The development of an immersive virtual exploratory engine (IVEE) for immersive analytics

Due to increasing data complexity, researchers are struggling to visually explore data using traditional methods. Research has shown that a variety of analytics-related tasks can be enhanced using new emerging technologies (e.g., virtual reality [VR] and augmented reality [AR]). This paper provides a detailed design approach for developing an immersive virtual engine system for conducting exploratory and descriptive data analytics. This system is called the Immersive Virtual Exploratory Engine (IVEE), is a VR system that allows users to experience full intractability with its graphical elements and examines various datasets within the same immersive environment. Basic plots—such as histograms, line plots, and other exploratory analytics—can be created in both 2D and 3D to visualize datasets. Furthermore, the proposed module provides a data sub-setting system, entitled “Lasso,” as well as a visual element merge system that allows users to subset and merge data using natural interactions only. The system also allows for the simultaneous visualization of multiple representations, thus supporting decisions that require numerous plots. Furthermore, the system supports remote collaboration, allowing users from different locations to come together in a virtual space and work collaboratively as they would in a real-life setting.

Multiple Futures, Diverse Paths : A Study of How Vietnamese Blockchain Professionals Imagine, Enact andNegotiate Futures

This thesis dives into the future imaginaries of blockchain professionals in Hanoi and Saigon. Looking at sites of futures enactment, and constant negotiations around an emerging technology, economy, and start-up ecology. The blockchain industry has risen to prominence in the socio-economic and technological imaginary of geeks, financial speculators, and states around the globe. In this thesis, I investigate a hitherto underexplored context of technological imagination. Based on physical and digital ethnographic fieldwork among blockchain professionals in Hanoi and Saigon and through an amalgamated theoretical lens with nodes in the anthropology of future imaginaries, emerging technologies, digital materiality, and anthropological theories of value, I set out to map and critically engage with the modes by which professionals in and around the Vietnamese blockchain industry imagine the future. These future imaginaries appear not only in speculative, predictive, and hopeful proclamation but too in present enactment; thus, doings in real time become crucial in this investigation. Technologies of imagination often deviate in form and teleology, so consequently, processual negotiations are continually unfolding. Convoluted alliances within actors are often placed at odds, or in line, with broader imaginaries predicated on different levels of social scale. These spaces between imagined future and enacted reality, along with how these are negotiated amongst, ultimately provide complex embedded contexts through which socio-technical assemblages, conceptualizations of value, and emerging phenomena can better be known in ways beyond techno-solutionist or -determinist narratives and critiques of multiple futures.

Synthetic Women: Gender, Power, and Humanoid Sex Robots

Drawing from gender studies, cultural studies, and feminist technoscience literature, this dissertation employs an interdisciplinary approach to analyze the androcentric imaginaries through which humanoid sex robots ("sexbots") emerge. Specifically, I utilize sexbots to interrogate and reflect on issues such as consent, whiteness, and humanity. By situating sexbots as proxies for feminized and racialized humans, I argue that the production, portrayal, and proliferation of sexbots are reflections of how we treat marginalized people, reifying existing hierarchal power relations. This project begins by analyzing the creation and dissemination of sexbots by popular sex technology ("sextech") companies. Critically surveying published papers, interviews, and research from various sexbot texts, I attend to gendered and racialized discourses of sexbot consent and companionship in human-sexbot relationships. Next, I analyze the overwhelming presence of whiteness with/in sexbots, exploring how anti-Black racism manifests in sexbots, and underscoring how both the present and "future" of sextech remains rooted in the past. Then, I catalog and dissect the published materials and interviews of prominent sextech creators, critically juxtaposing the marketing discourses of sexbots and evincing how both the sextech elite and science journalists—specifically writers I refer to as "sexbot journalists"—influence, change, and inform the meanings of sexbots. Finally, I turn to robots and robot alternatives found in feminist speculative fiction, utilizing these stories as a way of looking elsewhere in order to theorize what is possible for sexbots as well as our (current and future) relationships to these emerging technologies. At its core, this dissertation is an invitation to question white heteropatriarchy mediated through the controversial existence of sexbots. While synthetic women are the ostensible "subjects" of investigation—as well as commodities exchanged by creators and subsequently praised by enthusiasts—it is the "real" feminized and racialized humans who lie at the heart of this project. Through a much-needed feminist intervention, this project offers an in-depth analysis of humanoid sex robots and what they reveal about violence and power in the world around us. / Doctor of Philosophy / Humanoid sex robots ("sexbots") have served as inspiration for countless inventors, scholars, and writers of science fact and fiction. Sexbots, as I intend to show, are also shaped by gendered and racialized imaginaries, leading to their condemnation by feminist and race-critical science and technology scholars. At the same time, sexbots are popularly advertised as suitable alternatives for human companionship, promoted as emerging technologies designed for users uninterested in, or unable to, have sexual relations with "real" or "organic" women. Interrogating the troubling imaginaries behind these synthetic women, I analyze the creation, production, and dissemination of sexbots by popular sex technology ("sextech") companies. Specifically, I use sexbots to explore urgent issues such as humanity, consent, and whiteness. Unable to consent to the acts they are programmed to perform, or combat the abuse directed toward them, sexbots are often associated with sexual and gender-based violence. By situating sexbots as proxies for feminized and racialized humans, this project argues that the production, portrayal, and proliferation of sexbots are reflections of how we treat marginalized people, reinforcing existing problems related to patriarchy, misogyny, and anti-Black racism. While this project is deeply interested in sexbots, its heart is intimately human. Ultimately, I use sexbots to critically reflect on issues of power and violence in our world, as well as to (re)imagine feminist relationships to these emerging technologies.

