The impact of entrepreneurship on economic performance in Central and Eastern Europe

Chiselita, Doina January 2015 (has links)
Entrepreneurship is viewed by scholars and policy makers as an important factor contributing to increased levels of economic performance. New businesses are conduits of innovation, connecting resources and ideas within the economy and fostering competition. Central and Eastern Europe is a special case regarding entrepreneurship, due to its communist legacy. The surge in entrepreneurial activities caused by the process of market liberalization ultimately affected economic development in the area. This thesis acknowledges the importance of studying entrepreneurship in Central and Eastern Europe, and aims to analyse the impact of new business formation on economic performance in the region. To do so, the thesis creates a comprehensive guide of theoretical frameworks linking entrepreneurship to measures of economic performance and applies them to the Central and Eastern European area. The thesis also develops an empirical study using regression analysis with regional Eurostat data, which shows that new business formation has a significant, positive impact on GDP levels in Central and Eastern Europe. The results also indicate that entrepreneurial activity should be regarded by policy makers as an important factor that leads to increased economic performance, in addition to measures of research and...

Principy informační ekonomiky a meziodvětvová analýza vlivu IT na přidanou hodnotu podniku / Principles of Information Economy and Impact of IT on Company's Value-Added: A Cross-Industry Analysis

Láníček, Adam January 2015 (has links)
The industrial age was bound to end when the microprocessor was invented. Even though the classical economic theory applies for today as well as for the 1960s, the last thirty years were symptomatic by the change of the fundamental characteristics of the economy and information technology plays a key role in this process. The aim of this thesis was to describe the principles and micro- and macroeconomic phenomena present in the New Economy of today, the challenges that the companies face in this environment and, finally, to conduct a cross-industry analysis on the impact of IT on company's performance, namely value-added. The empirical results did not show any clear patterns among the industries and therefore no significant relationship between the share of information technology assets of total assets and company's value-added could be proven. One of the reasons for that could be the technical issues regarding the statistical measurement of IT which also remains the biggest challenge for the researchers in this field.

Časové preference u ghanských pěstitelů kakaa / Time Preferences of Ghanaian Cocoa Farmers

Sobková, Eva January 2016 (has links)
Agricultural technology adoption in developing countries is an interesting topic for two reasons: there is often a gap between the realized and potential hectare yields, and agriculture is an important source of livelihood for a signi_cant part of the third world population. This thesis is attempting to analyze the relationships between time preferences of the Ghanaian cocoa farmers and their willingness to use fertilizers provided on a microcredit basis. It is using mainly basic statistical tests, contingent tables analysis and the logistic regression to find out whether the farmers who are patient and time consistent have different approach to technology adoption than the impatient and time inconsistent farmers. We also test for differences in time preferences between farmers with different gender, age and education, and we find that the younger farmers tend to be more impatient. The main conclusion of this work is that impatient and hyperbolic farmers are more likely to enter a microcredit program. We cannot present any significant inference about the link between the farmers' time preferences and their decision to leave a microcredit program. The basic aim of this dissertation is to evaluate the predictive ability and accuracy of the existing and until now created corporate models predicting financial distress and verification of multinational force models. Partial goals must be filled to meet the basic objective and therefore the theoretical part is especially mapping models used and developed in the Czech Republic and other European economies, of which the emphasis is primarily on the former transition economies. These now post-transition economies have passed a similar political and economic development as the Czech Republic, and therefore prediction models created and used there could be transferable to the environment of the Czech economy and Czech companies whose financial health and conditions are assessed. The practical part is based on the author's own research, which is dedicated to the evaluation of prediction models when applied to Czech business entities differentiated according to belonging to a particular industry branch.
