L’avènement de Jean II : querelles de succession et principes de légitimité (Xe-XIIe siècles) / John II’s accession : succession rivalries and legitimacy principles (10th-12th centuries)

Mourtoux, Jean-François 01 December 2012 (has links)
This study deals with the political and dynastic history of the Byzantine empire from the 10th to the early 12th centuries. It offers a reinterpretation of some succession crises and of the matrimonial and political strategy of great aristocratic families. About the conflict which opposed John II and his sister Anna on the succession of Alexius I in 1118, the analysis shows that this conflict was also the opposition of two sources of legitimacy: the Doukas and Comnenus families, and of two principles: masculine and absolute primogeniture. This hypothesis is confirmed by an analysis of the relations between both families before and after Alexis I’s accession: Alexius’ campaign against Roussel, the context of his betrothal with Irene Doukaina, of the taking of Constantinople are particularly revisited. Having reluctantly given warrants to his step-family, Alexius I uses marriage prohibitions to cancel his sister’s betrothal with Constantine Doukas, Michael VII’s son. The study then deals with the revolt of 1057, and shows that Constantine (X) Doukas and Isaac (I) Comnenus were the defenders of the female heirs of Constantine Dalassenos, who was, along with Romanos (III) Argyros, the head of one of the two families related to the Lecapenus and Macedonian dynasties. After an analysis of Romanus I’s matrimonial strategy, the study shows that Constantine VIII married his daughter Zoe so late because he wanted to reserve the power to his distant relatives and thus to establish, through practice, a succession rule in Byzantium.

唐代繪畫藝術的色彩研究. / Study on colors in painting from Tang dynasty / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection / Tang dai hui hua yi shu de se cai yan jiu.

January 2011 (has links)
An investigation into the relation between objects and colors is essential in understanding how color perception is evolved in ancient China. First, the separation of objects and colors is a major step to establish a color system. Second, the advanced understanding of a unifying framework between colors and objects has been passed down through generations, which not only made its impact on traditional Chinese paintings' theory with regards to color such as "using color to portray color", "coloring by physical appearance", but also in a way restrained ancient people's thoughts on color's intrinsic properties. To satisfy the taste and understanding in color of their time, the ancients opted for the physical coordinates of an object as their final choice of color to be depicted, indicating their belief in the unification of object and color. When being reflected in paintings, such belief is shown as a pursuit of stable and organized color compositions. / Behind this rich tapestry of colors, the physical production of color pigments is instrumental in the art production in Dunhuang. In the Tang dynasty, the flourishing printing and dyeing industry fuelled the development of plant dyes, some of which could be employed in paintings to make their contributions in art. Mineral pigments made their way to Dunhuang amid the frequent cultural exchanges between China and the West, which formed the material basis for the vibrant Dunhuang art. However, when weighting their color options amid the exported pigments, Central China-culture genes helped to make a conscious decision to reflect local cultural spirit. / Dunhuang in the Tang dynasty is not a simple phrase describing a physical location during a certain time; it is rather an interrelated and compound concept. The rich color culture of the Tang dynasty was preserved through art in Dunhuang and the special nature of Dunhuang culture made it possible for us to understand the complexity of Tang color concept. Through depictions of secular life in both words and images, Dunhuang helped to construct a complete picture of Tang color theory. / In Tang dynasty, the nation's perception of color matured in discipline and art forms are manifested in a mirage of colors. The secular quality in the Tang society dictates the use of natural colors. The different hues of red and green became the color codes for Tang spirit, which are also the dominant colors used in Dunhuang's mural art. The frequent use of red colors reflects the uplifting spirit of its time. / 王冬松. / Advisers: Kam Tang Tong; Jin Zhou. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 73-06, Section: A, page: . / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2011. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 278-286). / Electronic reproduction. 克拉克瓷研究. / Research on Kraak porcelain / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection / Kelake ci yan jiu.

Due to limited sources available, Chinese scholars so far are slightly behind the Western scholars in the study of Chinese export porcelain. It is sincerely hope that the current in-depth analysis of Kraak porcelain will contribute to portray a more comprehensive picture of Chinese export porcelain. / Kraak porcelain is a type of Chinese export porcelain with unique features which was produced in the second half of the sixteenth century for European market. It was the earliest type of export porcelain of some scale and had distinct characteristics. In this attempt to understand the rich cultural significance of Kraak porcelain, interdisciplinary research methodologies have been integrated. They include documentary and textual studies (history), calculations and statistics (economics), archaeological typology and stylistic analysis (art history and archaeology). / The aim of the thesis is to carry out a detailed study of Kraak porcelain, in particular specimen from datable contexts and archaeological material, so as to better understand the provenance of Kraak porcelain, its period of production and changes at different stages. Based on the results of the above examinations, a preliminary study of the sale and distribution of Kraak porcelain has been carried out---an area which has been neglected. Related issues such as order placing, different requirements of patrons and export routes are also discussed. / 范夢園. / Adviser: Harold Kar-Leung Mok. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 73-03, Section: A, page: . / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2010. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 248-267). / Electronic reproduction. Bestowing honour on royalty : A case study of the Mphaphuli dynasty

Mmbara, Swethani Virginia January 2009 (has links)
Thesis (M.A. (African languages)) --University of Limpopo, 2009 / The purpose of this study is to investigate the issue of bestowing honour to royalty in the Mphaphuli dynasty. The investigation focuses on the origin of the Mphaphuli dynasty. The Chieftainship has been traced right from the beginning when they arrived in South Africa until the current era. According to sources that have been consulted, the chief’s subjects used to respect him/her. Instructions given by the chief used to be carried out in a more positive way than it is in the present era. The socio-economic activities are also covered in the study. It has been shown that chiefs in the Mphaphuli dynasty are no longer getting what they are entitled to. Many subjects no longer find it necessary to participate in traditional activities such as Tshikona and Domba. The money that is supposed to be given to the chief no longer goes to him as it used to be due to modern social and political factors. The study also focuses on the impact of politicians on the status of the Mphaphuli dynasty. The democratic era has brought many changes when it comes to the aspect of the chief’’s authority. The functions of the chief are not clearly defined in the Constitution. By the look of things, some of the chief’s functions have been stripped off. For instance, the Thulamela Municipality has the right to give people residential sites. The chief is not consulted when this is being done. Money collected from buyers of sites goes to the Municipality. Civic associations on the other hand are always at loggerheads with chiefs. The chief’s subjects are sometimes encouraged to defy his commands. The study highlights critical challenges chiefs in the Mphaphili dynasty are facing. It reveals the fact that subjects are confused as to who has the final authority, the chief or the municipality? Things will run smoothly in the dynasty when the chief’s roles are well spelt out in the Constitution
