Secagem de papel produzido a partir do pseudocaule de bananeira. / Drying process for paper sheet produced from the bananas tree\'s pseudostalk.

Chertman, Marcio 19 July 2007 (has links)
The discharging of the banana tree´s pseudostalk after the withdrawal of the fruit is one practical mesure that has as the main objective of preventing the propagation of the Cosmopolites Sordidus (popularly known as broca, wich means drill), wich is an insect that proliferates in regions with abundance of this type of plantation. Brazil, third world-wide producer of bananas, is responsible for the discharging of millions of metric tons per year of pseudostalk. Among several possibilities for using the discharging material, some communities, as the one from Itariri´s area, São Paulo´s southern coast, are using the pseudostalk for special paper sheets. However the inherent limitations of the needy communities, as the local shortage of energy resources and restrictive environment rules are the main hurdles to the possibilities of local paper productions growth. The knowledge of processes used by the pulp and paper industries, associated with the study of specific conditions of the small artisan production of Itariri, can provide subsidies and results in alternatives to the artisan processes. A fundamental study of heat and mass transport for the cases considered here can provide an estimative of the performance of the productivity of the studied case. The work is focused on the papersheets drying process performance, which is the critical stage in the process of artisan manufacture. In the current process, the local manufacturers depend on the climatic conditions for the drying, mainly the solar irradiation. In the end of this work, an alternative process for the paper drying is proposed using the calculation procedure here developed, having the aim at reducing the energy consumption and eliminating the climatic conditions dependence.

Klimatizační komora pro zpracování uzenin / Desing of a processing chamber for smoked goods production

Čermák, Lubomír January 2009 (has links)
The aim of the diploma thesis is to design a drying chamber for meat/salami processing. The design itself comes after the necessary information regarding meat drying and curing has been given. The chamber comprises a main frame, stainless steel chamber, chain conveyor, powertrain and a ductwork for the air treatment. All the parameters of moist air are given as calculated for the states encountered during the drying process, i.e. air dehumidification, when passing the cooling coil, and heating. The control system to meet the required environment condition is also suggested.

Automating the process of measuring the mass variation of the product in a solar dryer is an advance over the currently used procedure which is manual. The objective of this work is to develop this automation using appropriate technology to be incorporated into the developing solar dryer at the Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG). These dryers need to be simple and inexpensive to be used by the family farming environment. The process used consisted in the construction and testing of a prototype of a drying chamber with rectangular shape, dimensions 32.2 x 43.0 x 34.0 cm, coupled to the solar collector. In the automated measurement system, a scale was used with aluminum tray, measuring 37.0 x 21.0 x 6.0 cm, fixed by a wooden rod to a load cell, type extensometer of sheet, which sends voltage signals, proportional to the mass variation of the product being dried, to a data acquisition platform with Arduino UNO integrated to the equipment. The loading cell attached to the tray was installed inside and, in a subsequent experiment, outside the drying chamber. The data acquisition and processing system was also installed on the outside of the drying chamber. Preliminary measurement tests were carried out with the use of halogen lamps, and the results obtained showed temperatures within the chamber of approximately 45°C ± 5°C, using a standard weight of 100 g. The results obtained during the drying of the silver banana (Musa spp) allowed the construction of the banana mass variation curves and the drying kinetic curve. Curves showing the temperature of the drying air inside the chamber were also obtained. This temperature was in the range of 30°C to 40°C, below that expected to be 50°C ± 10°C as a consequence of the low intensity of solar radiation on the days of experiment. Therefore the banana reached only the value of 44% moisture content on wet basis, above the desirable 25%. Undesirable interferences were observed during the automated measurement process, the strategies used (filters) to reduce interferences were not enough to reduce them completely and will continue to be studied in future works.

Evaluation of flood damage on cross laminated timber wall configurations

Kaya, Mustafa Nezih 09 August 2022 (has links) (PDF)
Greenhouse gas emissions are one of the critical factors that affect climate change, increasing flooding risk and threatening human life. The use of traditional construction materials is responsible for a higher percentage of global greenhouse gas emissions when compared to the use of sustainable materials in the construction industry. The substitution of current building materials with sustainable materials is essential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and positively influence climate change when the current construction demand in the world is considered. Wood is one of the primary environmentally friendly construction materials in regard to high carbon storage and low carbon emissions. Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is prefabricated and this type of composite wood material is convenient for constructing middle to high rise buildings because materials are able to be cut to specific specifications which lowers onsite labor time. This research observed the hygrothermal behavior of partially submerged CLT wall panels during the wetting and drying period and simulated the flooding of the panels with a software tool, Wärme Und Feuchte Instationär (WUFI). The higher number of CLT layers caused a slower water penetration rate throughout the layers with a lower water absorption rate corresponding to the first layer than the other layers, so the water was primarily retained in the first layer. Also, water penetration through axial direction significantly decreased due to gravity impact when the height of CLT panels was increased. The visual assessment showed that the 3-day-wetted CLT panel configurations did not show any type of fungi growth through the wetting and drying period. However, both untreated and treated CLT panels with the envelope system did have fungi growth on the drywall after a 20-day-wetting period.
