The prevalence of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis in England and Catalonia from the Roman to the post-medieval periodsNavarro, L.C., Buckberry, Jo 14 March 2022 (has links)
Yes / Objective: Evaluate the prevalence of DISH through time from the Roman to the post-Medieval period in England
and Catalonia.
Material: 281 individuals from England and 247 from Catalonia were analyzed.
Methods: Adult individuals with at least three well-preserved lower thoracic vertebral bodies were analyzed. DISH
was assessed considering the early stages of development. Diachronic and geographical dietary shifts were
investigated using reported light isotope data, archaeological reports and historical documentation.
Results: Males and older individuals showed consistently higher prevalence of DISH, however, only the English
sample showed a significant difference between males and females in the prevalence of DISH. No significant
difference was found in the prevalence of DISH though time (from Roman to post medieval periods) nor across
regions (England and Catalonia).
Conclusion: The development of DISH is probably influenced by a combination of factors including increasing age
and sex.
Significance: This is the first exhaustive analysis of DISH in ancient Catalan populations and the first that considers the early stages of DISH.
Limitations: Reduced sample size, particularly in post-medieval samples, as a result of the available excavated
samples and the inclusion criteria adopted.
Future Research: Include rural, religious and high-status samples in the analysis of DISH. Re-assess the prevalence
of DISH in post-medieval populations. / This project was funded by an Institute of Life Sciences Research Studentship awarded by the University of Bradford, Bradford, UK.

The development of a transit radio telescope at the hydrogen line frequencyPillay, Aritha 13 June 2014 (has links)
Submitted in fulfillment of the academic requirements for the Master’s Degree of Technology: Electrical Engineering – Light Current, Durban University of Technology, 2012. / The development of a transit radio telescope at the hydrogen line frequency of 1420 MHz is described. The telescope antenna uses a 5 m diameter parabolic reflector with an estimated efficiency of 50 % and an F/D ratio of 0.5. The gain of the antenna at 1420 MHz (wavelength of 21.1 cm) is approximately 35 dB with a beamwidth of approximately 3°. The antenna is mounted on a concrete beam at the first floor level, running between two 5 floor tower blocks on the Steve Biko campus of the Durban University of Technology. The majority of the components of the radio telescope antenna and receiver were designed and manufactured at the Durban University of Technology by students of the Departments of Mechanical and Electronic Engineering. The measured sensitivity of the receiver is approximately -94 dBm with a bandwidth of approximately 80 MHz.
Radio sources successfully detected by the radio telescope include the Sun, the Moon, Sagittarius A, Centaurus A and Vela X.

Efficient numerical analysis of focal plane antennas for the SKA and the MeerKATLudick, Daniel Jacobus 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng (Electrical and Electronic Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The use of Focal Plane Arrays (FPAs) as suitable feed-structures for the Parabolic Dish Reflector
antennas that are intended to form a large part of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is
currently the topic of conversation in various SKA research groups. The simulation of these
structures however, relies on intensive computational resources, which can result in very long
simulation runtimes - a serious problem for antenna designers. It was the purpose of the research
to investigate efficient simulation techniques, based on the Method of Moments (MoM).
In this thesis, the reader will be introduced to ways of improving FPA design by using resources
such as High Performance Clusters, developing efficient MoM formulations for FPAs such as
the Vivaldi antenna array and by developing efficient solution techniques for the resulting MoM
equations by using techniques such as the Characteristic Basis Function Method (CBFM). In
addition to the above mentioned methods, the concept of distributed computing is explored as
a way to further aid the antenna designer in obtaining desired results in a reasonable time and
with sufficient accuracy.

DISH - archeologické doklady a frekvence v současné populaci. / DISH - archeological evidence and frequencies in the present population.Peigerová, Kateřina January 2012 (has links)
The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of adult disability caused by Forestier disease among skeletal material in monastic burial grounds and to compare it with the frequency of the lay cemeteries. Five cemeteries of the High Middle Ages to the early modern period, were divided into groups according to age and sex. Also, we evaluated the radiographs, investigated the frequency of adult disability caused by Forestier disease in the population. It was found that the disease in skeletal and X-ray material occurred more frequently among men than women, and did not occure until the age of 40. Furthermore, we found that the higher occurence was among monastic funerals. And since there is an increase Forestier disease in the present population. The question is, whether the external conditions, hence increasing obesity in the population, have an impact on the occurrence of Forestier disease.

The estimation of body mass from human skeletal remainsSt. George, Karen R. Bottenfield 08 April 2016 (has links)
The ability to estimate body mass from human skeletal remains with a high degree of accuracy would be significant for the identification of identifying unknown individuals in a forensic anthropology context, documenting secular change in modern populations, and evaluating any prevalence in prehistoric populations. Modern research investigating body mass incorporates one of two models: morphometric and biomechanical. The morphometric model views the body as a cylinder, where weight estimates are gathered from extreme points such as the breadth of the pelvis. In contrast, the biomechanical model incorporates engineering principles and biology to understand the effects of mass on the human skeleton. Only the biomechanical model can accommodate extremes in body mass, such as those exhibited by modern populations.
This study examined the accuracy of estimating body mass (obesity in particular) from human skeletal remains using a suite of traits shown to be significant in previous studies, including documented biomechanical analysis of obese individuals involving gait and sit-to-stand (STS) movements. It was hypothesized that using a combination of methods, body mass could be estimated with a high degree of accuracy. Using a large skeletal sample (n = 191), composed of male and females with documented age, weight, and height, the following three variables were examined: (1) the spinal manifestation of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH), (2) osteoarthritis (OA) of the tibiae, and (3) external femoral dimensions. These were then subject to statistical tests.
Spearman's rank-order correlation and Mann-Whitney U tests showed significant relationships between DISH and obesity in females (p<.05), but not for males. The presence and severity of OA of the medial condyles were also significantly related to BMI in females (p<.05). In males, the relationship between BMI and OA was only significant on the condyles of the right tibiae (p<.05). Finally, ANOVA and Pearson's product-moment correlation tests were performed to evaluate the cross-sectional dimensions of the femur. The effect of age, stature, and BMI were also examined. ANOVA results showed a significant effect between BMI and M-L cross-sectional dimensions among both sexes (p<.05). Initial Pearson's tests performed separately on males and females showed no significant correlations; however, after the sexes were pooled, small to moderate negative correlations between the M-L/A-P ratio along the diaphysis of the femur and BMI were found. Finally, multiple regression analyses were performed. The models for both sexes with all ten variables was statistically significant for BMI. The final accuracy rate was 78.48% for females and 84.37% for males.
The primary goal of this study was to evaluate Moore's (2008) body mass estimation study. In this investigation, however, all dimensions of the femur were performed using an osteometric board and sliding calipers following the guidelines used by Agostini and Ross (2011). The results of this study paralleled many of the observations seen in previous studies, particularly the M-L lateral widening of the femur. Future research should continue to examine the relationship of DISH and OA with body mass, particularly regarding the varying manifestations between the sexes and confounding factors such as age.
