The illness experience of HIV-infected low-income Coloured mothers in the Winelands region : theoretical and practical implicationsHerbst, Elsa 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (DPhil (Psychology))—University of Stellenbosch, 2006. / Statistics show that young, heterosexual, low-income women are the fastest growing HIVinfected
population in South Africa and in the rest of the world. Despite the rapidly
growing numbers of women with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) and AIDS (acquired
immune deficiency syndrome), there is a scarcity of research that focuses primarily on how
poor minority and disadvantaged women of colour experience being HIV-positive, how
these women actually live and cope with their diagnosis. Furthermore, no research studies
on minority groups, such as the Coloured women in the Western Cape, exploring these
issues have been reported. Consequently, there is an urgent need for research studies in
South Africa to explore the range of discourses revealed by low-income and minority
women regarding their lives and experiences of HIV/AIDS, in order to generate
understanding and knowledge which could contribute to possible interventions, support
and care.
The present study aimed to: 1) explore the psychosocial concerns and mental health needs
of HIV-infected low-income Coloured mothers in everyday life; 2) construct a testable
Grounded Theory regarding the illness experience of low-income Coloured mothers; and 3)
recommend guidelines for health workers. The study was a systematic analysis and
documentation of how the illness (HIV/AIDS) was constructed in narratives of one
particular group of women in South Africa.
Eleven suitable and willing HIV-infected Coloured mothers were recruited by means of
convenience and theoretical sampling. The research study was conducted within a socialconstructionist
framework where the focus was on how HIV-infected, low-income Coloured
women make sense of their world and illness experience. Grounded Theory was applied
within the framework of qualitative research to analyse the data and to explore the
participants’ constructions of the illness. As qualitative measure, a semi-structured in-depth
interview schedule was developed according to Grounded Theory protocol. To reach the
aims of the present study, questions focused on specific behaviours, experiences, thoughts
and feelings that related to living with a positive HIV-diagnosis. In the participants’ accounts of their illness experience, two dominant discourses were
identified: a discourse of HIV/AIDS, within which the illness was constructed as an
stigmatised, incurable and deadly illness; as a shameful illness that someone should be
blamed for; and as being associated with secrecy, silence, separation, pain and suffering,
loss, and loneliness, as well as a discourse of mothering, what it means to be a “good”
woman/mother; constructed as someone that should primarily take care of her children
and family, and not be separated from them, or neglect or abandon them through illness
or death. It is suggested that the two dominant discourses found in the participants’
accounts of their illness experiences, namely the meaning of HIV/AIDS as an illness (a
stigmatised, incurable, and deadly illness, a shameful and blameworthy illness, an illness of
secrecy, silence, separation, pain and suffering, loss, and loneliness), and the imperatives
of mothering, what it means to be a “good” woman/mother (the primary caregiver of
children, someone who is connected, physically strong, healthy and productive, and
someone who is able to cope with her caregiving responsibilities even when in distress
herself) are irreconcilable.
It seems that these distressing and disempowering experiences of being HIV-infected,
while also being a primary caregiver and mother of children, caused the participants in the
present study severe psychological distress and suffering. Given these discourses and the
context of the participants’ lives within their specific socio-economic circumstances, namely
their lack of emotional and social support from friends and family, abusive relationships,
substance abuse, economic hardships, absence of treatment options, as well as their
experience of an incapacitating, incurable, stigmatised illness causing them severe physical
and psychological distress, it was argued that the majority of the participants in the
present study were in some state of depression and were in need of psychosocial support
and mental healthcare.

