Analytical time domain electromagnetic field propagators and closed-form solutions for transmission lines

Jeong, Jaehoon 15 May 2009 (has links)
An analytical solution for the coupled telegrapher’s equations in terms of the voltage and current on a homogeneous lossy transmission line and multiconductor transmission line is presented. The resulting telegrapher’s equation solution is obtained in the form of an exact time domain propagator operating on the line voltage and current. It is shown that the analytical equations lead to a stable numerical method that can be used in the analysis of both homogeneous and inhomogeneous transmission lines. A numerical dispersion relation is derived proving that this method has no numerical dispersion down to the two points per wavelength Nyquist limit. Examples are presented showing that exceptionally accurate results are obtained for lossy single and multiconductor transmission lines. The method is extended to represent the general solution to Maxwell’s differential equations in vector matrix form. It is shown that, given the electromagnetic field and boundary conditions at a given instant in time, the free space time domain propagator and corresponding dyadic Green’s functions in 1-, 2-, and 3-dimensions can be used to calculate the field at all subsequent times.

Centrum för lättläst : Ur ett domänanalytiskt perspektiv / Centrum för Lättläst : From a Domain Analytical Perspective

Andersson, Annika January 2010 (has links)
The aim of this two years master thesis in Library and information science is to study the foundation Centrum för lättläst and its work regarding information use with focus on information structures and information needs. The aim is also to examine how Centrum för lättläst cooperate with Swedish libraries to promote the work concerning people with reading disabilities. This master thesis applies a domain analytic theory and method inspired by Birger Hjørland. The domain analysis is confined to examine ontology, epistemology, sociology, empirical user studies, document and genre studies and studies of structures and institutions in scientific communication. The main source material consists of information from the homepage of Centrum för lättläst. The result of the domain analysis describes the ontology which implies to produce easy-to-read texts. The epistemology constitutes of regulations from the Swedish government regarding the work with easy-to-read literacy. The sociology represents several organizations and authorities connected to easy-to-read literacy. The domain analysis has also identified Centrum för lättläst’s target groups and their information needs which are varying. The study present numerous of strategies composed by Centrum för lättläst to satisfy the information needs of the target groups. Furthermore; the domain analysis has distinguished the information resources Centrum för lättläst use to distribute and make information accessible which are represented by documents within the domain. The result also shows that Centrum för lättläst’s work with information use includes important operators in the domain which contributes to endorse the information needs of the targets groups. Finally the domain analysis has examined the collaboration between Centrum för lättläst and libraries in Sweden, where the result illustrate procedures made by Centrum för lättläst in order to assist libraries in their work with easy-to-read literacy and the target groups.

A novel method for incorporating periodic boundaries into the FDTD method and the application to the study of structural color of insects

Lee, Richard Todd 29 May 2009 (has links)
In this research, a new technique for modeling periodic structures in the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is developed, and the technique is applied to the study of structural color in insects. Various recent supplements to the FDTD method, such as a nearly-perfect plane-wave injector and convolutional perfectly matched layer boundary condition, are used. A method for implementing the FDTD method on a parallel, distributed-memory computer cluster is given. To model a periodic structure, a single periodic cell is terminated by periodic boundary conditions (PBCs). A new technique for incorporating PBCs into the FDTD method is presented. The simplest version of the technique is limited to two-dimensional, singly-periodic geometries. The accuracy is demonstrated by comparing to independent results calculated with a frequency-domain, mode-matching method. The periodic FDTD method is then extended to the more general case of three-dimensional, doubly-periodic problems. This extension requires additional steps and imposes new limitations. The computational cost and limitations of the method are presented. Certain species of butterflies exhibit structural color, which is caused by quasi-periodic structures on the scales covering the wings. Numerical experiments are performed to develop a technique for modeling quasi-periodic structures using the periodic FDTD method. The observed structural color of butterflies is then calculated from the electromagnetic data using colorimetric theory. Three types of butterflies are considered. The first type are from the Morpho genus. These are typically a brilliant, almost metallic, blue color. The second type is the Troides magellanus, which exhibits an interplay of structural and pigmentary color, but the structural color is only visible near grazing incidence. The final type is the Ancyluris meliboeus, which exhibits iridescence on the ventral side. For all cases, the effects of changing the dimensions of various structural elements are considered. Finally, some earlier work on the design of TEM horn antennas is presented. The TEM horn is a simple and popular antenna, but only limited design information is available in the literature. A parametric study was performed, and the results are given. A complete derivation of the characteristic impedance of the basic antenna is also presented.

