Exploring the practice of quality control in the onscreen marking of ordinary level Biology in Zimbabwe

Masiri, Ebba 02 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore the practice of quality control in the onscreen marking (OSM) environment of Biology (5008) examinations between 2013 and 2017. Examination marking is gradually being migrating from paper-based marking (PBM) to OSM in a bid to improve the efficiency and quality of marking. The Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) introduced OSM for some O Level subjects in June 2012, in a context characterised by a persistent economic crisis, patchy internet coverage, erratic power supplies and low digital literacy, among other challenges. The Council encountered some difficulties related to quality control, which triggered this qualitative instrumental single case study that was informed by the ontology, epistemology, methods and axiology of the constructivist philosophy. Data were collected through face-to-face and focus group interviews on the WhatsApp platform with 4 subject managers, 11 senior markers and 18 normal markers, and through document review. The findings of the study suggest that the quality of marking was influenced by the context in which the examinations were marked. The socio-political climate that prevailed in Zimbabwe impacted on the technological infrastructure for the OSM and the digital literacy of the examination personnel. The capacity of the examiners to work in the OSM environment was influenced by knowledge and skills transfer from training and standardisation to the live marking. The quality of marking was monitored by the seeds approach to script moderation, automatically generated reports and audit trails, and escalation of problem scripts. It was also influenced by the structure of the question papers, cognitive demands of the questions and mark schemes on the examiners, spaces provided for candidates’ responses and mark scheme features such as language and marks to marking points ratio. The assessment framework provided by the syllabus guided the design and marking of Biology examinations. From these findings, a framework that could guide the practice of quality control in the OSM environment was formulated. OSM technology could enhance the quality of marking Biology examinations, thereby eliminating challenges associated with PBM. Some of the opportunities were, however, reduced by the challenges encountered during the OSM of the examinations. It is recommended that ZIMSEC put in place policies and procedures that could guide specific quality control activities in the OSM environment and establish computer centres in the provincial capital towns. The Council could also consider benchmarking examiner recruitment, training and standardisation procedures with international examination authorities. / Tsvakurudzo ino yanga yakananga kuvandudza nharaunda yemakwenyero ebvunzo kubudikidza nemichina pachidzidzo cheBhayaroji, 5008 pakati pemakore a2013-2017. Characterisation and static behaviour of the DMLS Ti-6AI-4V for Bio-medical applications

