Esse estudo ofereceu elementos para uma avaliação das implicações, para a estratificação social brasileira, da situação de quase monopólio do ensino privado sobre as vias de acesso às credenciais universitárias mais prestigiadas / Abstract: This research approaches the internal division and articulation of the ruling groups by studying of their schooling experiences, taken as a fundamental part of a broader socialization processo The analysis refers in particular to the ruling groups that use in a more intensive way the school [nao pus via] as an intrument of social inserti<m anel differentiation To- study these groups, the space of the schools considered as of high quality in the city of São Paulo was selected for investigation. The University of São Paulo' s entry examination, together with representations of the media and the education professionals, was used to identify the hierarchy principIes prevailing in this space during the nineties. A recent history of the paulistas public universities' entry examination was the instrument to analyze the hierarchy implemented by these exams between different types of knowledg.e.The function of sociodicy performed by three private institutions (two cathalic. and one secular) was analyzed, considering in particular: the curriculum structure and the orgaruzation of the school work; the social and academic cnaracteristics- of both teachefs- and students; and the cultural and study practices of the students. This study provided elements. for an assessment of the implication, for the- Brazilian social stratification, of the quasi-monopoly held by the private schools on the ways of access to the most prestigious university credentials / Doutorado / Administração e Supervisão Educacional / Doutor em Educação

An exploratory study of essential life skills for adolescent elite athletes in South Africa

Woodruff, Roger Jeremy January 2016 (has links)
Magister Artium (Sport, Recreation and Exercise Science) - MA(SRES) / Pursuing a career as a professional athlete has become a viable option for talented athletes to pursue. However, in their pursuit of athletic excellence many athletes neglect their academic, work and post sport career planning. To help athletes with participation, educational, development and lifestyle issues many countries have developed athlete assistance programs. To achieve the objective of a Winning Nation and help talented South African athletes develop and perform at a higher level the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) plans to establish a national academy system. The role of the academy system is to assist in addressing the demographics of the national teams by accelerating the development of talented athletes particularly those from the disadvantaged groups. To ensure that a holistic approach is taken towards athlete development one of the services that will be provided is life skills training. To develop a successful life skills program, it is essential to identify the important life skills to include. Aim The aim of the study was to explore and identify the life skills necessary for inclusion in Life Skills programs in South African elite sport focusing on the development of adolescent athletes to enable them to grow up competent, healthy and reach their full potential. Design A pure qualitative research design was employed using thematic analysis. Data was analysed through the lens of Positive Youth Development (PYD) theory. Moreover, a semi-structured interview guide, consisting of open ended questions, was developed utilizing the 5 C’s of PYD as themes to facilitate the interview process. Nine current adolescent elite South African athletes, on the MacSteel Maestro’s program, participated in the study. A purposive sampling procedure informed the sampling process and a thematic coding framework was developed to analyse the interview data. Results Findings of the research provided a contribution to the literature in two ways. First, it provided a South African perspective of the life skills needed by elite adolescent athletes. Secondly, it identified the life skills elite adolescent South African athletes deemed important for their holistic development to include in life skills programs in South African elite sport. Time management and self - esteem / self – confidence skills were identified as the crucial life skills to be developed. Conclusion In general it can be concluded that the participants have benefitted from being on the MMP, and that the participants exhibited characteristics of competence, confidence, character, connection and caring / compassion both in and out of sport. / CATHSSETA

The Caribbean Court of Justice: An Investigation of the Impact of Elites on its Creation and Present Structure as it relates to Original Jurisdiction

Warmington-Granston, Nicole A. 27 June 2014 (has links)
The primary focus of this dissertation is to determine the degree to which political, economic, and socio-cultural elites in Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago influenced the development of the Caribbean Court of Justice’s (CCJ) original jurisdiction. As members of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), both states replaced their protectionist model with open regionalism at the end of the 1980s. Open regionalism was adopted to make CARICOM member states internationally competitive. Open regionalism was also expected to create a stable regional trade environment. To ensure a stable economic environment, a regional court with original jurisdiction was proposed. A six member Preparatory Committee on the Caribbean Court of Justice (PREPCOM), on which Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago sat, was formed to draft the Agreement Establishing the Caribbean Court of Justice that would govern how the Court would interpret the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas (RTC) and enforce judgments. Through the use of qualitative research methods, namely elite interviews, document data, and text analysis, and a focus on three levels of analysis, that is, the international, regional, and domestic, three major conclusions are drawn. First, changes in the international economic environment caused Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago to support the establishment of a regional court. Second, Jamaica had far greater influence on the final structure of the CCJ than Trinidad & Tobago. Third, it was found that in both states the political elite had the greatest influence on the development and structure of the CCJ. The economic elite followed by the socio-cultural elite were found to have a lesser impact. These findings are significant because they account for the impact of elites and elite behavior on institutions in a much-neglected category of states: the developing world.

