Fonseca, Donizeti Aparecido Lopes 09 May 2014 (has links)
The orchestral production of Villa-Lobos is certainly grand and lush. It is confronting us musicians in a technical and interpretive challenges order. This doctoral essay will discuss some of the parts composed for low brass and their possible technical solutions. It was chose eight symphonic pieces in order to major measure a reasonable sample of the compositional facet of Villa-Lobos. Interpretation suggestions are based on solid analysis from autograph and their issues, visualized by means of excerpts from the orchestral and supported by an updated literature review parts, proposing to seek a greater understanding of the expressive tools offered to low brass musician and inserting them inside of the villalobiana´s dialectic.

The context and the specificities of the Villa-Lobos’ treatment to the double bass in his orchestral works are the main object of the investigation hereby presented. The main goal is to discuss the idiomatic approach to the double bass on Villa-Lobos’ orchestral works as a way to present the thesis that the excerpts of such orchestral works are relevant to the technique musical study of the performer, as well as localizing and indicating its pertinence to double bass performers, professors and students. The methodology chosen was the review of the literature followed by an identification of idiomatic equivalences from the traditional orchestral repertoire, the contextualization of Villa-Lobos’ influences on its double bass writing and the selection of excerpts. The thesis is organized in three chapters, besides the introduction, conclusion and appendixes. The first chapter presents the review of the literature on orchestral excerpts for the double bass where today state of the art in Brazilians institutions is presented. The discussion is centered in the lack of material addressed to the studies of Brasilian orchestral works. The second chapter addresses the influences Villa-Lobos received while writing his double bass parts. Here idiomatic aspects of the composers writing for the instrument are described as well as a selection of works that better illustrate such writing and his symphonies, the Choros 10 and the Bachianas 9 are emphasized. The third chapter presents a excerpts selection for the double bass extracted from the works mentioned on chapter two, with emphasis on passages relevant for the technical study of the performer organized by type of idiomatism. The criteria for the selection of excerpts are also presented. At the end of this work it is possible to state that the composer had an elaborated and idiomatic writing for the double bass treating it with respect for its low range nature, its melodic potential, and its function as a rhythmic and harmonic support instrument in Villa-Lobos orchestral works. Villa-Lobos not only proposed new sonorities for the instrument but his bass parts also offer a material that deserves to be included in lists of orchestral excerpts addressed to preparatory studies for the double bassist professionalization, particularly in Brazil.

Music as a Woven Narrative to an Absurd Tale in Act One of The Metamorphosis

Poovey, Christopher, 1993- 05 1900 (has links)
Act one of The Metamorphosis is based on the novella by Franza Kafka of the same title. In the writing of the act, George Benjamin's Into the Little Hill and Oliver Knussen's Where the Wild Things Are provide a model of using musical material as a storytelling device. Benjamin emphasizes the parallel nature of Crimp's text through the manipulation of similar music between the acts. Knussen uses form and color to emphasize Max's childlike energy and his desire to return home. In act one of The Metamorphosis these approaches are combined to enhance Kafka's absurd narrative through a rapid collage of texture and form that is influenced by both events and characters in the opera.

Structural analysis and segmentation of music signals

Ong, Bee Suan 21 February 2007 (has links)
With the recent explosion in the quantity of digital audio libraries and databases, contentdescriptions play an important role in efficiently managing and retrieving audio files. This doctoral research aims to discover and extract structural description frompolyphonic music signals. As repetition and transformations of music structure creates aunique identity of music itself, extracting such information can link low-level and higherleveldescriptions of music signal and provide better quality access plus powerful way ofinteracting with audio content. Finding appropriate boundary truncations is indispensablein certain content-based applications. Thus, temporal audio segmentation at the semanticlevel and the identification of representative excerpts from music audio signal are alsoinvestigated. We make use of higher-level analysis technique for better segmenttruncation. From both theoretical and practical points of view, this research not onlyhelps in increasing our knowledge of music structure but also facilitates in time-savingbrowsing and assessing of music.

This work aims to investigate technical and interpretative aspects present in orchestral violin excerpts and to study the potential of its use as a tool for the violinist`s development. In the first chapter, we broached the material survey, in which information was sought about violin orchestral excerpts, with respect both to its use in orchestral auditions as well as in the technical and stylistic aspects regarding their preparation and execution. In addition to usual academic material - such as dissertations, theses and articles - it has been found extensive reference in websites, blogs, video lessons and other means, with substantial content released on the Internet. The paper also presents the criteria that guided the choice of excerpts investigated in the following chapter. In the second chapter technical and interpretative aspects of each significant excerpt chosen are scrutinized and suggestions are made for possible interpretative approaches to these excerpts. Finally, in the third chapter, we try to establish a parallel between aspects present in the traditional violin repertoire and orchestral excerpts investigated. The association between the material studied in Chapter 2 and works such as sonatas and concerts, usually studied by violinists, are rich and it highlights the exploration of possibilities of orchestral excerpts as a mean of learning the instrument. This study is aimed at violin students at the undergraduate level and, more broadly, for violinists who are interested in delving into the subject of orchestral excerpts for violin, including as support for preparation for orchestral auditions.

Elektronické knihy na VŠE / Electronic books at VŠE

Saska, Filip January 2012 (has links)
The master dissertation Electronic books at VSE is focused on analysing the opportunities of e-books in the environment of VSE. The aim is to describe the current state of different study materials used at VSE and to explore different ways of improving them using e-book technology. The dissertation briefly describes various attributes of e-books with stress on the relevant attributes -- the possibility of inserting notes, bookmarks, multimedia and interactive content. Also the possibility of editing the content and sharing resulting changes with other students is a key attribute. The dissertation then moves on to describe the different kinds of study materials that are in use at VSE. The second half of the dissertation builds on previous analysis of the study materials and introduces a hypothetical optimal state, which could result from implementing e-book technology. This state is the answers the question of what is actually possible to achieve. The next chapter in this half is the technical analysis, which answers the question of how is it possible to achieve the suggested hypothetical state. The conclusion of this dissertation answers the questions whether the proposed solution is a viable candidate for implementation. The results of this dissertation could be used as a guideline for the project of implementation of e-book technology in the environment of VSE.

Cole Porter : the social significance of selected love lyrics of the 1930s

Holloway, Marilyn June 11 1900 (has links)
This dissertation examines selected love lyrics composed during the 1930s by Cole Porter, whose witty and urbane music epitomized the Golden era of American light music. These lyrics present an interesting paradox – a man who longed for his music to be accepted by the American public, yet remained indifferent to the social mores of the time. Porter offered trenchant social commentary aimed at a society restricted by social taboos and cultural conventions. The argument develops systematically through a chronological and contextual study of the influences of people and events on a man and his music. The prosodic intonation and imagistic texture of the lyrics demonstrate an intimate correlation between personality and composition which, in turn, is supported by the biographical content. / English / M.A. (English)