Ramosoeu, Makhabo Khabiso Ellen January 2015 (has links)
Thesis (M. Tech. (Engineering: Mechanical)) -- Central University of Technology, Free State, / The Centre for Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing (CRPM) at the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) manufactures implants using Electro Optical Systems (EOS) titanium Ti-6Al-4V alloy powder (further referred to as EOS Ti64 powder) by means of Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) process on the EOSINT M 270 machine. For this reason, there is a need to characterise and acquire knowledge of the basic properties of direct metal laser sintered EOS titanium Ti-6Al-4V alloy samples (further referred to as DMLS Ti64 samples) under static tensile loading in order to provide the CRPM with engineering design data. The first objective of this Master’s study is to acquire the characteristics of EOS Ti64 powder in order to ascertain its suitability in the DMLS process. Secondly, the study aims to assess tensile properties and elastic constants of DMLS Ti64 samples produced from the set process parameters of EOSINT M 270 machine. Thirdly, it is to investigate microstructures of DMLS Ti64 samples subjected to different heat treatment techniques which will eventually assist in the determination of a suitable heat treatment technique that will yield higher ductility. Finally, the study aims to validate the static behaviour of DMLS Ti64 samples subjected to the static tensile loading up to a yield point in order to determine failure due to yielding. The samples were manufactured at CRPM Bloemfontein. The metallographic examinations, heat treatment and the determination of mechanical properties were done at the CSIR in Pretoria. Optical Microscope (OM) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) were used to determine microstructures of DMLS Ti64 samples while Energy Dispersive X-Ray (EDX) analyses were performed using SEM. The samples were heat treated at temperatures of 700, 1000 and 1100°C respectively, and subsequently either cooled with the furnace, air or were water quenched. The mechanical property tests included tensile, hardness and determination of elastic constants. The static behaviour of DMLS Ti64 samples under static tensile load up to a yield point was predicted and verified using ABAQUSTM Finite Element Analysis (FEA). The stress-strain curves from ABAQUSTM were interpreted using MDSolid program. The point of interest was Von Mises yield stress at 0.2% offset, in order to determine failure due to yielding. EOS Ti64 powder particles were spherical in shape and the alpha and alpha+beta phases were identified. As-laser sintered samples possess a very fine and uniform alpha case with islands of martensitic plates; samples were brittle and showed low levels of ductility with an average elongation of 2.6% and an area reduction of 3.51%. Ultrasonic test results showed that DMLS Ti64 samples have Young’s modulus of 115 GPa, Shear modulus of 43 GP, a bulk modulus of 109 GPa and Poisson’s ratio of 0,323 while the density was 4.4 g/cm3. Slow cooling of DMLS Ti64 samples from 1000 and 1100oC resulted in a microstructure constituted more by the alpha phase of lower hardness than those from 700oC and as-laser sintered samples. High hardness was obtained by water quenching. The water quenched samples showed martensitic transformation and high hardness when compared to furnace cooled samples. Beta annealing tailored a microstructure of as-laser sintered samples into a lamellar structure with different lath sizes as per cooling rate. Beta annealing improved ductility levels up to 12.67% elongation for samples furnace cooled for 4 hours and even higher to 18.11% for samples furnace cooled for 34 hours, while area reduction increased to 25.94% and 33.39%, respectively. Beta annealing conversely reduced yield strength by 19.89% and ultimate tensile strength was reduced by 23.66%. The calculated maximum Von Mises stresses found were similar to the FEA interpreted results. The average percentage error, without the stress concentration factor, was approximately 8.29%; with the stress concentration factor included, it was 0.07%. The small reaction forces induced in both x-axis and z-axis contributed to this error of 0.07% between the calculations and ABAQUSTM FEA results. Samples that were not heat treated fell outside the Von Mises criterion and failed due to yielding. This justified the brittleness found in the tensile test results where elongation and area reduction were 2.6% and 3.51% respectively. However, all samples that were heat treated fell within the Von Mises criterion. The objectives of this study were achieved; the mechanical properties were similar to those of standard specification for wrought annealed Ti-6Al-4V alloy for surgical implant applications and EOS GmbH manufacturer’s material data sheet. DMLS Ti64 samples must be beta annealed in order to attain higher levels of ductility. A recommendation was made to further investigate the effect of heat treatment on the other mechanical properties. Furthermore, detailed results of basic properties of DMLS Ti64 samples are provided in the appendices in chart format and were written on a CD disc.

Factors influencing patients' demand for x-ray examinations in rural Kwa-Zulu Natal

Mungomba, Bernard 02 1900 (has links)
The focus of this study was on the problem of unwarranted demand for radiological imaging by patients in rural KZN of South Africa. Literature in the context of this topic is scarce. Consequently the aim of this study was to describe sociodemographic factors that might influence patients demand for x-ray examinations. A quantitative in the form of a cross sectional survey was done. A convenient sample of 110 patients was surveyed using a structured questionnaire. Results of the study indicate that age, and educational level might influence patients’ demand for x-ray examinations. The study also revealed that very few respondents 10.9% (n=12) had knowledge about x-rays. The study further revealed that there might be other factors such as patients’ perceived benefits of x-rays, beliefs, lack of public health awareness as well as lack of effective communication between patients and health care providers. / Health Studies / M.A. (Public Health)

An investigation into factors that contribute to cheating in examinations in technical institutions in Central Province, Kenya