Os usos de dispositivos CMOS dependem profundamente da lógica de portas E/OU/INV. À medida que os dispositivos CMOS estão atingindo oslimites fisicos, pesquisadores aumento esforço para prolongar a vida útil da tecnologia CMOS. Também é necessário investigar dispositivos alternativos, que em muitos casos implicam no uso de operações lógicas básicas diferentes. Como as ferramentas comerciais de síntese não são capazes de manipular eficientemente estas tecnologias Esta tese de doutorado foca em produzir algoritmos eficientes para projeto de circuitos tanto em CMOS quanto em novas tecnologias, integrando estes algorithmos em fluxos de projeto. Para esta tarefa, aplicamos a técnica da composição functional, para sintetizar eficiente tanto em CMOS quanto em tecnologias emergentes. Em relação a circuitos baseados em CMOS, investigamos a composição funcional para fatoração de funções multi-saídas, aplicadas em um fluxo de resíntese. Também manipulamos funções aproximadas, a fim de sintetizar módulos de redundância tripla aproximada. No que diz respeito as tecnologias emergentes, exploramos a composição funcional através de diodos spintrônicos e outras abordagens promissoras com base em diferentes implementações de lógica: a lógica de limiar, lógica majoritária e lógica de implicação. Resultados apresentam uma melhoria considerável em relação aos métodos estadoda- arte tanto para aplicações CMOS quanto aplicações de tecnologias emergentes, demonstrando a capacidade de lidar com diferentes tecnologias e mostrando a possibilidade de melhorar tecnologias ainda não exploradas. / The advances in semiconductor industry over the last decades have been strongly based on continuous scaling down of dimensions in manufactured CMOS devices. The use of CMOS devices profoundly relies on AND/OR/Inverter logic. As the CMOS scaling is reaching its physical limits, researchers increase the effort to prolong the CMOS life. Also, it is necessary to investigate alternative devices, which in many cases implies the use of different basic logic operations. As the commercial synthesis tools are not able to handle these technologies efficiently, there is an opportunity to research alternative logic implementations better suited for these new devices. This thesis focuses on presenting efficient algorithms to design circuits in both CMOS and new technologies while integrating these algorithms into regular design flows. For this task, we apply the functional composition technique, to efficiently synthesize both CMOS and emerging technologies. The functional composition is a bottom-up synthesis approach, providing flexibility to implement algorithms with optimal or suboptimal results for different technologies. To investigate how the functional composition compares to the state-of-the-art synthesis methods, we propose to apply this synthesis paradigm into six different scenarios. Two of them focus on CMOS-based circuits, and other four are based on emerging technologies. Regarding CMOSbased circuits, we investigate functional composition to investigate multi-output factorization in a circuit resynthesis flow. Also, we manipulate approximate functions to synthesize approximate triple modular redundancy (ATMR) modules. Concerning emerging technologies, we explore functional composition over spin-diode circuits and other promising approaches based on different logic implementations: threshold logic, majority logic, and implication logic. Results present a considerable improvement over the state-of-the-art methods for both CMOS and emerging technologies applications, demonstrating the ability to handle different technologies and showing the possibility to improve technologies not explored yet.

