Chariklo’s stellar occultations in 2013 revealed something that was unknown to date: particle rings around a celestial body of the Solar system other than a planet. This fact has aroused the interest of the scientific community on issues such as the process of forming these rings, how long they will exist, how likely Chariklo bodies are to have rings or how stable they are around of a small object, compared to the planets. In this work we are interested in determining Chariklo’s physical model by maintaining the current structure of the rings. We believe that this centaur is a body similar to an ellipsoid, but we do not know exactly the dimensions of its physical axes a, b, and c. The ratios between the values of these semi axes result in different values for the Chariklo flattening and ellipticity terms which can be represented by the terms J2 and C22 in its gravitational potential. In addition to determining the limits for the Chariklo form, we also want to study the effects of flattening and ellipticity on the dynamics of ring particles. For this, we did numerical simulations using an integrator that takes into account the terms related to the coefficients J2 and C22. The system we integrate is composed of Chariklo being orbited by a particle approximately the same distance as the rings, making use of the orbital osculating elements. The objective of these simulations was to reproduce the physical characteristics of the rings obtained through stellar occultations, however we can only do this reproduction using values of J2 and C22 very small, which contradicts the hypothesis of the centaur to have significant differences between their physical semi axis. For values greater than J2 and C22 the particles describe orbits with very high eccentricities, generating a large variation in the orbital radius. Therefore, we proceed to study the system making use of the geometric orbital elements found in the Borderies; Longaretti (1987), Longaretti; Borderies (1991), Borderies-Rappaport; Longaretti (1994) and Renner; Sicardy (2006). These studies show that the use of orbital osculating elements in simulations of particles orbiting bodies that are very flattened is not adequate. Therefore, we use these new elements in our simulations considering only the term J2 and the effect of high eccentricity that before happened was corrected. However, in addition to adding the term C22, an eccentricity of the orbits of the particles has again increased significantly, an effect that has occurred when using osculating elements in the simulations considering the term J2. So we did discuss about a possible way to lessen the eccentricity brought about by Chariklo’s elipticity. Finally, besides the study on the dynamics of the particles, this work has an analysis, using sections of Poincaré, of a possible resonance responsible for the stability of the rings. / 16/03727-7

Projeto, fabricação e caracterização experimental de metamateriais quirais para biossensoriamento na faixa de micro-ondas / Design, fabrication and experimental characterization of chiral metamaterials for biosensing applications in microwave regime

Leone Veiga Muniz 28 August 2013 (has links)
This work focus on the design, fabrication and experimental characterization of bi-planar chiral metamaterials in the microwave frequency range aiming at investigating field rotation as a possible transductor for biosensig applications. First, the metamaterial structures were simulated with commercial-based finite element methods, where the structures geometric parameters were defined to operate in the range of 8-12 GHz. Next, the metamaterials were fabricated and characterized experimentally. We have also developed a new technique for making metamaterials on flexible printed circuit boards. This proposed technique, based on traditional processes of printed circuit boards fabrication, utilizes combination of thin aluminum films and adhesive flexible plastic foils, thus forming a thin, flexible metallic foil. In addition to being as efficient as the conventional method, the proposed approach utilizes low cost materials with low insertion loss that can be adapted to substrates of any material, shape and thickness. We have also designed and fabricated metamaterials with similar geometries via the traditional circuit board method (FR4 and copper) in order to validate the procedures proposed in this work. The experimental characterization of the chiral metamaterials was carried out with antenna horns and a network analyzer. The effective medium parameters (chirality, azimuth angle, ellipticity, and refractive index) were then obtained from the Sparameters of the material via a parameter extraction method. The experimental results were in good agreement with those obtained numerically. Finally, we proposed a new chiral metamaterial application using its field rotation characteristics as a transductor for measuring glucose concentration in aqueous solutions. In the proposed experiment, the azimuth angle of a polarized plane wave propagating through the material was numerically calculeted and its polarization field rotation was directly correlated with the glucose concentration. The results indicated a very high sensitivity even for very low glucose concentrations, indicating that field rotation can indeed be used for this purpose.

