It can be used to the management and allocation of resources, detection and correction of failures and also to the evaluation of performance parameters. To automatically accomplish the monitoring a tool is needed that has functionalities related the acquiring, processing, distributing and presenting of monitoring events. In this work we are interested in a monitoring system to give support to the experimental execution of distributed algorithms, with the objective of correlating the device status with the execution data and, this way, make possible an analysis of cluster resources used by the application. Then, it’s needed a tool with particular characteristics, such as the ability to collect data with a small time period, with low intrusiveness and making the full data available. As was not possible find in the literature a tool with the features required, we developed a new monitoring tool named MSPlus. The features of this tool were evaluated through experiments with the isolated tool and comparing it with other tool. Additionally, we apply the tool in a distribucted system to monitor a distribucted algorithm.

These properties can be achieved through replication techniques using algorithms that must be capable of tolerating faults. Certain faults such as arbitrary faults, however, may be more difficult to tolerate, resulting in more complex and resource intensive algorithms that end up being not very practical to use. Using an existing benign fault-tolerant middleware based on Paxos, we propose and experiment with the usage of consistency validation techniques and a distributed validation mechanism to harden it, thus allowing any application built on top of this hardened middleware to tolerate non-malicious arbitrary faults.

The grid concept has emerged from the increasing necessity of using available computational resources in one or more organizations in order to solve problems that require data sharing and large processing power. The main goal of a computational grid is to allow the distributed and parallel execution of tasks in shared resources. A grid is composed of a physical infra-structure, with one or more autonomous networks of computers, and a middleware, which provides services of information management about the grid resources, access control and tasks execution in these resources and communication mechanisms. Nowadays, there are some systems that support the execution of independent tasks in a computational grid, but only ones consider the execution of workflow processes, which allow the explicit definition of data and control dependencies among tasks, and this restricts a better use of available resources, scalability, execution performance, and automatic recovery of processes with the correct consistency maintenance. The Xavantes system, proposed and described in this work, is designed to reduce these deficiencies, having as its main goal the supports to the distributed execution of workflows in heterogeneous resources of one or more autonomous and dynamic organizations, providing a middleware that delivers a better scalability, performance and reliability to the application execution in grid computing / Doutorado / Sistemas Distribuídos e Redes de Computadores / Doutor em Ciência da Computação

O emprego de J2EE no desenvolvimento do ambiente Xchart visa reduzir o esforço de implementação destas funcionalidades típicas de sistemas distribuídos, além de aproveitar outros benefícios da linguagem JavaTM como a independência de plataforma / Abstract: The aim of the current project is the development of the Distribution Manager of the Xchart runtime environment. The Xchart environment as defined by the Xchart technology is composed by a set of tools that supports the development of dialogue managers of user interfaces. The specification of these dialogue managers is modular and describes the concurrent execution of these components, which allows a potential distribution of these components over a computer network. Xchart is also the name of the visual language used to specify and capture the dialogue control of user interfaces, and since Xchart is a variant of Statecharts, it can be applied in a major domain: the domain of the distributed reactive systems. The Distribution Manager is the component of this Xchart runtime system that provides the resources for concurrent and distributed execution of these reactive systems. The current project implements this component and the Xchart runtime system using available technologies of the Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE). J2EE is a specification of platform for development of distributed enterprise applications that offers a set of resources like naming and directory services, message service and a concurrency control mechanism based on atomic transaction management. Some of the benefits on using J2EE technology for the development of the Xchart environment are the reduction of the efforts typically required by the implementation of regular distributed systems algorithms and also the platform independence model provided by Java / Mestrado / Sistemas de Computação / Mestre em Ciência da Computação

Taxonomy of synchronization and barrier as a basic mechanism for building other synchronization from it

Braginton, Pauline 01 January 2003 (has links)
A Distributed Shared Memory(DSM) system consists of several computers that share a memory area and has no global clock. Therefore, an ordering of events in the system is necessary. Synchronization is a mechanism for coordinating activities between processes, which are program instantiations in a system.