Innovative teachers’ pedagogical efficacy in their use of emerging technologies

Innovative teaching is, in essence, the art of breaking down barriers which prevent educators from preparing learners for the gruelling demands of the 21st century by exploiting the affordances of emerging Information and communications technologies (ICT) to enhance their teaching and learning strategies. The resulting new educational practice can affect roles, learning situations, patterns of interaction, learning spaces, strategies and theories as well as modes of assessment (Mioduser, Nachmias, Tubin,&Forkosh-Baruch, 2002a). The problem addressed in this study is that of innovative teacher knowledge construction and its context. The role of educational technologies in teaching and learning has evolved and changed dramatically over time but little is understood of how this knowledge manifests itself in their practice and how it is replicated and shared in practice. Pioneering, innovative teachers have developed personal theories that may potentially inform future practice once articulated and disseminated. This study sets out to deepen our understanding of how new knowledge is created in practice by innovative teachers and how this knowledge manifests itself in teaching and learning with emerging ICT. The consequent collaboration between researcher and participant teachers can act as a reconciliatory measure between practice and theory. The literature reviewed draws on tenets from socio-cultural theory, critical philosophy, emerging technology and teaching and learning theory and aims to construct rational foundations to assist in the articulation of new theories which, in turn, will better our understanding of this new emerging pedagogical practice. A post-modernistic interpretive prism views the research investigation through the work of teachers qualified as finalists in the Microsoft Innovative Teachers Forum Awards (ITFA) competition. This annual competition recognises and connects innovative teachers who share a common interest in the enhancement of teaching and learning through the use of technology. Data collecting instruments include metadata consisting of educational multimedia artefacts, virtual classroom tours (VCT’s), document analysis, innovative teacher workshops and interviews. The data were qualitatively analysed using Straussian Grounded Theory Method to articulate a substantive theory which aims to better our understanding of knowledge creation when innovative teachers use emerging technology to enhance their teaching and learning. The resultant substantive theory’s three core components comprise moral cohesion; innovation negotiations in context; and responsive governance as essential to innovative teachers’ pedagogical efficacy when they engage with emerging technologies. Innovative teachers’ perception of the professional burden they carry along with their bricoleur attitude allude to them using whatever means and whatever is at hand to equip learners with the skills required to make them contributing members of their community and the information society. Strategies for the constant renewal of pedagogical practices and the need for reflexivity included the appropriation of learners’ personal devices for learning where their disposition had to be carefully managed in accordance with ethical considerations and their various capabilities. Innovative teachers are powerful change agents within their school environments and in this regard a certain amount of freedom could be offered to innovative teachers to further explore their own practice whilst at the same time tasking them with additional responsibilities in growing organisational capabilities. Regulatory Effects on Traditional Financial Systems Versus Blockchain and Emerging Financial Systems

The expansion of the Internet led to disruptive business and consumer processes, as existing regulations do not cover the scope and scale of emerging financial technologies. Using organization economic theory as the foundation, the purpose of this correlational study was to examine and compare the financial regulatory impact on traditional and emerging financial systems across a variety of factors including organizational type, predicted users, operational concerns, reasons for cost increases, and changes in business practices as a result of the regulatory environment. Data were collected through a survey of 227 adult Americans who engage in the financial sector and are familiar with the US regulatory environment. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, cross tabulations, and statistical significance was tested using Lambda and Kendall's Tau c. The key finding of this study is that the effects of regulations are different for the traditional and emerging financial systems, showing the need to develop and implement policies that are context specific to the emerging financial systems. The recommendations from the study include suggestions to regulatory agencies to regulate and support emerging financial systems in line with new technology that envisions efficiency and economic fairness. The positive social change implications for this study include the development of a strategy that can ensure economic stability, reduce irregularities, and strengthen investments with a view of protecting the financial system from breakdown.

The effects of emerging technologies in rail yards and intermodal terminals

This paper analyzes the effects of emerging technologies in intermodal terminals and marshallingyards, based on “Intelligent Video Gate” project within the H2020 – Shift2Rail initiative. Projectaim is to initiate the next logical step to a higher level of automation in terminals and to reduce thelead-time needed for the identification/verification process of freight trains. Thesis projectexamine different emerging technologies that could be applied in intermodal terminal automationand possibilities for their application in different processes. Technologies considered in researchare RFID, cameras, scanners, sensors, GPS and scales. Marshalling yard as important freight nodeon railway network is included in research, where departing processes are examined, andtechnology proposed for automation of brake test procedures.Qualitative research is used as a method to investigate current processes in intermodal terminaland marshalling yards. This research included all the processes from train arrival to the terminal,through transshipment processes and train departure from the terminal. Research also conducteddifferent steps which Intermodal Transport Units go through during operations in intermodalterminal. Knowing processes enabled next step in qualitative research, finding the opportunitiesfor improvements in operations. Third step in qualitative research investigated different emergingtechnologies and as a result gave opportunities and obstacles behind each of technologies.Complementing findings from qualitative research, model simulation is performed, based onoperations in Malmö Kombiterminal. Intermodal terminal operations are simulated in Planimate®software. Addition to the qualitative research is finding the opportunities for improvements inmarshalling yards and proposing emerging technology that could be applied.Master thesis successfully accomplished the task of finding the effects of emerging technologiesin intermodal terminals and marshalling yards. The methodology concluded to be appropriate onefor building task solution. The project is viewed as a breakthrough in this domain but theexpectations for Intelligent Video Gate should stay realistic and proceeded carefully. Eliminationof brake test in marshalling yards is also very optimistic goal but should be followed by appropriatesafety rules and regulations. Simulation of complex systems such as intermodal terminals andmarshalling yards is the task that should be supported by accurate and detailed data, in order tokeep the model and results more realistic.