A profile of the fatal injury mortalities and suicides among children and youth in the stellenbosch districtSimmons, Candice 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (Psychology))--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / South Africa’s violence and injury death rates pandemic are steadily growing. Global estimates reported by the World Health Organisation (2000) have revealed that there is an increase in worldwide deaths. Approximately 5 million people die as a result of injuries each year and hundreds of thousands more are left physically or psychologically scarred (World Health Organisation, 2000). There are alarmingly high incidences of violence, crime and injury deaths in South Africa and the impact of these injury fatalities is imposing an immense burden on government, communities, families and even individuals. The burden of fatal injury mortalities has not fallen evenly. In South Africa, low socio-economic communities have borne the brunt of this epidemic. This study presents a focus on mortality and injury patterns and emerging problem areas for children and youth in a peri-urban setting. The aim of this study was to provide an overview of the fatal injury mortality and suicide data of children and youth in the Stellenbosch district, in order to develop a comprehensive understanding of the problem areas of injury deaths such as the main causes and consequences and age, sex, race and other pertinent comparisons. The study also aimed to consider the impact and relationship between alcohol abuse and youth injury deaths.
Mortuary data were compiled from 591 children and youth cases for the period 2001-2005 in the Stellenbosch district using the National Injury Mortality Surveillance System data form.
The present study highlighted several key findings. Transport-related deaths were indicated as a serious cause for concern among both children and youth in peri-urban settings. The importance of specific road safety awareness initiatives within peri-urban areas and among specific age groups were also indicated. Violence-related deaths were determined to be a leading cause of death among the older age groups in the youth category, with sharp force objects being the leading external cause of violent deaths. This highlighted an additional key finding reporting that sharp force objects death are a more serious cause for concern than firearm deaths in peri-urban areas, which challenges previous urban data.
vi
Burns and drowning were indicated as pertinent cause of unintentional deaths among both children and youth within peri-urban areas. This was suggested to be due to the high use of paraffin enabled heating systems in house in peri-urban areas and the lack of safety surrounding materials such as matches in the home. In addition, suffocation deaths among infants were also identified as a concern.
Furthermore, the link between alcohol abuse among the youth age group was indicated by a key finding that alcohol is a prominent risk factor for fatal injury mortalities among youth. However more studies are needed to explore the effects and risks of other substances on youth fatal injury deaths.
Several implications of the research findings are identified for health care professionals, policy developers, government departments and non-government organisations to consider in reducing the mortality rates of children and youth. These implications are critical in informing preventative interventions and initiatives aimed at enhancing safety to children and youth living in peri-urban areas within South Africa.

Transpersonal practices as prevention intervention for burnout amongst HIV/AIDS coordinator teachersJohnson, Sharon Mary 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (Psychology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT:
The impact of transpersonal psychology techniques presented in Capacitar workshops as a
prevention intervention for burnout amongst HIV/Aids coordinator teachers has not been
studied to date in South Africa. This research project utilised a mixed-method approach in a
pre-test and post-test quasi-experimental design. Educators from South Metro, who were
HIV/Aids co-ordinators in their schools, were invited to attend six days in total of Capacitar
workshops. Measures of their levels of stress and burnout were taken before and after the
intervention. Thirty teachers volunteered to take part in the workshops and 27 completed the
training. A control group (n=27) was chosen from a group of teachers in the Central and South
Metros of the Western Cape, South Africa. The Capacitar workshops were presented by
facilitators who had been trained and accredited by Dr Pat Cane, founder of Capacitar
International, California, USA.
The overall theoretical perspective adopted in the transformative approach was transpersonal
psychology. While equal priority was given to both the quantitative and qualitative legs of the
study, the quantitative data were gathered first. The Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) was used
to measure anxiety and the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) was used to measure three
dimensions of burnout: personal, work and client burnout. The means of the intervention and
control groups of teachers were found to be similar on the BAI and CBI prior to the
intervention. After the workshops, there were significant reductions in anxiety, personal and
work burnout in the post-test measures of the intervention group. There were also significant
differences in personal and work burnout of teachers between the intervention and control
groups. Although reduction in the levels of anxiety and client burnout (working with children)
was evident in the intervention group, this was not significant. The control group showed no
significant improvement on any measures and in some cases, levels of burnout increased.
Qualitative data in the form of global analysis of focus group interviews provided insights into
the experience of workshop delegates, and their teaching contexts. To cope with work and
personal stressors, teachers turned to physical (n=29), mental (n=17) and spiritual activities
(n=15), with many (n=19) using negative coping tools. Individual line sketches, a collage of
outliers and mind maps, together with portraits of delegates, highlighted the context and
experiences in the Capacitar workshops. As a result of exposure to transpersonal practices, HIV/Aids coordinator teachers were first able to start the process of healing themselves, and
then turn to their families, learners and the community at large to share the tools offered.
The qualitative data also yielded sixteen themes: Increased consciousness; personal
empowerment; role empowerment as carers; emotional intelligence; mindfulness; heart
coherence; processing traumatic pain; multiculturalism; self-acceptance; light heartedness;
interconnectedness, sharing; forgiveness; holistic, right brain healing; changing brain patterns;
mind-body-spirit integration and a return to wholeness.
The results of this study showed both quantitatively and qualitatively that transpersonal
psychological techniques mediated burnout amongst HIV/Aids coordinator teachers in Metro
South, Western Cape Education Department, Mitchells Plain, Cape Town. Recommendations
are made in the light of the findings and the limitations of the study. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING:
werkswinkels, as „n voorkomings-intervensie rakende uitbranding op onderwysers wat as
„n Kontrole groep (n=27) is gekies
Sestien tema‟s is geïdentifiseer met die kwalitatiewe studie: Verhoogde bewustheid;
persoonlike bemagtiging; rol-bemagtiging as deernisvolle persoon; emosionele intelligensie;
gefokusde belewing (“mindfulness”); sin vir koherensie; die verwerking van traumatiese pyn;
multi-kulturalisme; lighartigheid; onderlinge verbondenheid; mededeelsaamheid; vergewing;
onderwys, Mitchells Plain, Kaapstad.