Caracterização da subsuperfície rasa através da curva da razão espectral H/V e da inversão conjunta das curvas de dispersão e elipticidade / Near-surface characterization from the H/V spectral curves along with the joint inversion of the ellipticity and dispersion curves

The destruction caused by an earthquake at a site depends on many factors like source characteristics such as magnitude, epicentral distance from the site, depth of the source, and on the geological setting of the area. The destruction caused due to the geological setting of an area is termed as site effect. To model the site effect of an area is to determine the shaking level longevity and its displacement amplification. The elastic properties (shear and compressional wave velocities, density, thickness of soil layer, etc.) of the site are required to find out by employing various geophysical procedures. The knowledge of these elastic properties help in better designing the infrastructure, which reduces the chances of destruction caused by a local geological setting due to an earthquake occurrence. This procedure is widely termed as microzonation. The most important parameters for the microzonation are the thickness of soft sediments over the seismic bedrock and its shear wave velocity profile. These two parameters are properly characterized by employing various geophysical techniques like borehole measurement, seismic reflection and seismic refraction. The conventional geophysical methods bring some hindrance to the picture such as, the drilling of a borehole and artificial seismic sources deployment for the reflection and refraction survey, which are both expensive and time consuming, difficult or even in some case impossible to implement in urbanized environment, the investigation is depth limited to few tens of meter. The methods which replaced this conventional geophysical method from the last decades or so is the analysis of Earth vibration caused by the seismic noise which is produced by both natural and cultural sources. This ambient seismic noise can be recorded with less cost and effort with good lateral coverage. Various seismic noise techniques are employed for this job; however, the one which got the most attention in recent years is the horizontal over vertical spectral ratio (H/V) technique. The H/V spectral ratio curve is a fast easy and cheap tool for the near-subsurface characterization. There are various study performed on the topic which has tried to cover almost all the aspects and problems associated with the method. Here in this study, we try to detail the aspects of this technique, which are not been evaluated fully. The different modelling procedures presented to model and physically link the H/V curve with some physical phenomenon will be discussed and its numerical result with the experimental H/V curve will be compared for a borehole test site. The peak and the shape of the H/V curve will be modelled to find its peak frequency deviation from the shear wave resonance frequency by considering different wave-field around the peak. Similarly, the shape dominancy of the H/V curve linkage will be find out. The peak frequency of the H/V curve is used to estimate the thickness-frequency relation by regression analysis. Here we will show that the dispersion curve obtained from multi-channel analysis of surface waves (MASW) can be used to estimate the velocity at one meter and the shear wave velocity increase trend with depth. These values can be used to estimate the thickness frequency relation for an area and its result will be compared with the experimentally derived thickness-frequency relationship for the same area. The sensitivity of the H/V curve shape to the subsurface velocity structure will find out for two main modelling techniques (Rayleigh wave ellipticity and diffused field based H/V curve). The different parts of the H/V curve are inverted (back modelled) to find out the part of H/V curve which is carrying the most important information about the subsurface structure. The lesson learned from all this analysis will be applied to experimental data of three different sites. The Love waves might contaminate the result of the H/V curve. Two different techniques to remove their effects will be discussed. Then, the joint inversion result of the dispersion and this Love effect removed H/V for more precisely ellipticity curve is discussed. Some new aspects of the H/V curve technique are also discussed at the end.

Fourtinon, Luc 15 December 2017 (has links)
Embedded below the radome of a missile, existing RF-seekers use a mechanical rotating antenna to steer the radiating beam in the direction of a target. Latest research is looking at replacing the mechanical antenna components of the RF-seeker with a novel 3D conformal antenna array that can steer the beam electronically. 3D antennas may offer significant advantages, such as faster beam steering and better coverage but, at the same time, introduce new challenges resulting from a much more complex radiation pattern than that of 2D antennas. Thanks to the mechanical system removal, the new RF-seeker has a wider available space for the design of a new 3D conformal antenna. To take best benefits of this space, different array shapes are studied, hence the impact of the position, orientation and conformation of the elements is assessed on the antenna performance in terms of directivity, ellipticity and polarisation. To facilitate this study of 3D conformal arrays, a Matlab program has been developed to compute the polarisation pattern of a given array in all directions. One of the task of the RF-seeker consists in estimating the position of a given target to correct the missile trajectory accordingly. Thus, the impact of the array shape on the error between the measured direction of arrival of the target echo and its true value is addressed. The Cramer-Rao lower bound is used to evaluate the theoretical minimum error. The model assumes that each element receives independently and allows therefore to analyse the potential of active 3D conformal arrays. Finally, the phase monopulse estimator is studied for 3Dconformal arrays whose quadrants do not have the same characteristics. A new estimator more adapted to non-identical quadrants is also proposed.

