Understanding The Influence Of Donor Residency On Motivations Toward Philanthropic Donations

Non-profit organizations have provided substantial services and resources to society such as arts, education, and social services. The cultivation and generation of financial donations through fundraising and development efforts are critical to the operation of non-profit organizations. This reality compels these organizations to continually attract and retain donors. To assist non-profit organizations' efficacy in fundraising, prior research has indicated the need for more studies on individual donor actions which could lead to a comprehensive model of donor behavior. One variable that had not yet been studied in relation to donor behavior is the influence of residency on donor motivations, specifically donors that own homes in different communities. Extant research reports that differences exist for homeowners related to their primary and secondary residences. These differences are evidenced by disparity in place attachment for the homeowners and by a variance in their behaviors at each home. This study surveyed non-profit organization donors in South Florida who own primary and secondary homes in different communities to determine if donors would exhibit a difference in their motivations for giving based on their different residences. Partial Least Squares regression, augmented with permutation tests, was run to evaluate hypotheses: donors would exhibit a difference in various motivations for making donations to non-profit organizations based on their residences. Results indicate no significant difference in donor motivation between the two residences; however, the significance levels of the latent variables did exhibit differences. The motivation factor of affinity for a cause/organization indicates an area of significance to both researchers and practitioners. The results of the study point to no differences in the amount donated based on whether the donor is considering their primary or secondary residence. Based on these findings, fundraisers do not need to target potential donors based on "seasonal" versus "permanent" residency; altruism, egoism, and tangible/financial benefits are similarly applicable regardless of location. One useful finding for managers with future fundraising campaigns is donor-perceived differences in affinity for organizations/causes and affinity for community. Fundraising efforts that center on campaigns and activities that create greater bonds between the donor and the organization/cause/community could foster greater fundraising results than those that appeal to simply "doing good" and "being important".

Nonprofit Fundraising Strategies to Provide Quality Sustainable Services

Nonprofit organizations are essential in providing goods and services to the under-resourced in the community. Nonprofits have experienced a growth rate of 47% in 2014 and yet 53% of nonprofits reported less than 3 months cash on hand needed to meet the demands of their clients. This explorative and descriptive study analyzed nonprofit fundraising strategies for providing sustainable quality services. The purpose of this study was to determine what strategies successful nonprofits used to increase funding as it relates to the delivery of quality sustainable service and what conditions influenced fundraising effectiveness. The methodology consisted of a qualitative, thematic research design. The sample consisted 19 participants who held executive level positions in their organizations. Data were collected through a series of recorded in-depth interviews and analyzed using a contrast-comparative qualitative thematic analysis of the recording and written transcription and the NVivo Software Data Management Program. The findings of the study revealed that leaders with transformative attributes and demonstrably connected to the mission drive the fundraising success of the organization by influencing donor relationships, strategies, and performance. The implications of the study include sustainable delivery of service by the development of effective leadership models for the internal stakeholders thus, positively influencing donor behavior and improved quality of life for the under-resourced over a sustained period. Future research using the mixed methods is recommended for examining how leadership styles may influence funding sustainability.

[pt] Este trabalho visa avaliar um sistema de doações via internet para operações humanitárias e assistência, o SmartDonation, cujo principal objetivo é gerenciar os recursos necessários para suprir as necessidades dos beneficiários. Através da interface de uma loja virtual, permite a efetuação de doações para diversas campanhas, através de doações monetárias. Desta forma, o sistema propõe uma melhor gestão nas operações de assistência humanitária através da compra em maior escala, trazendo maior economia nos processos operacionais. O objetivo do estudo é analisar a aceitabilidade do sistema, além de compará-lo com ferramentas já existentes no campo de gestões humanitárias. Para isto, utilizou-se como métodos de pesquisa a revisão sistemática da literatura (RSL), a fim de identificar as principais ferramentas utilizadas em gerenciamento de doações e comparar suas funcionalidades; o estudo de caso, a fim de investigar a aceitabilidade por parte das instituições; e a pesquisa survey, para investigar a aceitabilidade do sistema por parte de potenciais doadores. Como resultado da RSL foram identificadas 17 ferramentas utilizadas na otimização de doações. Das 19 funcionalidades avaliadas, o sistema atende a 12. Na análise do estudo de caso foi constatada a necessidade de resolução de problemas encontrados pelas instituições, mas que não comprometeram sua utilidade percebida. Na análise da survey identificou-se a potencialidade do sistema em mudar positivamente o comportamento de usuários avessos a doação financeira; e maior inclinação à doação em desastres de início súbito e causas naturais. Os três métodos são complementares e atestam a aceitabilidade do sistema pelos stakeholders envolvidos. / [en] This work aims to analyze a system of internet donations for humanitarian operations and social assistance, the SmartDonation, whose main objective is to manage the resources needed to meet beneficiaries s needs. An online store interface allows monetary donations to various campaigns. In this way, the system proposes a better management in humanitarian assistance operations through the large scale purchasing, bringing greater economy in the operational processes. The study objective is to analyze the acceptability of the system by potential donors and institutions, as well as to compare it with existing tools in the field of humanitarian management. For this, the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was used as research method, in order to identify the main tools used in donation management and to compare their functionalities; the case study was used in order to investigate the acceptability of institutions; and a survey to investigate the acceptability of the system by potential donors. As a result of the RSL, 17 tools were used to optimize donations, and of the 19 functionalities evaluated, the system caters to 12 of them. In the case study analysis, it was verified the need to solve problems encountered by users in the usability test, but did not compromise their acceptability and perceived utility. The analysis of the survey identified the potential of the system to positively change the behavior of users averse to financial donations, and a greater inclination to donate in sudden-onset disasters and natural hazards. The three methods are complementary and attest to the acceptability of the system by the stakeholders involved.
