The Sharing Economy and Discrimination : Evidence from a Field Experiment in Sweden

Farrahi, Nima January 2019 (has links)
To investigate whether there is unequal treatment for ethnic minorities in the sharing economy this paper conducts a field experiment on Airbnb in Sweden. The key findings report that inquiries from guests with Arabic-sounding names are 17 percentage points less likely to receive a booking invitation compared to guests with Swedish-sounding names. The discrimination is robust across host and listing characteristics. Furthermore, the results show that being associated with a lower social class decreases the probability of receiving a booking invitation for guests with Arabic-sounding names but not for guests with Swedish-sounding names, suggesting that the signal of social class is stronger for guests with Arabic-sounding names.

Étude numérique et expérimentale du comportement d'étanchéité des joints sans contact à rainures hélicoïdales / Numerical and experimental study of the sealing behavior of viscoseals

Jarray, Mohamed 03 December 2018 (has links)
Contactless seals are optimal sealing solution for mechanical systems operating with relatively high speeds. They have an important operation life time, and they were proposed for use in space engines. One sub-category of non-contact seals, the viscoseal, is studied in detail in this work through a numerical and experimental analysis. This work presents a numerical model developed to predict the viscoseal performance in laminar and turbulent regime. Furthermore the sealing performance of the viscoseal is investigated for different geometrical characteristics of the seal. The interface liquid-air in the seal is also studied using a CFD approach based on VOF method. The design and installation of an experimental device allowed the comparison of the numerical and experimental results, the difference between the two does not exceed 10% for 95% of studied cases.

Etude des bases (épi) génétiques de l'adaptation dans une expérience de sélection divergente pour la précocité de floraison chez le maïs / (Epi)-genetic basis of adaptation in a divergent selection experiment for flowering time in maize inbred lines

Durand, Eléonore 10 June 2011 (has links)
Quantitative variation results from the combined action of multiple genes and their environment. Two approaches are currently employed to gain insights into the link between genotype and phenotype and to dissect the genetic architecture of complex traits. On one hand, experimental evolution allows quantifying the number of mutations and their effect on the evolution of a phenotype subject to artificial selection. On the other hand, QTL (Quantitative Trait Locus) and association mapping are used to identify loci responsible for phenotypic variation. In this work, we have combined all 3 approaches in order to (1) evaluate the role of new mutations and standing genetic variation to the response to selection ; (2) to identify the genetic determinants underlying this response ; (3) to dissect at one candidate locus the genetic mechanisms of its contribution to phenotypic variation. We have used the material produced by a divergent selection experiment for flowering time conducted for over 10 years in the field. This experiment was conducted in parallel from two commercial maize inbred line, F252 and MBS847. From each initial seed lot, two populations, an early population and a late population, were created by selecting and selfing the earliest/latest individuals at each generation. We characterized the response to selection after 7 generations. The response was fast, asymmetric between populations and significant in 3 out of 4 populations. It was linear through time indicating that new mutations have generated new additive genetic variance at each generation. We identified a major locus contributing to 35% of the variation for flowering time in the late F252 population. At this locus, two alleles were present as residual heterozygocity in the initial seed lot. The two alleles exhibited haplotypes extending on a region around the eIF-4A (Eukaryotic Initiation Translation Factor 4A) that diverged drastically both at the nucleotide (5.7%) and structural level. We were able to confirm the association of the candidate locus to flowering time variation and other traits such as height and leaf number, first using an association panel containing 317 maize lines, second through the developmental characterization of early and late genotypes. In addition, to its pleiotropic effect, we have shown by developing a specific statistical framework that this locus exhibit pervasive epistatic interactions with other loci segregating in the population. Hence, its effect largely depended on the genetic background. We have finally applied methyl-sensitive AFLP (Amplified Frgament length Polymorphisms) to screen all genotypes in order to identify the polymorphisms potentially involved in the response to selection during the first 7 generations Our preliminary results indicate both a genetic and epigenetic differentiation between early and late populations. This differentiation seems however to be mainly driven by standing genetic variation.

