Ekokritická analýza korporátního diskurzu o životním prostředí / Ecocritical discourse analysis of corporate environmental reports

Novák, Vladimír January 2019 (has links)
This thesis investigates corporate environmental discourse by focusing on the language of corporate environmental reports. It seeks to find out more about how corporations talk about environmental problems and how they position themselves in relation to these. The theoretical underpinning draws from ecolinguistics, specifically ecocritical discourse analysis, which critically evaluates discourses on the environment. Environmental reports published by the company Toyota are analysed through corpus linguistic techniques which help to identify the salient concepts and then further scrutinize their textual environment to uncover the dominant discourse patterns. The analysis reveals that the aim of the reports is portray Toyota as a company which actively protects the environment, which confirms the PR nature of the reports. As a result, negative information or data are downplayed and the company distances itself from these by obliterating its role (through devices such as nominalisation, passive voice or intransitive verbs). Ecological problems as such are addressed rarely and serve more as a background for the company to improve its public image. If they occur in the reports, the link between the problems and human activity is not explicitly stated. The ecological problems are also discussed as...

Reprezentace homosexuality v americkém sitcomu na příkladu Will a Grace a Taková moderní rodinka / Representation of Homosexuality in American Sitcom, as exemplified by Will & Grace and Modern Family

Hofmanová, Zuzana January 2017 (has links)
The diploma theses "Representation of Homosexuality in American Sitcom, as exemplified by Will & Grace and Modern Family" examines the portrayal of minority groups on television. Initially vilified as perverts and abominations, homosexual individuals are now seen as complex characters that buck older stigmatization and stereotypes. These changes can be exemplified and documented across different popular genres currently on television. However, a sitcom is a genre defined by specific rules. Thanks to its simple, recognizable formula, a sitcom is easily adaptable abroad. It has the ability to quickly respond to current social issues. It is also defined by a specific relationship with humor which largely consists of generalizations and simplifications. In sitcoms, stereotyping is readily applied to all minority groups, homosexuals being no exception. Considering the recent development in the representation of homosexuality on television, the question is: how does the conversation about homosexuality transfer to the sitcom? Does the change in conversation go hand-in-hand with changing the existing stereotypes that are specific to the genre? How does contemporary context affect the representation of homosexuality in sitcoms? This thesis aims to answer these questions by analyzing two sitcoms: Will &...

Imigranti a imigrantky v České republice, diskurzivní analýza obrazu cizích / Immigrants in the Czech Republic, discourse analysis of their images

Seidlová, Jana January 2011 (has links)
The work aims to describe field of discourses, where the texts and talks about immigration (more concretely about immigrants in the Czech Republic) are created. The theoretical part describes the notions of nation and identity; it also provides a brief description of the explanatory models of migration and describes the universalism and particularism dichotomy in the immigration policies. Moreover it elaborates a concept of the multiculturalism as a discourse and construction. The concept of discourse is firstly explained in broader theoretical context, with reference to issues of language, power and ideology; secondly in its methodological consequences. Author also gives an account of linguistic tools (modality), and concepts of related sciences (binary opposition, ideological square). The analytical approach is based in the frame of the Critical discourse analysis. An important conclusion is the revelation of the risk as a discourse which legitimates the power and dominancy over immigrants. According different strategies regarding the risks' construction, three main categories in the field of discourse was considered: opportunity, ambivalence and threat. For the further study the author recommends to investigate the field of key actors who has a power to create and shape the discourses in this field.

Současné výzvy izraelské bezpečnosti v kontextu sekuritizace hrozby Íránu / Israel's current security challenges in the context of the securitization of the Iranian threat

Skála, Jáchym January 2021 (has links)
This thesis examines the process of securitization in the relationship between Israel and Iran during Benjamin Netanyahu's second term as Israeli Prime Minister, specifically the period between taking office in 2009 and the conclusion of the nuclear deal with Iran in 2015. The aim of the paper is to analyse the process by which Netanyahu has made Iran such a major security threat that the whole world should be concerned about it. The thesis examines the international dimension of this issue, that is, Netanyahu's speeches that were targeted at an international audience, in some cases especially at an American one, since the United States has been Israel's closest ally since the creation of the State of Israel. The thesis is divided into a theoretical part, which focuses mainly on the theory of securitization, on which the entire work is based, and an empirical part, i.e. the actual analysis of the speeches transcribed into textual form. The greatest emphasis in this analysis is placed on the linguistic devices used, the choice of words and the setting of facts, events or actions in the context chosen by Netanyahu. The analysis of these speeches is intended to reveal the way in which Netanyahu wanted to make Iran a literal existential threat not only to Israel, but ultimately to the whole world,...

Česká politika rozvojové spolupráce a soukromý sektor: klíčové diskurzy od roku 1995 po současnost / Czech Development Cooperation Policy and the Private Sector: Key Discourses between 1995 and Today

Křížková, Eva January 2017 (has links)
The private sector is an integral part of the global mainstream political development discourse. It appears in different contexts that define its roles in the field of development cooperation policy and therefore imply diverse political actions. The thesis analyses the Czech development discourse in connection with the private sector from 1995 until today. Based on the method of discourse analysis of the outputs of relevant development stakeholders the research identifies four different types of development discourse in relation to the private sector: "The private sector - a taboo", "We pay, we want Czech enterprises in development cooperation", "The private sector, the careless destructor", "The private sector, the darling of the development cooperation policy stakeholders." Out of the discourses identified, every type is typical for a specific time period as well as a specific set of stakeholders employing the discourse. Generally, until the Czech accession to the EU, the private sector does not seem to be an important element of the governmental development discourse since the theme is practically absent. This changes with the global economic crisis and even more notably after 2015 when generally all of the relevant development actors, including the traditionally very critical NGO sector,...