Towards a model for teaching distributed computing in a distance-based educational environment

Le Roux, Petra 02 1900 (has links)
Several technologies and languages exist for the development and implementation of distributed systems. Furthermore, several models for teaching computer programming and teaching programming in a distance-based educational environment exist. Limited literature, however, is available on models for teaching distributed computing in a distance-based educational environment. The focus of this study is to examine how distributed computing should be taught in a distance-based educational environment so as to ensure effective and quality learning for students. The required effectiveness and quality should be comparable to those for students exposed to laboratories, as commonly found in residential universities. This leads to an investigation of the factors that contribute to the success of teaching distributed computing and how these factors can be integrated into a distance-based teaching model. The study consisted of a literature study, followed by a comparative study of available tools to aid in the learning and teaching of distributed computing in a distance-based educational environment. A model to accomplish this teaching and learning is then proposed and implemented. The findings of the study highlight the requirements and challenges that a student of distributed computing in a distance-based educational environment faces and emphasises how the proposed model can address these challenges. This study employed qualitative research, as opposed to quantitative research, as qualitative research methods are designed to help researchers to understand people and the social and cultural contexts within which they live. The research methods employed are design research, since an artefact is created, and a case study, since “how” and “why” questions need to be answered. Data collection was done through a survey. Each method was evaluated via its own well-established evaluation methods, since evaluation is a crucial component of the research process. / Computing / M. Sc. (Computer Science)

Autonomic management in a distributed storage system

Tauber, Markus January 2010 (has links)
This thesis investigates the application of autonomic management to a distributed storage system. Effects on performance and resource consumption were measured in experiments, which were carried out in a local area test-bed. The experiments were conducted with components of one specific distributed storage system, but seek to be applicable to a wide range of such systems, in particular those exposed to varying conditions. The perceived characteristics of distributed storage systems depend on their configuration parameters and on various dynamic conditions. For a given set of conditions, one specific configuration may be better than another with respect to measures such as resource consumption and performance. Here, configuration parameter values were set dynamically and the results compared with a static configuration. It was hypothesised that under non-changing conditions this would allow the system to converge on a configuration that was more suitable than any that could be set a priori. Furthermore, the system could react to a change in conditions by adopting a more appropriate configuration. Autonomic management was applied to the peer-to-peer (P2P) and data retrieval components of ASA, a distributed storage system. The effects were measured experimentally for various workload and churn patterns. The management policies and mechanisms were implemented using a generic autonomic management framework developed during this work. The motivation for both groups of experiments was to test management policies with the objective to avoid unsatisfactory situations with respect to resource consumption and performance. Such unsatisfactory situations occur when either the P2P layer or the data retrieval mechanism is configured statically. In a statically configured P2P system two unsatisfactory situations can be identified. The first arises when the frequency with which P2P node states are verified is low and membership churn is high. The P2P node state becomes inaccurate due to a high membership churn, leading to errors during the routing process and a reduction in performance. In this situation it is desirable to increase the frequency to increase P2P state accuracy. The converse situation arises when the frequency is high and churn is low. In this situation network resources are used unnecessarily, which may also reduce performance, making it desirable to decrease the frequency. In ASA’s data retrieval mechanism similar unsatisfactory situations can be identified with respect to the degree of concurrency (DOC). The DOC controls the eagerness with which multiple redundant replicas are retrieved. An unsatisfactory situation arises when the DOC is low and there is a large variation in the times taken to retrieve replicas. In this situation it is desirable to increase the DOC, because by retrieving more replicas in parallel a result can be returned to the user sooner. The converse situation arises when the DOC is high, there is little variation in retrieval time and there is a network bottleneck close to the requesting client. In this situation it is desirable to decrease the DOC, since the low variation removes any benefit in parallel retrieval, and the bottleneck means that decreasing parallelism reduces both bandwidth consumption and elapsed time for the user. The experimental evaluations of autonomic management show promising results, and suggest several future research topics. These include optimisations of the managed mechanisms, alternative management policies, different evaluation methods, and the application of developed management mechanisms to other facets of a distributed storage system. The findings of this thesis could be exploited in building other distributed storage systems that focus on harnessing storage on user workstations, since these are particularly likely to be exposed to varying, unpredictable conditions.

Menezes, Ramon Maciel 29 February 2012 (has links)
The present document includes a comprehensive literature review on power quality issues, to keep the development of this project aligned with national and international standards related; simulation algorithms such as FFT and CFA in order to verify the feasibility of its use, as well as limitations associated with the processing of strongly distorted waveform. It also includes the proposal and verification of an algorithm able to calculate the indices (selected during the standards review) that could assess the power quality through voltage and current signals. For prototype development, voltage and current sensors were selected for reliable acquisition system; a DSP, which running the previously simulated algorithms in order to process in real time the acquired voltage and current signals provided by sensors in order to report the status of the mains grid and/or events occurrence on the network through a ZigBee module, responsible for safety transmission data. The short term voltage change events class was also included in the real time processing performed by the DSP. Due to the unpredictability and short duration of these events, it was developed a tool capable of generating this class of events, the STVC generator. The PQ analysis in real time was feasible even with the use of low cost devices, allowing, although with some limitations, the survey of PQ information which known loads was submitted.
