, Egyptian culture, Aegean cultures (Cretan and Cycladic), Cypriot, Greek, Villanovian and Roman cultures. Material evidences for architects models are rare and inaccurate all over Antiquity. Nevertheless some few objects are very close to architects work deserving deeper future studies: the miniature brick ensemble from Tepe Gawra (c. 3.500 a.C.); the Egyptian Dahshours model (1.990-1.730 a.C.); the minoan model of Arkhanes (1.700-1.630 a.C.) and the Roman models of Ostia (I a.C.), Niha, Baalbek and Villa Adriana (II d.C.).

Rotelli, Vanderlei 24 May 2017 (has links)
Visualization of Three-Dimensional Models from Multiple Texel Images Created from Fused Ladar/Digital Imagery

Killpack, Cody C. 01 May 2016 (has links)
The ability to create three-dimensional (3D) images offers a wide variety of solutions to meet ever increasing consumer demands. As popularity for 3D cinema and television continues to grow, 3D images will remain an important area of research and development. While there are a variety of ways to create a 3D model, textel images are quickly become the preferred solution that has been captured with a texel camera. The combination of multiple texel images taken around a scene can be used to form a texel model. Offering both visual and dimensional accuracy, texel models are becoming invaluable tools for disaster management, situational awareness, and even military application. However, displaying a texel model often provides challenges, and the problems that arise when viewing texel models will be discussed and corrected in this paper.
