The common play of ironic understanding : a critical study of Kieran Egan's theory of educational development

My thesis centers on a critical analysis of the concept of the "educated person" in Kieran Egan's theory of educational development. Egan presupposes that the erudite human being in western societies is ideally a sophisticated ironic thinker, that is, a person who possesses the fullest range of sense making capacities known to our culture; and furthermore, a person who tactfully and innovatively applies these capacities in everyday life. / My thesis attempts a "thick" description of Egan's notion of ironic understanding in light of the writings of Martin Buber on dialogue, Hannah Arendt on human thinking, Hans Georg Gadamer on the serious playfulness of the interpretative act, Richard Rorty on private irony and liberal democracy, and finally, Michael Oakeshott on the educational conversation. It suggests that these theoretical notions of the fully human life may be practically realized in the educated ironist characterized by Egan in his various writings.

Reconfigurable Solar Array Interface for Maximum Power Extraction in Spacecrafts

abstract: The efficiency of spacecraft’s solar cells reduces over the course of their operation. Traditionally, they are configured to extract maximum power at the end of their life and not have a system which dynamically extracts the maximum power over their entire life. This work demonstrates the benefit of dynamic re-configuration of spacecraft’s solar arrays to access the full power available from the solar panels throughout their lifetime. This dynamic re-configuration is achieved using enhancement mode GaN devices as the switches due to their low Ron and small footprint. This work discusses hardware Implementation challenges and a prototype board is designed using components-off-the-shelf (COTS) to study the behavior of photovoltaic (PV) panels with different configurations of switches between 5 PV cells. The measurement results from the board proves the feasibility of the idea, showing the power improvements of having the switch structure. The measurement results are used to simulate a 1kW satellite system and understand practical trade-offs of this idea in actual satellite power systems. Additionally, this work also presents the implementation of CMOS controller integrated circuit (IC) in 0.18um technology. The CMOS controller IC includes switched-capacitor converters in open loop to provide the floating voltages required to drive the GaN switches. Each CMOS controller IC can drive 10 switches in series and parallel combination. Furthermore, the designed controller IC is expected to operate under 300MRad of total dose radiation, thus enabling the controller modules to be placed on the solar cell wings of the satellites. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Electrical Engineering 2019

Howard Egan, one of the outstanding members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during the period shortly after its organization, demonstrated his faithfulness to the Church by supporting the leaders, through all their difficulties, from the day of his conversion until the end of his life. While living in Nauvoo he lent his assistance to the leaders by serving as a city policeman, as Captain of the Camp Creek detachment of the Nauvoo Legion on reconnaissance duty during the mob hostilities of 1845, and as a missionary for the Church in the Eastern States. During the exodus of the Saints from Nauvoo, he organized one hundred families of Saints into a compact group and moved them safely to the west bank of the Mississippi.In order to maintain continuity of narrative, the writer has followed closely the chronology of the Church History, Egan's diary as contained in the book Pioneering the West, and other histories which include him in their records. The material quoted in the pages of this thesis, when copied from records searched, has been written as the writer found it. He has made no changes in spelling or punctuation.

The aim of this research is to analyse whether the educational materials available to teachers of history at secondary level in Uruguay and Argentina, are appropriate for the objective of  teaching the Holocaust through the emotional engagement of students with the content. More specifically, I argue that witness testimonies, when they are included in the materials and used as providers of meaning and insight, in complement to the historian narratives and not merely as decoration, have the potential to produce effective and durable learning through emotional engagement. This assessment is justified by Kieran Egan’s theory of education, which advances a cognitive development model that identifies stages determined by the tools of cognition that are most effective at the time. The stages corresponding to secondary level education highlight the value and effectiveness a humanized approach rooted in conceptual categories that allow the creation of schemas can have. This research will analyse syllabi and textbooks to verify whether these tools of cognition are engaged, through testimony, to provide meaningful learning. The method chosen to conduct this research is content analysis, which is used to test for the absence or presence of specific codes in texts. The results of this research yielded the conclusion that the materials fail to take advantage of witness testimony to provide emotional engagement, which contributes to the silencing of the voices of the victims in the narrative of the Holocaust.

Goodbye Town

My collection of short stories is set in the fictional town of Lockswood Gap, Tennessee, and centers around the lives of four women. Through various points of view and story lengths, I interweave several story lines to span over a time period of about twenty years. Themes of change and regret are prevalent in these stories, as each of these four women must make, or refuse to make, choices that will impact their lives. I modeled my collection after Jennifer Egan’s A Visit from the Goon Squad, using individual short stories that share the same group of characters to tell a novel-length story. The ten stories included in my thesis will comprise about threeourths of the novel, and I will add several more to it following my graduation.
