Automated Classification of Emotions Using Song LyricsSchellenberg, Rajitha 12 1900 (has links)
This thesis explores the classification of emotions in song lyrics, using automatic approaches applied to a novel corpus of 100 popular songs. I use crowd sourcing via Amazon Mechanical Turk to collect line-level emotions annotations for this collection of song lyrics. I then build classifiers that rely on textual features to automatically identify the presence of one or more of the following six Ekman emotions: anger, disgust, fear, joy, sadness and surprise. I compare different classification systems and evaluate the performance of the automatic systems against the manual annotations. I also introduce a system that uses data collected from the social network Twitter. I use the Twitter API to collect a large corpus of tweets manually labeled by their authors for one of the six emotions of interest. I then compare the classification of emotions obtained when training on data automatically collected from Twitter versus data obtained through crowd sourced annotations.

The People's Poets: Literature Born of the Texas Singer-Songwriter Movement of the Last Forty YearsDunham, Phyllis M 13 May 2016 (has links)
The People’s Poets of Texas: Literature Born Within the Singer/Songwriter Tradition of the Last Forty Years is a creative nonfiction exploration of the poetry found within the songs of multiple generations of modern Texas singer/songwriters and a case for the consideration of their work as a genuine regional literature. Studying the roots of Texas music, the musicality of Texan manners of speech and storytelling, and re-examining the Austin, Texas music scene of the 1970s that brought a national focus to the organic, reciprocal manner in which Texas music is traditionally experienced, radically altered the ways in which the songs were written, recorded, and marketed. An examination of this phenomenon allows us to understand that, first, a proliferation of Texas singer/songwriters of unprecedented quality has emerged in recent decades and that, second, a legitimate people's literature is emerging from their song-craft.

“One More Drinkin’ Song”: A Longitudinal Content Analysis of Country Music Lyrics Between the Years 1994 and 2013Evans, Keith McKay 01 July 2014 (has links) (PDF)
The lyrical content of pop music has rarely been studied, particularly for country music. The lyrics of the top 50 country songs for each year between 1994 and 2013 were coded for violent, sexual and substance use-related content. Violence had increased, as had sexual references, substance use, and substance use associated with sexual activity. Of particular note is the frequency of references to alcohol; 21% of the 1,000-song sampling frame contained alcoholic references, and the average for the final five-year period (2009-2013) was 1.01 references per song. This research should serve as a springboard into further studies about the lyrical content of pop songs as well as longitudinal changes.

Next stop is Vietnam! : En analys av historiebruk i låttexter om Vietnamkriget / Next stop is Vietnam! : An analysis of the use of history in Vietnam War song lyricsNilsson, Simon January 2016 (has links)
The war in Vietnam was a conflict that happened during the Cold War. In the 1960s USA chose to join the war with the hope of stopping the spread of Communism. The war did not go as planned; instead the outcome was that the Americans lost. During and after the war in Vietnam several songs have been made. Some as protest of the war, others the opposite and had a positive attitude about USA and their participation in the war. In this thesis seven songs regarding the war in Vietnam have been analyzed. The aim of the thesis was to investigate the use of history in different lyrics about the war in Vietnam. An oriented interpretation textual analysis has been applied to the content. The theoretical part of the thesis that was chosen is the use of history as a theory. The theory of the thesis is based on Klas-Göran Karlsson’s typology where he list Scientific, Existential, Morally, Ideological, Non-use, Political-pedagogical and Commercial use of history. To search for the answer in how the artists applied a use of history, the typology of Karlsson and also added Robert Thorp’s four different ways which are Traditional, Exemplary, Critical and Genetic. The result of the thesis was that the war in Vietnam does not appear as clearly in the earlier songs as it did in the songs from the 1980s. Regarding the use of history the result showed that the songs apply the use of history in different ways to state their message.

Hur börjar nästa vers? : En självobservationsstudie i memorering av sångtext ur ett hermeneutiskt perspektiv / How does the next verse begin? : A self-observation study of memorizing song lyrics from a hermeneutic perspectivePaulsson Karlsson, Sandra January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this self study was born out of an assumption I have made of myself, that I find it difficult to learn song lyrics by heart and perform them by heart. From a hermeneutic perspective the study takes a deep dive into my learning process whilst learning song lyrics. The study is documented by video and logbook writing, where I learn two songs by heart. The analysis results are summarized in four themes based on my research questions: strengths in the rehearsal process, interpreted as empathy of the text where I create inner pictures and stories, and weaknesses in the rehearsal process, interpreted as practice strategy and playing the piano, as well as a comparison between using pre-recorded music or not, a comparison focusing on the purpose of pre-recorded music and its consequences for me; consequently that the pre-recorded music was used as a confirmation for correct pronunciation of the lyrics. The discussion debates the interpretation of the results against the background literature and previous research.

This paper reflects on the discursive genre "Song lyrics" and proposes its use in Portuguese Language classes in order to contribute to the formation of critical and independent readers, as recommended by the Curricular Guidelines for High School (OCEM). The reflections and analysis were anchored in the enunciative-discursive theory of socio-historical approach of BAKHTIN ([1929] 2004) and the Circle. To situate the genre Song lyrics within Bakhtinian theory, as a poetic genre of discourse, we started from the concepts of Padilha (2005). Low levels of reading performance of Brazilian students in evaluative events like Prova Brasil and PISA indicate the need to reevaluate the teaching of reading and the importance of proposals involving new approaches for the texts that are brought into the classrooms. The proposals presented in this dissertation attempt to meet these needs and are organized according to the guidelines of OCEM on reading. The work here suggested of analysis of song lyrics in the classroom, trying to visualize the structure, the ideological traces, the conditions of production and the communicative intention in the text, was designated as pathways in reading.