Fereidoni, Javid 06 January 2012 (has links)
The present study is aimed at analyzing the multilingual situation of Uimia from a domain analysis perspective. Threedifferent ethnic, Tinguistic, and religious minorities, namely Turks, Kurds, and Armenians are living in this city, speaking Turkish, Kurdish, and Armenian, respectively. The national language of the country, Lran, is Persian.Naturally, the people in this area are brought up bilingual or trilingual. To do the study, 900 questionnaires were collected from the whole city. 68l(328 Turks, 214 Kurds, and 139 Armenians)out of this were randomly selected. The questionnaires were basically adopted from Pishman's model with someimportant cultural and regional modifications. The main purpose of the study was domain analysis, i.e., to find outwhich language(s) from among Persian, Turkish, Kurdish and/or Armenian is dominant in different social domains. Thesocial domains which were hierarchically arranged from most informal to most formal ones include family, religion, friendship, neighborhood, transaction, education, and goveriunent/employment. ln each situation in a polyglossicsociety, there is a high (H) and a low (L) variety; and each variety has its own specialized functions. The domainanalysis was separately devised for each of the three different populations. To find out the effect of three independent variables of age, level of education, and sex on language choice, differentstatistical procedures of T-test, One-way ANOVA, and Two-way ANOVA were applied. While sex did not show tohave any effect on language choice, the other two factors had some fluctuations in the whole population. The study came to the_ conclusion that in Turkish population, the language of the region, Turkish, was dominant in allsocial domains. In the other two populations, namely Kurdish and Armenian, the official language, Persian, wasdominant while moving from more informa] to formal situations.

Dressing is an important operation for the grinding process. Its goal is to recondition the wheel tool to re-establish its cutting characteristics, owing to the wear produced after successive passes. Monitoring systems that use acoustic emission (AE) have been studied to correlate the signals with several tool conditions. This study brings a new approach of processing AE signals with the purpose of identifying the correct moment to stop the dressing, which is essential in an automatic control system. From the AE signals collected in dressing tests with aluminium oxide grinding wheel and single-point dresser, spectral analysis was made through power spectral density, selecting frequencies bands that best characterize the process. The statistical parameter ‘counts’ was applied to the raw signal unfiltered and filtered in the selected bands in order to identify the tool condition and, in turn, towards a monitoring system implementation. Results showed an expressive relation between tool cutting conditions and processed signals in the selected bands. There was a great disparity of the filtered signals in the selected bands and signals unfiltered, reflecting that the filtered ones were more efficient in terms of process automation.

ABSTRACT From the alignment between the Semiotics developed by the philosophers, Charles Sanders Peirce, Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, and the theoretical update for the Domain Analysis activity, based on the assumptions defended by the researchers of the Royal School of Library and Information Science, from Denmark, notably Birger Hjørland and Torkild Thellefsen, this thesis discusses the aspects of cognition to be observed to determine the signified in a universe of discourse concerning at facts of a domain, with the aim of increasing the degree of approximation between the realities, of the facts, understood and signified. In this way, a deepening of the process of knowledge acquisition is made, with the criticism at the atomist and structuralist approach, in which terms and relations of the universe of discourse are specified from a direct relation between sign and signified, a conception where the expression exceeds the content, and the space dimension prevails over the time dimension in the process of significance. The study environment used is that referring to computational ontologies, knowledge bases supported on semantic networks and semiotic frames, focused on the phases that go from the understanding of the reality of a domain to that where the significance of terms and relations is treated in order to obtain their respective signified. The research, in its experimental phase, within the proposed reference, analyzed the stages of development of the EDXL-RESCUER ontology, opposing the hypotheses treated in the thesis and the process of development of the ontology, resulting in a critical approach and a corresponding theoretical foundation, complemented by a methodology for Domain Analysis capable of acting in a post-structuralist dimension. The applied research method is qualitative, exploratory, involving updating the state of the art to the presented concepts, from the analysis of an ontology construction project

Routeplanner: a model for the visualization of warehouse data

Gouws, Patricia Mae 31 December 2008 (has links)
This study considers the details of development and use of a model of the visualization process to transform data in a warehouse to required insight. In the context of this study, `visualization process' refers to a step-wise methodology to develop enhanced insight by using visualization techniques. The model, named RoutePlanner, was developed by the researcher from a theoretical perspective and was then used and evaluated practically in the domain of insurance brokerage. The study highlights the proposed model, which comprises stages for the identification of the relevant data, selection of visualization methods and evaluation of the visualizations, undergirded by a set of practical guidelines. To determine the effect of the use of RoutePlanner an experiment was conducted to test a theory. The practical utility of RoutePlanner was assessed during an evaluation-of-use study. The goal of this study is to present the RoutePlanner model and the effect of its use. / Theoretical Computing / M.Sc. (Information Systems)
