The Life Cycle of Stars: Supernovae in Starbursts

We have observed the nearest ultraluminous infrared galaxy Arp 220 with a 13 month near-infrared observing program using the Canada France Hawaii Telescope to search for obscured supernovae in this extreme star forming environment. This monitoring program was aimed as a feasibility study to determine the practicality of a large scale near-IR LIRG/ULIRG imaging survey. Establishing the supernova rate in these dusty galaxies is an important step toward confirming theorized star formation rates and settling the debate between the dominant energy source in LIRGs: star formation or AGN activity. Both the deduced high star formation rate and far-IR luminosity of Arp 220 suggest an atypically high supernova rate of 1-4 per year, two orders of magnitude greater than that of the Milky Way. We attempt the first direct observation of this rate which to date has been probed primarily through radio measurements of supernovae and remnants. Through a point-spread function matching and image subtraction procedure we find no supernovae outside the galactic nucleus, consistent with the paradigm of a strong nuclear-contained starburst. Image subtraction residuals prevent the discovery of supernovae in the central regions of the galaxy. Using differential photometry we find evidence for a statistically significant brightening in the Arp 220 nucleus with a K-band peak of approximately $\Delta m_K=0.16$ magnitudes. To find the true peak magnitude we use Hubble Space Telescope archival data to subtract off the nuclear background and find an absolute magnitude of $M_K = -22.19 \pm 0.16$ (non-absorbed). This exceeds the luminosity of a typical core collapse supernova by roughly 3.5 magnitudes; rather, the observed variations in nuclear brightness are most likely the signature of an active galactic nucleus embedded in the dusty nuclei of Arp 220 or the superposition of light from several supernovae. This method is not sensitive to the detection of individual supernovae and we cannot rule out the occurrence of any nuclear SNe during the observing period. The brightening event is dimmer in the H and J bands, appearing to be affected by extinction. Interpreting this as a supernova-related event we estimate the extinction in the nuclear regions of Arp 220 to lie between $2.01 \le A_K \le 3.40$ or $17.95 \le A_V \le 30.36$ in the optical, in agreement with several other estimates. Improved resolution is required in order to detect supernovae in the extremely bright nuclear environments of LIRGs. Alternatively, infrared spectroscopy would reveal the telltale spectral features of nuclear supernovae. Spectroscopic observations of the Arp 220 nuclei were conducted using Keck in July 2013 for this very purpose; results are pending. We also explore the hypothesis that type Ia supernovae are produced primarily from young stellar populations. We model elliptical galaxies as two component stellar systems using PEGASE stellar templates: a fixed older underlying population coupled with a younger, less massive population. Varying the age and mass ratio of the young component, we examine its effect on I) the colours and II) the supernova rate of the single underlying population. We explore the effect with redshift and employ both theoretical and observational forms of the type Ia delay-time distribution. We then apply our models to the MENeaCS supernova survey and find that the number and distribution of red sequence SN Ia hosts agrees with theoretical expectations. The lack of evidence for a type Ia rate cutoff argues for a continuous delay-time distribution in support of the double degenerate model as the primary SN Ia progenitor channel. Elliptical hollow sections (EHS) are the newest steel shape to emerge in the industry, but appropriate design guidance is lacking, being completely absent from Canadian codes and guidelines. Geometric property and compressive resistance tables were established to be potentially added to the Canadian guides. The equivalent RHS method, originally proposed by Zhao and Packer in 2009, was simplified and modified to validate its use for the design of EHS columns and beams. An experimental programme was developed to investigate the behaviour of EHS-to-EHS welded connections. Twelve T and X connection tests were performed to study the effect of connection angle, orientation type and loading. Two methods were developed to predict connection capacities and failure modes: the equivalent CHS and the equivalent RHS approaches. Both methods proved to be conservative on average, but the equivalent RHS approach proved to be more successful at capturing the actual failure mode of EHS-to-EHS connections.

