The impact of the Gwembe Tonga Development Project on the Gwembe people

Musonda, Brenda Lulu 12 June 2009 (has links)
ABSTRACT The aim of the study is to investigate the impact of the Gwembe Tonga Development Project (GTDP) on the Gwembe Tonga (GT) people. The GT people were displaced in 1956 to pave way for the construction of the Kariba Dam that would increase the electricity supply to the mines in the Copperbelt and farmers. The number of people displaced was 57, 000 and they were not adequately resettled, rehabilitated and compensated. The GTDP was created in 1996 with the main objective to mitigate the negative impacts that the GT people have endured from the time they were displaced to date. A review of international literature on dams has indicated that dam constructions have led to displacement of the poor and marginalized people. Over 40 million people have been displaced worldwide. As shown in the literature review, are case studies that demonstrate the impacts of dams on people. In this study there six countries that have been listed namely India, China, Lesotho, Togo, Mozambique and Zambia. The people in these countries have experienced similar problems in terms of inadequate compensation, resettlement and rehabilitation. It is also noted that these dams leave a negative impact on the local community and environment. Development projects are equated with a general process of modernization where developed nations’ ways of conducting its affairs have been adopted by the developing countries to boost their economic development. This study has also looked at the developmental theories that the developing countries have adopted for economic transformation of both natural and built environments through construction of projects such as dams, roads, irrigation systems, pipelines, and energy resources, aimed eventually at generating and supporting both agricultural and industrial growth, and with them, increased national incomes. These large-scale development projects frequently make references to benefit the general population but experience has shown that the social costs of these projects are often borne by the indigent rural communities.

Modelling and Simulation of Hydrogen Diffusion in High Strength Steel

Seru, Vikas Vineeth, Polinati, Venkata Ramana Murthy January 2021 (has links)
This research is about modelling and simulation of how the hydrogen diffuses in high strength steels. The hydrogen diffusion in the material was examined by using finite element software with the help of material properties and some existing data. For modelling and simulating the diffusion analysis in finite element software, a cylindrical type dog-bone shaped specimen was chosen. To determine the diffusion at the centre of specimen, a cross-sectional area of the material was selected to proceed for the analysis. Abaqus software was considered as finite element software to progress the hydrogen diffusion and tensile testing of the specimen. Diffusion analysis was studied under the analogy of heat transfer and also, diffusion analysis with the addition of mechanical load was studied under the analogy of coupled temperature displacement in the Abaqus software. This process has executed for two types of high strength steels 316L and 304L stainless steels. The crack is also considered for analysis to check how it affects the specimen. Further, The 316L and 304L stainless steel results were compared to review that which steel is better to withstand the hydrogen diffusion rate and mechanical load on the material.

Segura-Trepichio, Manuel 25 July 2019 (has links)

Gränslös : An architectural portrayal of Torne River Valley

Olström, Julia January 2023 (has links)
This project takes place in a place far north, in a valley that has three rivers. The place is called Torne River Valley or Meänmaa, meaning “Our land” in Meänkieli. The thesis will address the identity displacement in Torne River Valley and the destructiveness of the colonisation of Sápmi. It will explore the balance between nature and architecture by creating connections between history, place, people and culture. Our relationship to the landscape and how we (can) perceive it, as well as the landscape’s potential to innovate will be examined. Methods including literature studies, exploration of reference projects, communication with project friends, mapping and model making will be implemented. The concept of identity, narrative, heritage and agency of landscape related to architecture and place will be reflected. The historical and cultural context of the research site will also be studied to get to know and understand the place. The research is used to portrayal the cultural and natural heritage and identity of Torne River Valley in a region-wide design proposal. A series of five architectural and cultural landmarks are designed along the valley - from the the Gulf of Bothnia in the south to the Barent Sea in the north. The landmarks will be placed within the shifting landscape and carry different stories to tell. Inspired by the landscape, its forces and movement, the vernacular and the history of the place, the design was developed strategically. The idea of the architecture is not to make huge interventions or stereotypical visitor centres as we know them with gift shops, cafes etc. Instead, the architecture aims to poetically illustrate the characteristics, atmosphere and story of the place as it is. The architectural language is meant to be understood as an intersection between nature, art and architecture- intended to innovate and enrich, and to make us be aware and present on some different premises than we are used to. Finally, the vision of the project is to rebuild the regional family bond and unify the identity of the valley as a whole. To think beyond borders and be limitless - gränslös. The project also aims to build regional hope, confidence and pride. However, architecture can not save the world, but it can contribute to how we perceive, value and appreciate our environment. This thesis will be my way to bring out the narrative and tell the story of Torne River Valley, using architecture and space as my tool.
