Investigation of sediment properties and provenance in the EastRiver (Dongjiang), China

Fok, Lincoln., 霍年亨. January 2011 (has links)
Fluvial sediments, as a product of erosion, are associated with a wide range of environmental issues. In particular, sediment quality and its origin represent one of the focuses of contemporary water management. This study examines the characteristics and provenance of fine bed sediments in a humid sub-tropical macro scale catchment – the East River basin in South China. Sampling was carried out in the dry seasons of 2007 – 2008, following the protocol of USGS OFR 94-458. Sample density was one per 200 km2. The particle size, grain roundness, geochemistry, mineral magnetic parameters, clay mineralogy, along with C and N, were determined for the <2-mm and <63-μm size fractions. A geochemical baseline, along with its spatial distribution, was developed for the East River by using a statistical approach. The geochemistry was generally consistent with upper crustal abundance of China and with world average suspended matter concentrations. Some analytes, such as arsenic and sulphur, were elevated and were found to associate with anthropogenic activities, whilst rare earth elements (REEs) were affiliated with the igneous geology in the study basin. These associations were also detected from exploratory factor analysis, as well as the longitudinal profiles developed for the main stem of the river. Sediment source apportionment was carried out by utilizing the fingerprinting procedure on three geologic groups. Results indicate that provenance of sediments in the East River was more or less uniform among the different geologies, but the accuracy of the apportionment has been compromised by the relatively high within-group variance of the source categories. Results suggested that source apportionment was only viable by utilizing the <63-μm fraction, and grain size correction factor shall not be employed on samples with a high granulometric variance. REE represents a robust signature to indicate provenance from igneous lithology, in particular, granites. / published_or_final_version / Geography / Doctoral / Doctor of Philosophy

Experiencing Korean pansori as a Western-style singer : a vocal interpretation of Dongjin Kim's operas based on Kim's shin-chang-ak

Kim, Jumi 22 May 2012 (has links)
P’ansori is a unique form of Korean traditional music in the opera genre. It is known for its distinctive rhythm, vocal timbre, key, and texture. Musical pioneer Dongjin Kim (1913-2009) masterfully blended authentic Korean music with Western style music most notably in two operas that retained their p’ansori heritage while also appealing to wider audiences. Kim believed in the importance of accurately portraying Korean culture and history in his vocal music feeling that Korea’s “unique national music” had much to contribute to the rest of the world. Although traditional p’ansori operas are sung with a gritty and husky voice that lacks any sense of resonance, Kim adapted this harsh style for Western singers by introducing what he called “shin-ch’ang-ak” (New Singing Music). The purpose of shinch’ang-ak was to allow singers to retain their normal vocal technique while preserving key elements of traditional p’ansori. Previous studies of shin-ch’ang-ak have focused primarily on its history, purpose, and design and typically have been written in the Korean language. In this study I expound upon this work in English and I provide a vocal interpretation of Kim’s shin-ch’ang-ak as applied to excerpts taken from his two operas. I also offer my own suggestions for performing Kim’s shin-ch’ang-ak provided from the perspective of a performer who has practiced Western music. / Pansori -- Pansori performance issues -- Shin-chang-ak (new singing music) -- Performing shin-chang-ak -- Conclusion and suggestions for further study. / School of Music

Social Network in Dong Gang Tuna Market

Lin, Yi-Chen 16 February 2011 (has links)
Dong Gang are the biggest fresh tuna market in Taiwan. This thesis deals with the social networks in Dong Gang tuna market and how they affect the tuna market in Dong Gang. This thesis finds that although Dong Gang tuna market has public auctions, the transactions and exchange of information are highly shaped by social networks, especially in the Bluefin Tuna season that starts in April and end in June. Actors use social networks to avoid risk, control prices and maintain the quality of purchase. On the other hand, the status of actors, which is highly influenced by the licenses from the state, also has significant impacts. There are two kinds of license in Dong Gang tuna market; one for domestic market and one for export. Actors with higher status buying fish firs. This research recognizes that the market is embedded in social structure of economic sociology, and explains the dual meaning of the market: entity and concept. It also points out how local social networks shape deal of market. On the other hand, the price of Japanese tuna market influences Dong Gang tuna market; in other words, the Dong Gang tuna market is part of global tuna market leading by Japan, and the state uses license to control. That is, the Dong Gang fish market consists of local social networks, but also connects with state and global tuna market.
