The author and the shepherd : the paratextual self-representations of James Hogg (1807-1835)

O'Donnell, Stuart January 2012 (has links)
The Author and the Shepherd: The Paratextual Self-Representations of James Hogg (1807-1835) This project establishes a literary-cultural trajectory in the career of Scottish poet and author James Hogg (1770-1835) through the close reading of his self-representational paratextual material. It argues that these paratexts played an integral part in Hogg’s writing career and, as such, should be considered among his most important works. Previous critics have drawn attention to Hogg’s paratextual self-representations; this project, however, singles them out for comprehensive analysis as literary texts in their own right, comparing and contrasting how Hogg’s use of such material differed from other writers of his period, as well as how his use of it changed and developed as his career progressed. Their wider cultural significance is also considered. Hogg not only used paratextual material to position himself strategically in his literary world but also to question, challenge and undermine some of the dominant socio-cultural paradigms and hierarchies of the early-nineteenth century, not least the role and position of ‘peasant poets’ (such as himself) in society. Hogg utilised self-representational paratextual material throughout his literary career. Unlike other major writers of the period Hogg, a self-taught shepherd, had to justify and explain his position in society as ‘an author’ through these pseudo-autobiographical paratexts, which he attached to most of his works (in such forms as memoirs, introductions, dedications, notes and footnotes, and introductory paragraphs to stories). Via these liminal devices he created and propagated his authorial persona of ‘The Ettrick Shepherd’, whose main function was to draw attention to Hogg’s preeminent place in the traditional world, and to his status as a ‘peasant poet’. It was on the basis of this position that he argued for his place in the Scottish literary world of the early-nineteenth century and, ultimately, in literary history. His paratextual self-representations are thus a crucial element in his literary career. Drawing on Gerard Genette’s description of ‘the paratext’, the authorial theories of Roland Barthes and Michel Foucault (along with more recent authorial criticism), as well as autobiographical theory, this project traces Hogg’s changing use of self-representational paratexts throughout his career, from his first major work The Mountain Bard (1807) to his final book of stories Tales of the Wars of Montrose (1835). By reading Hogg’s paratexts closely, this project presents a unique view – from the inside out – of the specific literary world into which Hogg attempted to position himself as an author.

Samuel Lira de Oliveira 14 February 2011 (has links)
Os estudos sobre a intertextualidade de Bazerman (2007), Machado(1995), Beth Brait (1997) e Blikstein (2000) cujas tônicas é a presença efetiva de um texto em outro / The current research stems from the authors didactic pedagogic experiences and his Língua Portuguesa and Literatura Brasileira classes concerning the intertextual and dialogical field since such professional experiences have excited his interested when he noticed excerpts from the Holy Bible in passages of the Pernambucano writer Gilvan Lemos novels. The knowledge of the Backhtinian theory about spoken of others person has also proportioned the motivation to his study intertextuality and dialoguecity make up relations which establish themselves between some characters and passages in Gilvan Lemos ―O Anjo do Quarto Dia (1981)‖. Ana, Codó, Tininha, Piranha, (characters in the book) are related to some characters in the Holy Bible: Jesus Christ, Mary, mother to Jesus, and Mary Magdalene (New Testament) and Job (Old Testament). In this sense the novel is conceived as a linguistic phenomenon. The aim is to do a study from the discursive and linguistic elements of the religious and literary domains as well as the lexicon relations and their association with the intertextuality which have been created around these words. The core of this research is to analyze the linguistic construction in a literary work. The religious and literary elements are present as a support to the linguistic study. Therefore, the literary work is taken as a linguistic phenomenon as well as the non literary statement (in the sense of ―belles lettrers‖). A reflection will be made on the Backtinian (1981/1997/2002/2003) dialogism in order to analyze passages in the book ― O Anjo do Quarto Dia‖. Analysis point out that some lexicon relations being constructed in the book, around key terms on the intertextuality , point at distinct speeches about how the biblical intertextuality is worked up in Gilvan Lemos works. In order to excite the study about intertextuality in the present research, some conceptions will be inserted from Julia Kristevas reflections (1974). The following books from the Holy Bible will be sources of research: from the Old Testament: Genesis, Exodus, Deuteronomy, 1 Samuel, 1 Kings, Job, Psalms, Ecclesiastes, Salomons The song of songs, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, Jonah, Habakkuk; from the New Testament ; Mathew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts, Romans, 1st Corinthians, Galatians, Colossians, 1st Timothy, Hebrews, Revelations; as well as Bazermans (2007), Machado (1995), Beth Brait (1997) and Blicksteins (2000) studies about intertextuality whose emphasis is the effective presence of a text within another text

