Because the soil organic matter content under no-till is high, especially in the soil surface layers, the aluminum (Al) toxicity may be low, even in high acidity conditions. This study was carried out with the purpose of evaluate the soil chemical attributes, grain yield, and critical levels for the development of soybean after surface application of lime and ammoniacal nitrogen (N-NH4NO3) in crops of autumn-winter predecessors. The experiment was conducted in Ponta Grossa, Parana State, Brazil, on a loamy, kaolinitic, thermic Typic Hapludox (Oxisol) under long term continuous no-till (26 years). The experimental design used was a randomized block, in a split plot arrangement, with three replications. In the plots, were applied, in May 2004, four rates of lime on the soil surface (0, 4, 8, and 12 t ha-1) and, in the subplots, were applied annually, since 2004, four rates of N-NH4NO3 (0, 60, 120 and 180 kg ha-1) in top dressing in the black oat or wheat crops. In crop rotation was used corn, soybeans or beans in the spring-summer season and black oat or wheat in the autumn-winter season. Soybean was sown in November 2007 (cv. CD 214 RR), 2009 (cv. CD 206 RR), 2010 (cv. BMX Apolo RR), 2012 (cv. NA 5909 RG), and 2013 (cv. BMX Ativa RR). Soil samples were collected annually before soybean sowing at the 0–0.05, 0.05–0.10, and 0.10–0.20 m depths. Surface liming increased pH and the contents of exchangeable Ca2+ and Mg2+, and reduced the content of exchangeable Al3+ to a depth of 0.20 m. Nitrogen fertilization reduced pH and the contents of exchangeable Ca2+ and Mg2+, especially to a depth of 0.10 m, and increased the content of exchangeable Al3+ to a depth of 0.20 m. Surface application of lime increased the soybean grain yields for all N-NH4NO3 rates used in black oat or wheat crops. In unlimed plots, acidification caused by nitrogen fertilization severely limited the soybean grain yield. The critical levels of pH in CaCl2, base saturation, exchangeable Al3+, and Al3+ saturation in the 0–0.20 m layer for soybean production were 4.9, 33%, 8.0 mmolc dm-3, and 30%, respectively. Surface application of lime proved to be a key practice to ensure high soybean yields when high ammoniacal fertilizer rates are applied frequently in no-till systems.

Traits phénotypiques et développement de plantes exposées aux éléments traces; utilisation pour la phytoremédiation et l biosurveillance / Phenotypic traits and development of plants exposed to trace elements; use for phytoremediation and biomonitoring

Kolbas, Aliaksandr 05 October 2012 (has links)
This work aimed at assessing sustainable phytoremediation options for trace element-contaminated soils. It includes both the assessment of initial and residual risks (biomonitoring) and long-term sustainable decontamination options using plants and associated microbes, especially aided phytoextraction with the secondary purposes of producing plant-based feedstock and restoring ecosystem services. Copper phytotoxicity, the improving role of soil conditioners, and plant tolerance were tested using a bioassay as well as a fading technique. The usefulness of a mutant line of sunflower (Helianthus annuus) and a motherline of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) for the biomonitoring of Cu-contaminated soils was investigated. Biochemical parameters in relation to antioxidant status of plants and molecular responses to Cu excess generally showed a greater sensitivity than morphologic ones. Tobacco has a higher Cu tolerance than sunflower. Endophytic bacteria from various sources, notably from the seeds of metallicolous populations of grasses (Agrostis capillaris) can promote the growth of sunflower and tobacco exposed to Cu excess. For annual Cu-secondary accumulator plants with an excluder phenotype, increase in shoot Cu removal occurred primarily through increase in shoot biomass, rather than in shoot Cu concentration. Therefore, attention in field trials was paid to agricultural practices. Various improving options were tested in situ: application of soil amendments, the use of mutant lines and somaclonal variation, cultivars and crop rotation, bioaugmentation, fertilization, irrigation, etc. Two mutant lines and some commercial cultivars of sunflower as well as the motherline of tobacco showed a high potential for Cu phytoextraction as well as for plant-based feedstock. Ecological restoration options for Cu-contaminated soils based on phytoextraction using annual Cu-secondary accumulator plants with a high shoot biomass would (1) result in the progressive decontamination of Cu-contaminated soils during crop rotations, (2) provide a financial return through biomass valorization, and (3) promote ecosystem services.

Pétrologie, géochimie et genèse des gisements de tsavorite associés aux gneiss et roches calco-silicatées graphiteux de Lemshuku et Namalulu, Tanzanie / Petrology, geochemistry and genesis of tsavorite deposits associated with graphitic gneiss and calc-silicates rocks from Lemshuku and Namalulu, Tanzania

Feneyrol, Julien 16 February 2012 (has links)
Les minéralisations sont contrôlées par la lithostratigraphie et la tectonique / Tsavorite, a (V, Cr, Mn)-bearing green grossular, is hosted by graphitic gneisses or calc-silicates, often asssociated with dolomitic marbles, and belonging to the Metamorphic Neoproterozoic Mozambique Belt. Tsavorite is found either as nodules or in quartz veins (primary deposits), or in placers (secondary deposits). The mineralogical study of tsavorites suggests a new protocol to certificate their geographical origin, based on the V/Cr ratio, Mn content and delta18O. The study of the Lemshuku and Namalulu deposits in Tanzania has shown that the metamorphism of organic matter-rich and evaporites-rich sedimentary protoliths occurred at P = 7.0 ± 0.4 kbar and T = 677 ± 14°C, at 634 ± 22 Ma (U-Th-Pb dating on monazite). The metamorphic series cooled down at around 500 Ma (40Ar-39Ar dating on muscovite). Two metasomatic stages are linked to the formation of tsavorite : (i) diffusion metasomatism forming nodules at P = 5.0-7.4 kbar and T = 580-691°C; (ii) calcitic infiltration metasomatism forming quartz veins at P = 3.6-4.9 kbar and T = 505-587°C. These last have been dated in situ with Sm-Nd dating at 606 ± 36 Ma. Continental evaporites, deposited in a coastal marine sabkha with (Si, Ca)-bearing sediments, transformed into tsavorite in the case of the nodules, while the molten salts are associated with the formation of the quartz veins. The mineralisations are controlled by lithostratigraphy and structure