Muchai, Jemimah 02 1900 (has links)
Cheating in an examination is an act of deception by students to gain unfair advantage over others by using unauthorized materials and information. There is a significant increase in test cheating, unpermitted student collaboration and an increased prevalence of chronic cheating (The Standard, 9th March 2012). Among those who cheat are students in technical institutions, where there is recurrence of cheating in the internal examinations. Some studies identify factors such as the following, that contribute to cheating: students learning from a dishonest society (Marks, 2003:135), poor teaching, poor learning environment and lack of facilities (Korbs,2009:2), an education system that is concerned about performance, poor time management (Carrol, 2006), lack of effective study habits (Chinamase et al. 2011) and technology (Marks, 2003). However, there is no readily available information on factors that contribute to cheating in technical institutions. The purpose of this study was to investigate factors that contribute to cheating in internal examinations, methods used in cheating and reasons for students to cheat; and the main aim was to devise and recommend strategies that can be applied to curb cheating in examinations in technical institutions in Central Province, Kenya. The 22 study participants (n=22) were selected from two technical institutions in Central, Kenya. The participating institutions were purposively selected and from them the participants were randomly selected. The participants comprised of 16 students who had either cheated or knew some students who had cheated in examinations, 4 lecturers who were directly involved in examination administration and 2 examination officers who provided documents collected previously on cheating. A qualitative case study was used to collect data. The data was collected using observation method, structured interviews and document analysis. The data collected through interviews were then transcribed and grouped into categories guided by research questions and reviewed literature. The results of the study show several factors that contribute to cheating. These are: contextual factors such as class attendance, lecturer-student interactions, poor invigilation, and lack of adequate facilities. The participants raised the following suggestions on how cheating may be curbed: strict supervision of examination, provision of adequate facilities, and frequent administration of tests and assignment. Recommendations on measures to be applied were presented along with suggestions for further research in this area. / Educational Leadership and Management / M. Ed. (Education Management)

Integration magnetresonanztomographischer und computertomographischer Daten mit isotropen Voxeln in die Protonenbestrahlungsplanung bei okularen Tumoren

Lemke, Arne-Jörn 12 November 2001 (has links)
The radiation therapy of uveal melanomas using proton therapy is a very precise therapy procedure, that makes high demands on the underlying imaging modalities. In general magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) have the potential to fulfill these criteria using suited surface coils and optimized imaging techniques, respectively. Purpose of the investigations was the preparation and evaluation of an imaging system, that allows diagnosis and differetial diagnosis of uveal melanomas including staging on the one hand. On the other hand it should be the base for high precision radiation therapy planning. The preparation of images with isotropic voxels, i.e. the edges of the voxels have identical size, is desirable with both magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT). Several examinations on large patient groups were performed for the differentiation of different tumor entities and compared with clinical and histopathological outcome. The precision of the MR-based tumor volumetry was evaluated with animal studies in vitro and patient eyes in vivo. The MR-imaging with isotropic voxels was evaluated using several surface coils and phantom examinations. Comparable examinations were performed regarding CT. Digital image fusion of CT and MRI data sets was used to evaluate the precision of both modalities and for planning of radiation therapy. Using optimized examination techniques both CT and especially MRI are suitable for a precise proton therapy planning of uveal melanoma.

A perícia forense no Brasil. / Forensic expertise in Brazil.

Silva, Alexandre Alberto Gonçalves da 16 December 2009 (has links)
This work presents a look at the forensic activity starting in ancient Egypt, the cradle of Western civilization, through the Portuguese colonization and their influence, until getting to Brazil nowadays, with the aim to bring the characteristic elements of interdisciplinary expertise in every historical period. Given its interdisciplinary character, this essay attempts to point which legislative bases had experts to carry out their activities. The aim was to identify the elements which analyzed the problems that have arisen over time to the exercise of skill as an activity assistant, as well as to highlight areas that may assist the improvement of the activity for forensics, judges and parties, as well as the final result of his work: the expert report.
