In most of the tanneries, water and chemicals are added manually in the tanning drum and pH of the float / leather is adjusted. Addition of correct amount of process recipe are necessary for better processing of the hides and minimizing wastage of utility, thereby controlling pollution load in effluent. However, fugitive-emission from process and drains accumulate ammonia, hydrogen-sulphide and volatile organic compounds which contribute bad odor in tannery as well as in wastewater-treatment premises causing problems to occupational health & safety of workers. Both local and supervisory control stations are employed to monitor and accurately manage the unit operations. The objective of this work is to produce consistent quality of leathers and to provide a healthy environment through automatic dosing and odor abatement system. Therefore the entire process control operation is integrated to operate through PLCs with following five modules:
i) Water addition module ii) Chemical preparation and dosing system iii) pH monitoring and float recycle system iv) Drum rotation module v) Odor reduction module.
In the integrated system, critical and bulk chemicals are stored in bulk storage tanks and are drawn into the load cell (LC) as per process sequence or recipe for feeding into the drums through auxiliary tanks. The float-recycle system helps to remix & heat the float where a pH electrode is housed to monitor pH online. The pH monitoring system adjusts addition of critical chemicals that indicates automatic end point. The contaminated air inside the tannery is sucked and passed through blower and then through bio-filter. The filtration process is based on the principle that VOCs (in the order of 50-200 ppm) and odors can be biologically treated by naturally occurring microbes. The control parameters monitored are: moisture in the bed and uniformity of media (contaminated air or process liquor). The humidity and temperature of inlet media is controlled and contact time with microbes is 10-30 secs. Moisture is controlled to maintain microbial population.
A lead in laboratory scale has been developed to measure process variables (PV) considering their spatial distribution in two dimensions. Spatial distribution of process variables inside hides (across cross section) may provide accurate measurement of through reconstruction of image and data driven models using artificial intelligence tools. Computational intelligence is developed for updation of model parameters as that can be used for direct estimation of PV

For delivery, dosing and pressure control of fluids in mobile and stationary applications electromagnetically operated piston pumps are an established solution. The volume per stroke is exactly defined by the geometry. Nevertheless cavitation, more likely with the new fuel blends containing a high proportion of ethanol /1/, deteriorates the dosing precision of the liquid portion. One important criterion of precise metering is the transport of the liquids through the reciprocating piston pump without transferring bubbles. Especially, pumping in the range of vapour pressure of gasoline fuels implies challenges for precision. The objective of this work is revealing potential sources of reduced cavitation by optimising the design. For doing so, optical investigations have been applied. In addition to this, cavitation can be diminished controlling the piston’s travel externally. The second important item covers pumping of degenerated fluids even without negative effects on the pump’s performance. Up to now, wide, inefficient gaps or high force surplus are necessary. A new helix-design /2/ has been investigated and built up in order to reduce the described effort. The effects coming with the helix allow a permanent rinsing of the stressed surfaces, leading to lubrication and lower temperature loads. The results are shown in simulation, fundamental tests and is validated in practical pump operation.

Electromagnetically driven dosing pumps are suitable for metering any kind of liquid in motor vehicles in a precise manner. Due to the working principle and the pump design, an undesired noise occurs when the armature reaches the mechanical end stops. The noise can be reduced by an adequate self-learning control of the supply energy using a position estimation and velocity control. Based on preliminary investigations /1/, a method for noise reduction is realised by using a user-friendly, tiny and cost-efficient hardware, which enables a use in series manufacturing. The method requires only a voltage and current measurement as input signals. The core of the hardware is an 8-bit microcontroller with 8 kilobytes flash memory including necessary peripherals. A smart software development enables an implementation of the entire noise reduction method onto the tiny flash memory.

What is known and objective: Amphotericin is the preferred treatment for pulmonary histoplasmosis during pregnancy. The long half-life of amphotericin supports less than daily administration. Case summary: A 28-year-old pregnant woman diagnosed with recurrent pulmonary histoplasmosis was initiated on liposomal amphotericin 250 mg (4 mg/kg) intravenously daily. After 2 weeks, the patient was discharged and successfully received 250 mg thrice weekly at a hospital-associated outpatient infusion centre. After 6 weeks of outpatient treatment, a chest X-ray demonstrated no remaining disease and therapy was discontinued. What is new and conclusion: Administration of thrice-weekly liposomal amphotericin in a hospital-associated, outpatient infusion centre may be a promising option for stepdown treatment in patients unable to take itraconazole.

People at risk for blood clots are often treated with anticoagulants, warfarin is such an anticoagulant. The dose's effect is measured by comparing the time for blood to clot to a control time called an INR value. Previous anticoagulant studies have addressed agreement between fingerstick (POC) devices and the standard laboratory, however these studies rely on mathematical formulas as criteria for clinical evaluations, i.e. clinical evaluation vs. precision and bias. Fourteen such criteria were found in the literature. There exists little consistency among these criteria for assessing clinical agreement, furthermore whether these methods of assessing agreement are reasonable estimates of clinical decision-making is unknown and has yet to be validated. One previous study compared actual clinical agreement by having two physicians indicate a dosing decision based on patient history and INR values. This analysis attempts to justify previously used mathematical criteria for clinical agreement. Generalized additive models with smoothing spline estimates were calculated for each of the 14 criteria and compared to the smoothing spline estimate for the method using actual physician decisions (considered the "gold standard"). The area between the criteria method spline and the gold standard method spline served as the comparison, using bootstrapping for statistical inference. Although some of the criteria methods performed better than others, none of them matched the gold standard. This stresses the need for clinical assessment of devices.