Matériau composite de silice dopée par des nanoparticules magnétiques de ferrite de cobalt : influence de la structuration 3D sur le comportement spectral de l'effet Faraday / Composite material of Silica doped by Cobalt Ferrite magnetic nanoparticles : influence of 3D structure on the spectral behavior of the Faraday effect

Abou Diwan, Elie 24 October 2014 (has links)
However, due to an actual low figure of merit, this material cannot be embedded on integrated non-reciprocal devices. In order to exalt the magneto-optical effects and figure of merit, the LT2C laboratory adopted a process based on opals to 3D structure the material. The selected process consists in elaborating direct opals by self-assembling monodisperse polystyrene microspheres on glass substrate. Those opals are then impregnated with a homogeneous solution of sol-gel silica precursors doped with cobalt ferrite nanoparticles. Resulting samples are later oven dried for 1 hour at 90°C. Finally, polystyrene spheres are dissolved in ethyl acetate to obtain a 3D structure formed by air voids in doped silica matrix. In this context, the objective of this thesis is to optimize the fabrication process of opals in order to improve their structural and magneto-optical quality. Furthermore, it consists in making a systematic study of the magneto-optical effect in these structures in order to investigate the spectral behavior of the Faraday effect and thus quantify the figure of merit. Analysis of SEM images and optical characterization prove that our elaboration process leads to the fabrication of opals with good structural and optical quality. Measurements of Faraday rotation and ellipticity as a function of applied magnetic field show hysteresis loops with an unambiguous non-reciprocal behavior. These observations highlight the magneto-photonic character of the doped inverse opals. A systematic spectral study of the magneto-optical effect in these 3D structures displays two peaks and an attenuation of Faraday rotation and ellipticity, respectively at the edges and the center of the photonic band gap. However, these significant spectral modifications do not increase the value of figure of merit. This ascertainment is primarily due to structural defects that lower the transmission magnitude of the doped inverse opals in comparison to a magneto-optical reference monolayer

Homogenization of periodic lattice materials for wave propagation, localization, and bifurcation

Bordiga, Giovanni 29 April 2020 (has links)
The static and dynamic response of lattice materials is investigated to disclose and control the connection between microstructure and effective behavior. The analytical methods developed in the thesis aim at providing a new understanding of material instabilities and strain localizations as well as effective tools for controlling wave propagation in lattice structures. The time-harmonic dynamics of arbitrary beam lattices, deforming flexurally and axially in a plane, is formulated analytically to analyze the influence of the mechanical parameters on the dispersion properties of the spectrum of Floquet-Bloch waves. Several forms of dynamic localizations are shown to occur for in-plane wave propagation of grid-like elastic lattices. It is demonstrated that lattices of rods, despite being `simple' structures, can exhibit a completely different channeled response depending on the characteristics of the forcing source (i.e. frequency and direction) as well as on the slenderness of the elastic links. It is also shown how the lattice parameters can be tuned to attain specific dispersion properties, such as flat bands and sharp Dirac cones. In the research field of material instabilities, a key result proposed in this thesis is the development of both static and dynamic homogenization methods capable of accounting for second-order effects in the macroscopic response of prestressed lattices. These methods, the former based on an incremental strain-energy equivalence and the latter based on the asymptotic analysis of lattice waves, allow the identification of the incremental constitutive operator capturing the macroscopic incremental response of arbitrary lattice configurations. The homogenization framework has allowed the systematic analysis of prestress-induced phenomena on the incremental response of both the lattice structure and its `effective' elastic solid, which in turn has enabled the identification of the complex interplay between microstructure, prestress, loss of ellipticity (shear band formation) and short-wavelength bifurcations. Potential new applications for the control of wave propagation are also shown to be possible by leveraging the inclusion of second-order terms in the incremental dynamics. In particular, the tunability of the prestress state in a square lattice structure has been exploited to obtain dynamic interfaces with designable transmission properties. The interface can be introduced in a material domain by selectively prestressing the desired set of ligaments and the prestress level can be tuned to achieve total reflection, negative refraction, and wave channeling. The obtained results open new possibilities for the realization of engineered materials endowed with a desired constitutive response, as well as to enable the identification of novel dynamic material instabilities.