Exploring Elite Soccer Players' Attentional Focus in Performance Tasks and Game Situations

Alves Ballón Tedesqui, Rafael January 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate elite soccer players' attentional focus during their best performances, better understand the strategies they use to enter or re-enter optimal attentional states, and explore potential attentional differences according to soccer positions, performance tasks, and game situations. No previous studies have explored elite soccer players' attentional skills from a naturalistic and qualitative perspective in such detail. The growing interest in soccer among Canadians provided further justification for this study. Data collection consisted of individual semi-structured interviews with eight elite soccer players from five main soccer positions, namely goalkeeper, defender, wing, midfielder, and forward. Cross-case thematic analysis indicated positive thinking and pre-performance routines as important sources of optimal focus. Attentional focus varied according to soccer positions and performance tasks. Information processing, sport expertise, and attentional systems theoretical frameworks informed the discussion of results. Applied and theoretical implications were drawn and future studies were recommended.

Vliv foliární výživy u révy vinné - přípravek Fertileader Elite

Kacetl, Michal January 2019 (has links)
This thesis deals with the influence of foliar nutrition in grapevine with a particular focus on Fertileader Elite. The vineyard in the cadastre of the village of Mackovice was chosen for the establishment of the experiment. The preparation was applied on 18.7. 2018. The comparison of the two variants was based on uvological and analytical values. From the view of uvology, we found the weight of the grapes, the weight of one berry, the weight of the grapes from one bush and the total yield. The analytical values were mainly represented by sugar content, titratable acid content and assimilable nitrogen. The results were compared and then evaluated. In the nutritional variant, the yield increased significantly by up to 53.63%. The sugar content measurement was also based on the nutritional variant, with the sugar content higher by 9.72% than the control variant. On the other hand, titratable acids decreased by 8.36% in the nutrient variant. Thus there was an increase in yield and sugar content, but also a decrease in the titratable acid content. The difference between the nutrient variant and the control variant in the assimilable nitrogen content was not significant. The 2018 was very warm and dry in terms of yield and sugar content above average, the trial was heavily influenced by the year and conducted only once, it would be appropriate to try again in more consecutive years.

A ‘New Gambia’? Managing political crisis and change in an African small state

Harris, David, Jaw, S.M. 24 January 2024 (has links)
Yes / The Gambia has experienced three significant political crises in its history: the attempted coup of 1981, the successful coup of 1994, and the latest events in 2016-17 when President Yahya Jammeh, having exercised semi-authoritarian power since 1994, was defeated at the ballot box but refused to step down until he was finally forced to do so. Using academic, media, social media and interview material, this article examines all three processes and their aftermaths, in particular the latter, through the lens of ‘small state’ politics. The article demonstrates that the small size of the population, elite, and landmass indeed matters in driving Gambian political processes. In 2023, several post-2017 processes, including constitutional change, transitional justice and elections, are playing out within the confines of the small state. This article then assesses to what extent a ‘New Gambia’, to use current President Adama Barrow’s phrase, has emerged. / The full-text of this article will be released for public view at the end of the publisher embargo on 21 Aug 2025.

Oil and Politics in North Dakota

Krein, Hilary Merrideth 24 October 2016 (has links)
In the past decade, North Dakota has experienced a substantial shift in economic and political activity due to oil. In addition to jobs and revenue, corporate interests have surged into the state with a dominating force. As players in a highly valued industry, oil companies have worked hard to protect and uphold viable markets in the state. These interests are observed in relationships with key politicians, especially among those regulating the oil industry as members of the North Dakota Industrial Commission (NDIC). Critics label this development as misguided, as an example of big business manipulating government. This thesis, on the other hand, contends that such arguments are predicated on prevailing, yet unhelpful standards, and offers an understanding of how ND's government operates in the real world through the use of qualitative and quantitative methods. By testing the relationship between political contributions and oil spills in North Dakota and interpreting the results using three political theories—tliberalism, realism, and elite theory—tthe case study shows the allegations against key politicians and the oil industry are not substantiated. Instead of a case of political corruption, the thesis shows that the case of the NDIC is in fact a paradigmatic example of how liberal-democracy really works. / Master of Arts

Jebli Music Culture: Soundings from a Moroccan Periphery

Chami, Hicham January 2024 (has links)
Decades of colonial dominance in the 20th century, exacerbated by continued Western encroachment and the persistence of internal elite influence, have produced a stratified and hierarchical cultural infrastructure within the Moroccan polity. As a result, many indigenous musical traditions are relegated to the periphery—misunderstood, devalued, and seldom heard in the public square, eclipsed by more privileged genres. This study specifically focuses on the repercussions of this hierarchy on the music culture of the Jebala region in the Rif Mountains of Northern Morocco. I investigate how, in the face of marginalization and even silencing within the musical soundscape of Morocco, Jebli musicians have mobilized in response by asserting local identity and pride through the performance of their indigenous musical genres. In doing so, they become allied with musicians throughout the Global South who claim agency through the praxis of their own distinctive aesthetics and traditions, giving voice to the subaltern. I approach this inquiry via my positionality as a native of Morocco with familial lineage in Jebala; adopting a stance of advocacy in identifying structures of colonialism and neo- colonialism, along with elite hegemony, which perpetuate ongoing cultural marginalization.
