Neste sentido, o uso de ferramentas moleculares para a identificação e caracterização de espécies tem-se mostrado promissor. Há mais de 40 anos o uso dessas ferramentas tem auxiliado na identificação de espécies, principalmente para os grupos em que ainda faltam estudos taxonômicos, são muitos especiosos e/ou se caracterizam por possuir espécies morfologicamente muito semelhantes. Recentemente foi feita uma proposta para a identificação molecular das espécies, denominada DNA barcode, com o objetivo de criar um sistema padronizado, rápido e eficaz de identificação de espécies para toda vida eucariótica. O método utiliza um fragmento de 655 pb do gene mitocondrial COI que funciona como um código de barras de DNA. A metodologia se fundamenta na premissa de que a variação nucleotídica intra-específica é sempre menor que a variação nucleotídica encontrada entre espécies, permitindo assim separá-las com uma taxa de erro insignificante. A metodologia já se mostrou bastante eficaz com resolução maior que 90% para diversos grupos animais. A bacia do Alto rio Paraná drena uma área de aproximadamente 890 mil km2 e está inserida numa das regiões mais exploradas e impactadas do Brasil. É considerada a região mais bem estuda do ponto de vista ictiofaunístico da América do Sul, apresentando uma diversidade de aproximadamente 350 espécies. No entanto, esse número ainda é incerto, frente ao elevado número de espécies já reconhecidas e não descritas e à existência de regiões ainda pouco exploradas na bacia. Thus, the use of molecular tools for identification and characterization of species has shown promising. These tools has been used for more than 40 years to aid in the species identification, mainly in groups with few taxonomic studies, with high number of species and with morphologically similar species. Recently, a new proposal to species identification was presented, called DNA barcode. The main objective is the creation of a standardized, fast and efficient methodology to identification of all eukaryotic life. The method uses a fragment of 655 bp from mitochondrial COI gene. The basis of successes of this methodology is the fact of the intraspecific nucleotide variation is lower than the interspecific variation, allowing the separation of species with insignificant error rate. The DNA barcode has proven effective, showing a resolution greater than 90% for many animal groups. The Paraná River Basin drains an area of approximately 890,000 km2 and is located in the most exploited and impacted region of Brazil. It is considered the best studied basin from South America with 350 species of fishes recognized. System Identification Via Basis Pursuit

abstract: This thesis considers the application of basis pursuit to several problems in system identification. After reviewing some key results in the theory of basis pursuit and compressed sensing, numerical experiments are presented that explore the application of basis pursuit to the black-box identification of linear time-invariant (LTI) systems with both finite (FIR) and infinite (IIR) impulse responses, temporal systems modeled by ordinary differential equations (ODE), and spatio-temporal systems modeled by partial differential equations (PDE). For LTI systems, the experimental results illustrate existing theory for identification of LTI FIR systems. It is seen that basis pursuit does not identify sparse LTI IIR systems, but it does identify alternate systems with nearly identical magnitude response characteristics when there are small numbers of non-zero coefficients. For ODE systems, the experimental results are consistent with earlier research for differential equations that are polynomials in the system variables, illustrating feasibility of the approach for small numbers of non-zero terms. For PDE systems, it is demonstrated that basis pursuit can be applied to system identification, along with a comparison in performance with another existing method. In all cases the impact of measurement noise on identification performance is considered, and it is empirically observed that high signal-to-noise ratio is required for successful application of basis pursuit to system identification problems. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.A. Mathematics 2012

PROMOTING THE EMERGENCE OF EQUIVALENCE RELATIONS UNDER MULTIPLE CONTEXTUAL CONTROL WITH CHILDREN WITH AUTISM USING THE PEAK – E CURRICULUM: FEELINGS IN CONTEXT

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) language repertoire development varies greatly amongst each individual especially in one’s ability to understand emotions. One way to increase language development and further understand emotions is through stimulus equivalence. Theis present study examined the effefficacy of a stimulus equivalence training procedure in bringing the recognition of others’ emotions under multiple contextual control, and also evaluated co-occurring changes in the flexibility of participant responses to common questions requiring emotional recognition that is multiply controlled. The procedures were taken from the Promoting the Emergence of Advanced Knowledge Equivalence Module (PEAK-E) to aid in replication both clinically and in research. The results suggest that each of the three participants, all with an autism diagnosis, were able to identify the facial expressions of others when provided with a person and a context (i.e., What face does Person A feel at Location B?). In addition, two of the three participants were able to correctly identify an individual when provided with a context and an emotion (i.e., Who feels Emotion A at Location C?). Results from the flexibility probes throughout the study however indicate that the participants did not demonstrate an increase vin flexible responding following equivalence training. ectiveness of stimulus equivalence under multiple control to promote the emergence of an untrained relation via the PEAK – E Curriculum: Feelings in Context. Three participants diagnosed with autism, between the ages 12 and 17, were directly trained nine relations that established under a specific context a person will make a certain facial expression. Results indicate that all three participants demonstrated mastery in the training condition; however, when tested for equivalence only two of three participants were able to do so.

This study investigates the use of personal description as an investigation technique to identify suspects. The study entails qualitative data obtained from interviews with investigators, literature, as well as case studies. The study found that personal description can be used as an investigation technique to identify suspects. There are eight techniques that the investigator should apply in order to identify suspects or perpetrators of a criminal act. To conduct effective investigation, it is important for the criminal investigators to be familiar with the techniques of identification and the application thereof. The description of offenders plays an important role as far as arresting offenders is concerned. The methods used - or to be used - by investigators to describe a person were also discussed. It is important that the investigators should work with other government departments, private investigators and security officials, to implement this technique in order to identify and arrest offenders. / Police Practice / (M.