Prevention of household food waste : An experimental study of the effects of awareness on consumer behaviour

Maldonado Juarez, Jhonattan, Jara Nilsson, Sebastián January 2019 (has links)
Background. The production of food requires great amounts of natural resources. Although, not all the food produced is consumed. Food waste is a global issue with the potential to create resource scarcity for future generations. Preventing food waste is an effective approach to avoid this outcome. Moreover, the prevention of food waste could decrease the environmental human print and balance the access to food around the world. In developed countries, the households contribute in a significant amount to the food waste problem.. It is mainly attributed to the behaviours that the consumers develop consciously and unconsciously. Therefore, it is significant to research further in the implications of awareness in the behaviours linked to food waste. Aspiration. The following research aims to find the effect of awareness in the consumer behaviours linked to food waste in the household through an experiment.    Method. A survey with 52 respondents was used to sample the participants of the experiment. From the respondents, 12 young adults aged between 18 to 29 years old, living by themselves in Visby, Sweden participated in the experimental study. The participants of the experiment were divided in two groups, the experimental and the control group. A treatment, consisting of an educational video regarding prevention of household food waste, was provided to the experimental group. The experiment measures how the participants were affected by the treatment.  Key findings. Regarding the awareness of household food waste, the experimental group had a significant improvement compared to the control group after the treatment. This proves that the consumers whose awareness of household food waste is increased present a higher potential to have their behaviours changed thus reducing household food waste. The hypothesis was proven, while the main finding indicates that as consumer advanced in the experiment the reported behaviours change considerably. While it was expected that the self-reporting of household food waste in the participants would be reduced, in fact, this incremented in some cases.

Salience of Inherited Wealth and the Support for Inheritance Taxation

Bastani, Spencer, Waldenström, Daniel 21 June 2019 (has links) (PDF)
We study how attitudes to inheritance taxation are influenced by information about the role of inherited wealth in society. Using a randomized experiment in a register-linked Swedish survey, we find that informing individuals about the large aggregate importance of inherited wealth and its link to inequality of opportunity significantly increases the support for inheritance taxation. The effect is almost uniform across socio-economic groups and survives a battery of robustness tests. Changes in the perceived economic importance of inherited wealth and altered views on whether luck matters most for economic success appear to be the main driving factors behind the treatment effect. Our findings suggest that the low salience of inherited wealth could be one explanation behind the relatively marginalized role of inheritance taxation in developed economies. / Series: INEQ Working Paper Series

BY GEOSYNTHETICS ABOVE CAVITIES : Laboratory experiments and numerical modeling of load transfer mechanisms

Pham, Minh Tuan 04 April 2019 (has links)
The progressive development of the territory leads to the exploitation of new areas, which are currently being abandoned because they come up risks to the safety of users. This is particularly the case for areas of potential collapse that are related to the presence of underground cavities. Among the many preventative solutions, geosynthetic reinforcement prevents localized collapse. This solution is widely used for both its economic and environmental benefits, as well as for its ease and speed of setting up. However, the existing design methods for granular platforms reinforced by geosynthetic are based on various simplifying assumptions and do not take the complexity of the problem into account. These methods do not consider, for example, the influence of how the cavity is opened, the expansion of granular soil above the cavity, or the stress distribution on the geosynthetic after opening the cavity. The present study tries to improve the design methods by analyzing mechanisms developed inside the reinforced granular platform on the basis of an experimental study coupled with numerical simulations. An experimental device was developed to simulate the opening of a cavity under a platform reinforced by geosynthetic. This device allows simulating two types of opening: a trapdoor or a concentric opening, for various heights of platforms. The mechanisms are studied by measuring the deflection of the geosynthetic, the settlement at the surface and the stress distribution applied of the geosynthetic. A finite element model was calibrated on the experimental results then used to analyze mechanisms finely for many configurations. This experimental and numerical study allows improving the understanding of the stress distribution, the soil expansion above the cavity and experimentally validated the influence of the opening mode on the mechanisms. Based on these results, proposals are formulated to improve the design of geosynthetic-reinforced platforms subject to localized collapse.