"Afinal de contas, que é um gaúcho?" : Erico Verissimo e as identidades regionais do Rio Grande do Sul

Marcon, Daniele 14 August 2015 (has links)
Submitted by Ana Guimarães Pereira (agpereir@ucs.br) on 2015-11-18T13:23:12Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Daniele Marcon.pdf: 3412082 bytes, checksum: 3d0faedec356fc73b14dd009109b1455 (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2015-11-18T13:23:12Z (GMT). The objective of this analysis is to outline the conception of the writer about the regional identities present in the southern state, trying to answer the question: “what is a gaúcho?”. Therefore, this research is based, largely, in the non-fictional writings of the novelist, as his interviews, letters, essays, memories and other statements of this nature. Besides, this analysis verifies some books and characters of the writer, because it is understood that also in the fiction the thought of Erico Verissimo is represented, mainly the aspects concerned to the question of the identities. Along the way, it is also discussed categories like memory, region, regionality, regionalism, (regional) identity and homeland.

The research seeks to establish points of contact between Theology, Linguistics and Religions Sciences. In the light of discourse analysis and by means of a bibliographical research in order to understand who was Paul his education in Tarsus, his personality, his training in Jerusalem, his life as Pharisee - , it is intended to assimilate the reasons which led the apostle to adopt a so peculiar and emphatic style than the other New Testament authors. Moreover, it is presented a new taxonomy for the four expressions categories analyzed, i. e., epauxesis, hyperthesis, hyperbole, and hyperoche. Such expressions were taken as subcategories of a figure of speech that we are calling hyperbolism. The paper is divided in three chapters: in the first one, it is discussed the intensity of the Pauline discourse based on the occurrence of compound verbs and adverbs of intensity; in the second, it is discussed the notion of emotionality in the Pauline discourse from the occurrence of hyperboles and self-exaltation expressions; in the third, it is sought to explain the reasons which led Paul to adopt an emphatic style. For now, it is concluded that it is not possible explain the frequent use of hyperbolism, along the homologoumena, in just one way.

The construction of gender through the narrative process of the African folktale: a case study of the Maragoli folktale

Kabaji, Egara Stanley 30 November 2005 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to identify the gender-related themes from a cultural discourse in order to determine how gender is constructed in African society. The study specifically examines the Maragoli Folktale. The Maragoli people mainly inhabit the western part of Kenya and are a sub-tribe of the larger Luhyia community. The Luhyia community is the second largest community in Kenya. The study attempts to uncover how gender is constructed through the examination of dominant themes, characterization, images, symbols, formulaic patterns and formalities of composition and performance in the Maragoli folktales at the time of performance. Based on an eclectic conceptual framework, the study takes into consideration gender theories, feminist literary perspectives, psychoanalysis and discourse analysis paradigms to critically examine the tales as a semiotic system of signification grounded within an African social cultural milieu. The folktales are analysed as a symbolic and ideological discourse of signs encoded by the performer and decoded by the audience at the time of performance. The study therefore situates the tale firmly at the time of performance, taking into consideration the interaction between the performer and the audience in the dissemination and internalization of gender ideology. While establishing that patriarchal structures and values are transmitted through the tales, the study also reveals the methods and interventions that the mainly female performers advance as active agents in their struggle for space within the culture. Women are, therefore, perceived as active agents of change and the folktale as a site from which gender ideology is discussed, contested and subverted. The study is based on a corpus of twenty (20) folktales collected from the Maragoli country in Western Province of Kenya (See maps, Appendix B.) The English versions of the tales appear in appendix A. / English Studies / D. Litt. et Phil. (English)
