The Effects of Positive Emotion, Negative Emotion, Flourishing, and Languishing on Cardiovascular RiskPurdum, Michael B. 08 1900 (has links)
Positive psychology has led a movement that concentrates on positive characteristics. The current study examined the relationship between positive emotions, negative emotions, flourishing, languishing, and cardiovascular functioning. The study uses guided imagery to help participants recall a negative emotional event and positive emotional event in a counterbalanced order. The reverse order allowed us to examine the differential contributions of stress buffering versus facilitated recovery effects to higher levels of heart rate variability (HRV). The study also examined the relationship between mental health categories and known cardiovascular disease risk. Univariate analysis of variance revealed that positive emotions can serve as a stress buffer and dampen cardiovascular responses to a negative event. Also, analysis revealed a trend for the prediction that positive emotions can facilitate cardiovascular recovery following a negative event. Exploratory analysis did not reveal differences between a facilitated recovery group and a buffering group for cardiovascular measures. Future studies should include tighter control to help compare the differential influences of stress facilitation and stress buffering on cardiovascular functioning. The results from the study indicate that it is still too early to tell whether mental health buffers those individuals from developing CVD, and to answer whether languishing increases the risk of CVD. Longitudinal studies of young individuals without a prior history of any risk of CVD and who are flourishing or languishing might help provide answers to these questions.

Behavioral Expressions of Jealousy Across the First Two Years of Life: Associations with EEG Asymmetry, Cortisol Reactivity and Attachment SecurityUnknown Date (has links)
Jealousy is understood as a system of physiological, behavioral, and emotional
responses, yet few studies have examined these aspects of jealousy simultaneously in
infants. Further, jealousy paradigms have not been examined as a potential stressor in
infancy and thus typical cortisol reactivity and regulation patterns in response to jealousy
paradigms have not been observed. In addition, the contribution of attachment security to
infant expressions of jealousy has been vastly understudied. The present study seeks to
fill the current gaps in the infant jealousy literature by investigating quantitative and
qualitative changes in infant jealousy across the first two years of life. Data was collected
longitudinally and mother- infant dyads were asked to participate when infants were 12-
months and 24-months of age. Associations between behavioral jealousy responses,
baseline EEG activity, stress reactivity and attachment security were examined.
Differences in approach behaviors and behavioral arousal were found across conditions and were consistent with previous studies (Hart & Carrington, 2002; Mize & Jones,
2012). Findings relating to EEG activity pointed to a relationship between left EEG
asymmetry and global approach behaviors across time. Cortisol reactivity was found to
be associated with attachment security but reactive cortisol concentrations compared to
baseline cortisol concentrations do not indicate that the paradigm was an effective
stressor. Attachment security was found to be associated with proximity behaviors in 12-
month olds but not 24-month olds. Finally, a linear regression revealed that attachment
security, EEG asymmetry, and cortisol reactivity at 12-months are significant predictors
of behavioral jealousy responses at 24-months. Changes in behavioral and physiological
measures across time indicate that jealousy continues to develop during the second year
of life but may have different underlying processes than the processes that contribute to

How does emotionality affect memory in children with autism?Meints, Samantha Marie 26 August 2014 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / The purpose of the current study was to investigate the impact of emotionality on the memory of children with an autism spectrum disorder. Although emotional events enhance memory in adults and children without an autism spectrum disorder, there are different memory patterns among individuals on the autism spectrum. Specifically, individuals with autism may show a decreased advantage in memory for emotional content and may have deficits in memory for information that is not presented visually. Currently, however, there are no studies that look at how emotional content affects memory specifically in children with autism. In the current study, children with and without autism were presented with stimuli contrasting emotional and neutral content using one of two modalities, auditory and visual, and then completed memory recognition tasks for the stimuli. Results indicate that children with an autism spectrum disorder did not demonstrate enhanced memory for emotional information. Rather, they were equally able to remember emotional and neutral stimuli. Additionally, individuals on the spectrum demonstrated better memory for visual stimuli compared to their neurotypical peers. These results support the notion that individuals with an autism spectrum disorder may learn and remember material differently than those without the disorder and that educators need to acknowledge these differences as children with autism spectrum disorders continue to be integrated into classroom settings.