Essays on tail risk in macroeconomics and finance: measurement and forecasting

Ricci, Lorenzo 13 February 2017 (has links)
This thesis is composed of three chapters that propose some novel approaches on tail risk for financial market and forecasting in finance and macroeconomics. The first part of this dissertation focuses on financial market correlations and introduces a simple measure of tail correlation, TailCoR, while the second contribution addresses the issue of identification of non- normal structural shocks in Vector Autoregression which is common on finance. The third part belongs to the vast literature on predictions of economic growth; the problem is tackled using a Bayesian Dynamic Factor model to predict Norwegian GDP.Chapter I: TailCoRThe first chapter introduces a simple measure of tail correlation, TailCoR, which disentangles linear and non linear correlation. The aim is to capture all features of financial market co- movement when extreme events (i.e. financial crises) occur. Indeed, tail correlations may arise because asset prices are either linearly correlated (i.e. the Pearson correlations are different from zero) or non-linearly correlated, meaning that asset prices are dependent at the tail of the distribution.Since it is based on quantiles, TailCoR has three main advantages: i) it is not based on asymptotic arguments, ii) it is very general as it applies with no specific distributional assumption, and iii) it is simple to use. We show that TailCoR also disentangles easily between linear and non-linear correlations. The measure has been successfully tested on simulated data. Several extensions, useful for practitioners, are presented like downside and upside tail correlations. In our empirical analysis, we apply this measure to eight major US banks for the period 2003-2012. For comparison purposes, we compute the upper and lower exceedance correlations and the parametric and non-parametric tail dependence coefficients. On the overall sample, results show that both the linear and non-linear contributions are relevant. The results suggest that co-movement increases during the financial crisis because of both the linear and non- linear correlations. Furthermore, the increase of TailCoR at the end of 2012 is mostly driven by the non-linearity, reflecting the risks of tail events and their spillovers associated with the European sovereign debt crisis. Chapter II: On the identification of non-normal shocks in structural VARThe second chapter deals with the structural interpretation of the VAR using the statistical properties of the innovation terms. In general, financial markets are characterized by non- normal shocks. Under non-Gaussianity, we introduce a methodology based on the reduction of tail dependency to identify the non-normal structural shocks.Borrowing from statistics, the methodology can be summarized in two main steps: i) decor- relate the estimated residuals and ii) the uncorrelated residuals are rotated in order to get a vector of independent shocks using a tail dependency matrix. We do not label the shocks a priori, but post-estimate on the basis of economic judgement.Furthermore, we show how our approach allows to identify all the shocks using a Monte Carlo study. In some cases, the method can turn out to be more significant when the amount of tail events are relevant. Therefore, the frequency of the series and the degree of non-normality are relevant to achieve accurate identification. Finally, we apply our method to two different VAR, all estimated on US data: i) a monthly trivariate model which studies the effects of oil market shocks, and finally ii) a VAR that focuses on the interaction between monetary policy and the stock market. In the first case, we validate the results obtained in the economic literature. In the second case, we cannot confirm the validity of an identification scheme based on combination of short and long run restrictions which is used in part of the empirical literature.Chapter III :Nowcasting NorwayThe third chapter consists in predictions of Norwegian Mainland GDP. Policy institutions have to decide to set their policies without knowledge of the current economic conditions. We estimate a Bayesian dynamic factor model (BDFM) on a panel of macroeconomic variables (all followed by market operators) from 1990 until 2011.First, the BDFM is an extension to the Bayesian framework of the dynamic factor model (DFM). The difference is that, compared with a DFM, there is more dynamics in the BDFM introduced in order to accommodate the dynamic heterogeneity of different variables. How- ever, in order to introduce more dynamics, the BDFM requires to estimate a large number of parameters, which can easily lead to volatile predictions due to estimation uncertainty. This is why the model is estimated with Bayesian methods, which, by shrinking the factor model toward a simple naive prior model, are able to limit estimation uncertainty. The second aspect is the use of a small dataset. A common feature of the literature on DFM is the use of large datasets. However, there is a literature that has shown how, for the purpose of forecasting, DFMs can be estimated on a small number of appropriately selected variables. Finally, through a pseudo real-time exercise, we show that the BDFM performs well both in terms of point forecast, and in terms of density forecasts. Results indicate that our model outperforms standard univariate benchmark models, that it performs as well as the Bloomberg Survey, and that it outperforms the predictions published by the Norges Bank in its monetary policy report.
