No / A proposed method for cancelling or reducing the effect of the transmitted power within the transceiver MIMO unit is investigated and discussed using a feedback signal process between the elements. Several parameters including the level of feedback power mismatch, the transmitted power and the received power are considered in this work to test the performance of the system in term of the bit error rate (BER) versus signal to noise ratio (SNR). A new software programme using MATLAB is implemented to evaluate the proposed method. The results showed that the performances of the system are heavily dependent on the amount of the transmitted power, the received power, and the mismatch in the feedback component.

<p>In this thesis, we consider a coherent MIMO system, emphasizing on the simplicity of implementation at both the code generator and the receiver. Specifically, we consider the transmission of a space-time block code (STBC) that is a linear combination of coding matrices weighted by the information symbols through a receiver-correlated flat-fading channel and received by a linear ZF detector. Our target is the design of a code which, while maintaining full data-transmission rate, minimizes the asymptotic average (over all the random channel coefficients) bit error probability of an ZF detector. To this end, we first ensure that the full data rate of symbols is maintained, and then, based on the BER for 4-QAM signals, we derive the conditions for optimal codes and establish a code structure that minimizes the asymptotic average bit error probability. We also prove that the diversity gain of our M × N MIMO system is N − M + 1. The resulting optimum code structure requires the individual coding matrices to be mutually orthogonal when vectorized and is related to covariance matrix of correlated channel. The first optimum structural characteristics of the coding matrices is described as trace-orthogonal. A new approach to express expected value of random correlated channel has been proposed as well. From simulation results we can see that advantage of optimum code over uncoded system is more apparent as channel correlation is higher.</p> / Master of Applied Science (MASc)

On Group-Sequential Multiple Testing Controlling Familywise Error Rate

The importance of multiplicity adjustment has gained wide recognition in modern scientific research. Without it, there will be too many spurious results and reproducibility becomes an issue; with it, if overtly conservative, discoveries will be made more difficult. In the current literature on repeated testing of multiple hypotheses, Bonferroni-based methods are still the main vehicle carrying the bulk of multiplicity adjustment. There is room for power improvement by suitably utilizing both hypothesis-wise and analysis- wise dependencies. This research will contribute to the development of a natural group-sequential extension of the classical stepwise multiple testing procedures, such as Dunnett’s stepdown and Hochberg’s step-up procedures. It is shown that the proposed group-sequential procedures strongly control the familywise error rate while being more powerful than the recently developed class of group-sequential Bonferroni-Holm’s procedures. Particularly in this research, a convexity property is discovered for the distribution of the maxima of pairwise null P-values with the underlying test statistics having distributions such as bivariate normal, t, Gamma, F, or Archimedean copulas. Such property renders itself for an immediate use in improving Holm’s procedure by incorporating pairwise dependencies of P-values. The improved Holm’s procedure, as all stepdown multiple testing procedures, can also be naturally extended to group-sequential setting. / Statistics

Robust Distributed Compression of Symmetrically Correlated Gaussian Sources

Consider a lossy compression system with l distributed encoders and a centralized decoder. Each encoder compresses its observed source and forwards the compressed data to the decoder for joint reconstruction of the target signals under the mean squared error distortion constraint. It is assumed that the observed sources can be expressed as the sum of the target signals and the corruptive noises, which are generated independently from two (possibly di erent) symmetric multivariate Gaussian distributions. Depending on the parameters of such Gaussian distributions, the rate-distortion limit of this lossy compression system is characterized either completely or for a subset of distortions (including, but not necessarily limited to, those su fficiently close to the minimum distortion achievable when the observed sources are directly available at the decoder). The results are further extended to the robust distributed compression setting, where the outputs of a subset of encoders may also be used to produce a non-trivial reconstruction of the corresponding target signals. In particular, we obtain in the high-resolution regime a precise characterization of the minimum achievable reconstruction distortion based on the outputs of k + 1 or more encoders when every k out of all l encoders are operated collectively in the same mode that is greedy in the sense of minimizing the distortion incurred by the reconstruction of the corresponding k target signals with respect to the average rate of these k encoders. / Thesis / Master of Applied Science (MASc)