Plastic Interaction Relations for Elliptical and Semi-Elliptical Hollow Sections

The advancement of the structural steel manufacturing industry has led to the recent emergence of steel members with Elliptical Hollow Sections (EHS) and Semi Elliptical Hollow Sections (SEHS). Although these sections are gaining popularity among architects, the lack of design guidelines specifically tailored towards these sections inhibits their efficient structural use. Within this context, this thesis provides several steps towards the development of such guidelines. A review of the manufacturing process of hot-rolled steel sections is conducted with emphasis on hollow structural sections. The main factors affecting the formation of residual stresses during cooling of the sections are discussed. Lower bound plastic interaction relations for EHS subjected to combinations of axial force, bi-axial bending moments and torsion are then derived. The formulation is based on the lower bound theorem of plasticity and the maximum distortional energy density yield criterion. Its applicability for conducting the cross-sectional interaction check in structural steel design problems is illustrated through a practical example. A simplified and conservative interaction equation is then proposed based on curve fitting of the results of the lower bound solution. Upper bound interaction relations are next developed for EHS subjected to combinations of axial force, bi-axial bending moments, torsion and bimoments. The formulation is based on kinematically admissible strain fields within the context of the upper bound theorem of plasticity. The interaction relations derived successfully capture the effect of confining radial strains present at welded end sections, as well as sections that are free to deform in the radial direction away from end welded sections. An iterative solution technique is developed to solve the resulting highly non-linear system of interaction relations. The effects of residual stresses and initial imperfections on axial compressive resistance of hot-rolled EHS are then incorporated into the lower bound interaction relations. Towards that goal, the thermo-mechanical properties of steel were extracted from the literature. A thermo-mechanical finite element model was developed for prediction of residual stresses in rolled sections. The validity of the model was assessed by comparison against residual stress measurements available in the literature. The model is then applied to predict the residual stresses in hot-rolled EHS. A series of geometric and material nonlinear finite element analyses is conducted on columns of EHS sections. The analyses include predicted residual stresses and initial out-of-straightness imperfections in order to determine the inelastic buckling capacity of EHS members and generate column curves for EHS sections. The column curves are subsequently compared to those based on Canadian, American and European design codes. Two column curve equations are proposed in a format similar to that of the Canadian Standards for buckling about major and minor axes. The column curves were subsequently combined with the interaction relations developed to provide design rules for EHS members under combined loads. The last contribution of the thesis provides a formulation of lower bound interaction relations for SEHS subject to combinations of axial force, bi-axial bending moments and torsion. An iterative scheme for solving the parametric form of the interaction relations is developed and a grid of admissible stress resultant combinations is generated. A series of trial functions are fitted to the grid of internal force combinations and two simplified and conservative interaction equations are proposed.

Examining distal humerus morphological variation in Thai individuals using elliptical Fourier analysis

Sexual dimorphism of the distal humerus has been used for the development of morphometric sex estimation methods in human identification. In particular, visual assessment of the olecranon fossa, trochlear shape, and medial epicondyle angle are variably successful in differentiating females and males in African, Asian, and European groups. However, the influence of other factors on the distal humerus has yet to be fully explored. This study utilizes elliptical Fourier analysis (EFA) to examine the shape of these three features for evidence of sexual dimorphism and the effects of age-at-death, stature, and humeral measurements in 261 modern Thai individuals (f=116; m=145), 20-97 years of age. Left humeri were measured, photographed, traced, and analyzed in SHAPE v. 1.3 for EFA. Chi-square, ANOVA, and principal component results indicate sexual dimorphism in the olecranon fossa and trochlear extension shapes, both of which are correlated with epicondylar breadth. Trochlear extension was also found to be correlated with minimum midshaft diameter, vertical head diameter, and stature. The medial epicondyle was not correlated with any of the other factors examined, and age was not correlated with any of the shapes. High rates of intra- and interobserver error were found in the tracings of the three features. While future research should assess methods that better capture the medial epicondyle and improve reliability, features of the distal humerus are sexually dimorphic and somewhat affected by stature and/or body size.

A Survey and Performance Analysis of Orbit Propagators for LEO, GEO, and Highly Elliptical Orbits

On-orbit targeting, guidance, and navigation relies on state vector propagation algorithms that must strike a balance between accuracy and computational efficiency. To better understand this balance, the relative position accuracy and computational requirements of numerical and analytical propagation methods are analyzed for a variety of orbits. For numerical propagation, several differential equation formulations (Cowell, Encke-time, Encke-beta, and Equinoctial Elements) are compared over a range of integration step sizes for a given set of perturbations and numerical integration methods. This comparison is repeated for two numerical integrators: a Runge-Kutta 4th order and a NLZD4/4. For analytical propagation, SGP4, which relies on mean orbital elements, is compared for element sets averaged with different amounts of orbit data.

Energy Harvesting from Elliptical Machines Using Four-Switch Buck-Boost Topology

This thesis presents the topic of using the Four-Switch Buck-Boost topology as a DC-DC converter for the Energy Harvesting from Elliptical Machines Project. The project works toward providing a modular synchronous power generation system. Due to the dynamic and sporadic output voltage and power characteristics of the Precor elliptical machine, the system requires a DC-DC converter as a voltage preregulator. The inherent wide input range, high efficiency, and low parts cost of this converter well suit the application. This paper further discusses other topologies and their shortcomings, as well as characterizes the Precor elliptical machine and Enphase Microinverter for interfacing. This report contains a detailed discussion on component selection and PCB layout. The converter averages 94% efficiency during a normal workout power range. This paper also derives a system level control scheme for a modular grid-tie energy harvesting power electronics unit. The Four-Switch Buck-Boost topology efficiently and effectively harvests energy from the Precor elliptical machine as a constant input impedance and wide input voltage regulator for a constant voltage grid-tie inverter.