Guide dog ownership and psychological well-beingWiggett, Cindy 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (Psychology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2006. / This study explored the dynamics of guide dog ownership from a psychological point
of view. The research was explorative in nature and employed two historically
distinct methodologies of enquiry (both quantitative and qualitative). This explorative
study relied on a very comprehensive literature review, which combined literature
from three distinct fields of research: disability research, psychofortology and the
human-animal interaction. Based on this literature review, three research questions
were formulated. The first part of the study focused on the concept of well-being. The
first two research questions dealt with the question of whether differences exist
between the well-being of persons with blindness and guide dog ownership and
persons with blindness without guide dog ownership. These two questions were
answered in a quantitative fashion by employing Ryff’s Scales of Psychological wellbeing
(1989) to two naturally occurring groups (n = 65). In general, no group
differences emerged, but the properties of the questionnaire and some confounding
may have skewed the results. The final research question explored the lived
experience of anticipating and owning a guide dog in a qualitative fashion. Two
interviews were conducted with each of six participants (one interview before guide
dog ownership and one after acquiring a guide dog). The qualitative methodology
yielded some very promising findings on the nature of guide dog ownership. Seven
themes emerged from the first interview and eight from the second. Guide dog
ownership seems to be a life-changing experience, with both negative and positive
consequences for the owner and his/her psychological well-being. This study
concludes with a strong argument for the complementary use of quantitative and
qualitative methodologies. Recommendations are given for several service providers in and for the community of persons with disabilities, and suggestions are made for
future research on a topic of this nature.

The fears expressed and coping mechanisms of a selected group of middle childhood South African children living in a children's homeBurkhardt, Kathe-Erla 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSc)--University of Stellenbosch, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The primary aim of this study was to establish normative data regarding the fears expressed by and
coping mechanisms in a selected group of middle childhood children living in a children's home with
respect to content, number, level and pattern of fears and the coping mechanisms as well as their
perceived efficacy. Children living in a children's home were referred to as children who were
removed from family care as a result of lawful intervention and were thus seen as a special
population.
The secondary aim was to ascertain whether any differences in the fears expressed were found with
respect to the independent variables of a special population and gender. The three measuring
instruments were the Free-Option Method (FOM), the Fear Survey Schedule for Children Revised
(FSSC-R) and the Coping Strategy (CS). The FOM was used to determine the content and number
of fears, the structured FSSC-R to establish the content, number, level and pattern of fears and the
CS to obtain the coping mechanisms used and their perceived effectiveness.
A predominantly quantitative method of data collection was used. This was also true for the data
analysis. In all three questionnaires were completed by 141 children living in a children's home (70
boys and 71 girls) in the Western Cape between the ages of 8 and 13. The three questionnaires
comprised of the FOM, FSSC-R and the CS and were administered in the above-mentioned order.
The content of fears based on the results of the FOM yielded only a few similarities upon comparison
to the findings of a recent study by. More similarities were apparent upon comparison of the results
of the FSSC-R implying that the structuredness of the measuring instrument plays a role in how
universal childhood fears really are. The number as well as level of fear was higher for the children
living in a children's home in comparison to the results of normative populations. This also holds
true for the level of fear on all of the fear factors of the FSSC-R Gender differences that were
apparent, were consistent with previous research with girls expressing a higher number and level of
fears than boys. The girls in comparison to the boys also displayed a higher level of fear on all the
five factors.
The coping strategy most often used as well as perceived effective was the secondary coping
strategy. This was followed by the primary coping strategy and finally the relinquished control coping strategy. Specific coping strategies, which were utilised, were support seeking and avoidance
and these are associated with a higher level of intemalising symptoms. Overall, the coping strategies
utilised were found to be effective in reducing the fear experienced.
Only a few similarities were apparent upon companson of the results of the two measunng
instruments, the FOM and the FSSC-R, emphasising the need for the development of an South
African Fear Schedule.
Lastly, recommendations for future studies are provided.

