Synthesis of New Dibenzo[a,c]phenazine Discotic Liquid Crystal (IV)

Chen, Wei-jen 10 August 2011 (has links)
We take 5,6,11,12,17,18-hexaaztrinaphthylene and dibenzo[a,c]phenazine as our central core that with dove-tailed side chains. It is shown that the size-related increase of steric interactions among the peripheral side chains substituted to the aromatic core leads to a dramatically lowered isotropization temperature.

A Study of Dvořak¡¦s Four Symphonic Poems on Erben¡¦s Ballad Kytice

Lin, Tzu-yin 10 September 2012 (has links)
In the 1890s, Antonin Dvořak created five symphonic poems, respectively The Water Goblin¡BThe Noon Witch¡BThe Golden Spinning Wheel¡BThe Wild Dove¡BA Hero's Song. The first four poems originated from Erben¡¦s prosody anthology, Dvořak present the personality of the roles by using Czech rhyme and characters features, and successfully promote the development of plot by adding the realism sound effects with poems content. According to the unique narrative poem, it presents the original by using succeed verse to verse faithfully. In addition to the introduction and conclusion in this study, it contains three main chapters. The Chapter 1 is discussed in detail for ¡§the creation course and nationality about Dvořak¡¨, ¡§Symphonic poem of the 19th century¡¨, ¡§narrative poem and ballade¡¨ and four symphonic poems according to Erben anthology respectively. Chapter 2 focuses on the careers and brainchild of Erben, and the writing concept about Kytice. The chapter 3 is base on the created years of the four symphonic poems to know the narratives of Dvořak by investigating the creative concept and the process of composition.

Campaigning for Real Beauty or Reinforcing Social Norms? An Analysis of the Correlation of the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty and Advertisements in Fashion Magazines

Roedl, Sara J. 01 December 2010 (has links)
Since 2004, the Dove personal care product brand has received much praise for widening the definition and discussion of beauty through the use of nontraditional models in its Campaign for Real Beauty advertisements. This study examined the content of the Campaign for Real Beauty ads and the content of ads in magazines that ran Campaign for Real Beauty ads. This textual analysis of a series of five Campaign for Real Beauty billboards, commonly referred to as the Dove Vote Ads, sought to determine whether the message of the Dove Vote Ads was consistent with the Campaign for Real Beauty's stated mission of societal change and widening the societal definition of beauty. The content analysis portion of this study examined 785 female models in fashion magazine advertisements in a longitudinal analysis spanning the five years surrounding the introduction of the campaign. While the textual analysis questioned whether there were conflicting messages inherent in the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty advertisements, the content analysis sought to determine whether there was a measurable change in the appearance of stereotypical beauty ideals and gender role portrayals after the introduction of the advertising campaign. This was accomplished through an examination of the 785 female models that appeared in the September 2004 and 2008 issues of Cosmopolitan and Glamour, the highest circulation fashion magazines. This mixed-method study addressed two research questions and seven hypotheses. The manifest message of each advertisement, which encourages the audience to rethink standard notions of beauty, is contradicted by the latent themes. The five years between 2003 and 2008 saw a significant increase in diversity of the female models shown in advertisements. Additionally, women were shown as more powerful in 2008 using a variety of techniques. These shifts, if sustained over time, will serve as evidence of the social and cultural influence of advertising campaigns.

An Analysis of Tit for Tat in the Hawk-Dove Game

Modin, Felicia January 2021 (has links)
In Axelrod's tournaments of the Prisoner's Dilemma, carried out in the 1980s, a strategy called Tit for Tat was declared the winner, and it has since then been thought of as the strategy to use to do as well as possible in different situations. In this thesis, we investigate whether Tit for Tat will still do as well if we change the game to the Hawk-Dove Game. This is done by comparing Tit for Tat to other strategies -- All C, All D, Joss and Random -- one at a time. First we analyse under which conditions each strategy will be an Evolutionary Stable Strategy, then if it is possible for a population of these two strategies to end up in a stable polymorphism, and finally, if we have a finite population instead of an infinite one, under which conditions selection will favour the fixation of each of the strategies. This leads to the conclusion that how well Tit for Tat will do depends a lot on the different conditions on the game, but in general, the more times that a pair of individuals will meet, and the higher the value of the resource is compared to the cost of fighting, the better Tit for Tat will do.