Heterosexual context and adolescent sexual risk-taking behaviour : an exploratative study in a coloured communityBurger, Catherin-Ann 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2000. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A combined quantitative and qualitative methodology was employed in order to explore
the intimate heterosexual context of coloured* pregnant adolescents as a determinant of
their sexual risk-taking behaviour. Structured questionnaires were completed by forty
young women attending prenatal clinics in the Stellenbosch area, and unstructured
open-ended interviews subsequently conducted with ten selected respondents. It was
found that the heterosexual relationships in which these girls were involved, tended to
be intense emotional attachments based upon a foundation of friendship and trust, and
reinforced by cultural notions of romantic love. In the wake of working class socioeconomic
circumstances these relationships became a primary source of meaning-giving
in respondents' lives, pervading all aspects of their everyday existence and guiding their
future prospects. And it is in this context that sex prevailed as a means of deepening the
emotional experience and pursuing relationship maintenance. Reproductive health
interventions for coloured female adolescents would have to acknowledge these
complexities and act upon them in ingenuous ways.

geselekteerde respondente gevoer is.

A programme for developing South African adolescents' social and emotional well-beingVan der Westhuizen, Leanne 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2002. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This assignment provides a description of the cognitive, social and emotional developmental tasks
of adolescence. In addition a summary of the most prevalent social, emotional and behavioural
problems reported during this developmental phase is provided. With this information as a context,
a school-based, curricula-integrated prevention programme is then introduced as a possible tool to
facilitate the development of positive mental health among adolescents. The programme discussed,
namely Programme Achieve (2nd ed.) by Dr. M.E. Bernard of California State University, is unique
in its aim to both enhance academic achievement and social-emotional well-being. Programme
Achieve (2nd ed.) is based on Bloom's school learning theory, rational-emotive therapy and rationalemotive
education and various cognitive-behavioural and socialleaming research findings. With its
sound theoretical and research base Programme Achieve (2nd ed.) offers students the opportunity to
learn a mindset that will help them develop their full academic, emotional and interpersonal
potential. Within the South African "Draft Revised National Curriculum Statement" (2001),
provision is made for lessons pertaining to the students' personal development. In response to this,
the author explores the suitability of Programme Achieve (2nd ed.) as a means to attain the specific
Learner Outcomes and Assessment Standards as specified in the "Draft Revised National
Curriculum Statement" (2001).

The experience of stress in adolescents living in low-income communities in the Western Cape : the role of self-esteem, coping and perceived social supportHarrison, Carmen 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Contextual stressors that are associated with living in low-income communities have an adverse impact on the mental health of adolescents. International studies indicate that this outcome is influenced by the presence of factors that may buffer the impact of stressors, or which may increase adolescents' vulnerability to experiencing stress. The present study was aimed at exploring the factors that influence the mental health of 173 school-going adolescents residing in low-income communities in the Western Cape.
By using a quantitative method with a correlational design, the research explored the relationship between depression (measured on the Beck Depression Inventory - Second Edition) and the following factors respectively: self-esteem (measured on the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale), coping strategies (measured on the Coping Strategies Indicator), perceived social support (measured on the Social Support Appraisals Scale) and resilience (measured on the Resilience Scale for Adolescents). Results of the correlational analyses indicated that high self-esteem, higher use of the problem-solving coping strategy, stronger perceived social support and higher resilience were significantly related to decreased levels of depression. In contrast, higher use of the avoidant coping strategy was significantly related to higher levels of depression. These results indicate that while some factors may buffer the impact of perceived contextual stressors on adolescents' mental health (for example, problem-solving coping, stronger perceived social support and resilience), other factors may increase adolescents' vulnerability to experiencing depression (for example, avoidant coping). These results may inform interventions focused on promoting mental health or preventing incidence of depression in adolescents living in low-income communities.