Assessing Mourning Dove Population Declines: Changes in Nesting Dynamics and the Role of Perch Sites

Meyers, Paul M. 01 May 1994 (has links)
I replicated a nesting study carried out 40 years ago in southern Utah to assess reasons for long-term population declines of mourning doves (Zenaida macroura) in the western United States. I compared current nesting patterns to similar data collected in 1952. I saw little difference in nest success and nest predation, but reproductive output and nest density decreased dramatically. The number of young fledged per pair of adults was only 64% of that estimated in 1952. A 1-2 week delay in the nesting season contributed to this decrease, but cannot explain it entirely. Nest density was about 20% of that in 1952 and total reproductive output for the study area about 12-19%. Underlying causes for these changes are uncertain, but patterns of delayed nesting, high nest abandonments, and low reproductive output are similar to those seen in stressed bird populations (e.g., food/nutrient limitation or increased toxicant levels). Finally, highest nest density occurred in a habitat type (i.e., Chalk Creek) considered unimportant for doves in 1952. Nests in Chalk Creek suffered higher predation and abandonment rates than those in irrigation ditches. I also examined the effect of perch sites on nest density and distribution in two ways. First, I demonstrated a significant correlation between nest density and perch s:te density in riparian plots. Second, I erected artificial perch sites in the second year of the study and recorded changes in nest densities. For the year of the study only, nest density was higher in the experimental plots, but the difference was not statistically significant. From the levels recorded the previous year, however, nest densities increased in the experimental plots and decreased in the control plots. This difference was statistically significant, suggesting that mourning doves use the presence of perch sites as cues for habitat selection. Finally, in comparing the presence of other avian species, I found significantly more blackbirds (Aqelaius phoenicus and Euphaqus cyanocephalus) and western meadowlarks (Sturnella neglecta) in experimental plots than in control plots.

Disease and Habitat Change as Factors Associated with Mourning Dove Population Decline

Ostrand, William D. 01 May 1995 (has links)
The western mourning dove (Zenaida macroura) population has been declining since 1966. Data collected in 1951-52, in Fillmore, Utah, provided us a baseline for comparison with our study in the same area. Our approach was to determine whether a local population decline had occurred since the original data were collected, assess if trichomoniasis has impacted the local population, determine if changes in habitat structure affect foraging site selection, quantify changes in habitat, identify which habitats doves preferred, ascertain whether doves had responded to habitat change by changing food habits, and assess if changes in habitat were responsible in part for the local population decline. We found that population counts declined 72% and 82% from 1952 to 1992 and 1993, respectively. We determined that trichomoniasis was not an factor. in the decline. We observed that doves preferred foraging habitat characterized by a short and open structure and will not forage in the taller, denser vegetation that now dominates the study area. The most dramatic change in habitat was an 82% decline of land in winter wheat production. In 1951-52 and 1992-93, doves consumed wheat in greater frequency and volume than any other food item. Habitats selected for foraging were wheat fields following harvest, feedpens, hay storage yards, and weedy patches. Of these habitats, area in wheat fields and number of feedpens had changed extensively. The decline in wheat availability, either at harvested fields or feedpens, appears to have contributed to the local population decline. We used regression analysis to test the statewide relationship between the decline in the mourning dove population index, area in winter wheat production, and the number of farms with cattle and obtained significant results (R2 = .42, P = 0.001).

Jamesian Women: A Readers Theatre Adaptation from Selected Novels of Henry James

Wicker, Patricia Elizabeth Frazier 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to illustrate the power image of Henry James's female protagonists through a Readers Theatre adaptation of his novels, Daisy Miller, The Wings of the Dove, and The Portrait of a Lady. Chapter I includes an introduction and defines the purpose of the thesis. Chapter II briefly examines biographical information on James. Chapter III includes the analysis of the three selected novels in relation to preparation of a performance based script for Readers Theatre. In the Appendix is the Readers Theatre script with the inclusive transition and introductory material. The illustration of a typical Jamesian woman reveals a philosophic view of the human possibilities in freedom, power, and the destructive elements that limit an independent spirit.

REAL BEAUTY WITH REAL BODIES: THE BODY POSITIVITY MOVEMENT AND INCREASED CYNICISM TOWARD DOVE’S COMMODIFICATION OF FEMINISM

Garick, Bryn January 2023 (has links)
Beauty standards have perpetuated ideas of how women should look forever resulting in low self-esteem of women. Media have played a key role in these standards through advertising and modeling; however, Dove launched their Real Beauty Campaign to combat these standards and promote the inclusion of “real women” when it came to marketing and beauty standards. In 2018, Dove shifted the purpose of this campaign to include young girls, The Self-Esteem Project. I conducted an inductive and qualitative content analysis of 1000 comments left on Dove’s Real Beauty and Self-Esteem campaign videos to measure how the public’s perception of body image and this campaign as well as Dove changed over time, specifically throughout this shift in campaign messaging. Guided by a critical feminist theory lens, this study finds that as Dove’s videos became more focused on young girls there was an increased cynicism towards corporations. This cynicism was directed towards Dove with consumers questioning the motives behind the campaign. Additionally, there was an increased cynicism directed towards social media companies often blamed for perpetuation of beauty standards among girls. There was also an increased discussion around intersectionality and the effects that all aspects of a person’s identity can have on their experience with body image. This study found that the fourth wave of feminism that increased conversations around intersectionality and growing public knowledge of corporate social responsibility were responsible for the changes in public perceptions regarding the Dove Self-Esteem Project. / Media Studies & Production