Myopic and Farsighted Stability in Network Formation Games: An Experimental Study

Teteryatnikova, Mariya, Tremewan, James January 2019 (has links) (PDF)
We test the performance of myopic and farsighted stability concepts in a network formation experiment with a stream of payoffs and relatively unstructured link formation process. A subtle treatment variation demonstrates clearly the power of myopic stability concepts in precisely identifying the set of the most stable networks. However, we also find support for the predictions of farsighted concepts of stability, especially those that assume players' pessimism about the eventual outcome of a deviation. This is the first study to demonstrate that there exist environments where farsighted stability concepts identify empirically stable networks that are not identified by myopic concepts. Thus, myopic stability concepts are not necessarily sufficient to predict all stable outcomes in empirical applications.

Kiouranis, Neide Maria Michellan. January 2009 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: This research is the result of the development of a didactic sequence on the behavior of physical entities: particle, wave and wave-particle in the Double-Slit Experiment, in an adapted version from Feynman and assistants, which was developed with university students from the third grade of the Chemistry course, in the discipline of Quantum Chemistry, at a Brazilian public state university. The study aimed to discuss the fundaments and practices of thought experiments by using several didactic alternatives and its unfoldings to the teaching of scientific disciplines. The research, of qualitative basis, is anchored to the fundaments of thought experiments grounded on theories aiming to promote verbal and written communication of scientific knowledge. The research problem focuses on the difficulties that the students show in the classroom in order to explain and discuss their ideas when theses require that they master verbalization of scientific knowledge on the double-slit experiment in a meaningful, significant and dynamic manner. To the purpose of data interpretation and analysis, we used the interpretative perspective by means of the methodological and theoretical. Results revealed that the didactic procedures used are relevant since they allow problematization, discussion, the use of imagination and of verbal and written language, quite rare in classroom contexts of Quantum Chemistry. Regarding the texts, both the ones transcribed during the discussions and the students' speeches and those produced during the development of the research, required by the teacher, deserve attention. The text productions were found considerably reduced, fragmented, lacking progression and continuity of ideas, and also lacking the interconnected sequence of the parts that constitute an articulated whole. By means of discourse analysis, we detected loss of the line of unity that assures its interpretability... Hedonic and utilitarian purchases and construal level theory in the perception of justice and price fairness: behavioral and physiological perspectives / Compra hedônica utilitária e construal level theory na percepção de justiça e de justiça de preço: perspectivas comportamentais e fisiológicas

Isabella, Giuliana 06 July 2015 (has links)
Consumers make purchasing decisions every day. Among their purchases, consumers shop for hedonic and utilitarian products. In general, hedonic consumption is related to fun, pleasure, excitement, fantasy, experimental situations, or sensual pleasure. On the other hand, utilitarian consumption is related to instrumental and functional needs or products. Studies in psychology have shown that the information processes used to understand words and pictures are different. Since marketing researchers employ both types of stimuli, it is necessary to test how different stimuli can influence consumer behavior. Therefore, this study verified the influence of hedonic and utilitarian purchases and presentation types (pictures versus words) on consumers\' perceptions of justice and price fairness based on anger as a mediators and construal level theory. Because discriminatory pricing is a widely employed market practice, it was used the price changing (increasing or decreasing) contexts in the studies to manipulate perception of justice and price fairness. Based on that, ten hypotheses were developed and divided into sub items, which were tested with behavioral or physiological studies. The physiological data were collected by an electrocardiogram, electrodermal, and electromyography. The data analyses were done with analyses of variance (ANOVA), analyses of covariance (ANCOVA), and generalized estimation equations (GEE). The main result was that in picture presentations (low construal level), when consumers pay more than others to purchase utilitarian products, they perceive the situation as less just and more price unfairness compared to when the product is hedonic. In a word presentation (high construal level), the perceptions of justice, price fairness, perception of value, and the intention to repurchase are lower with the presentation of utilitarian products compared to hedonic products. In terms of physiological analyses, attention, arousal, and valence were tested to compare the product and presentation types. This study is relevant to marketing theory, as many academics utilize words and pictures as stimuli, but few address the differences due to representation types. By studying different products, such as hedonic and utilitarian, and using consumers\' affective and rational properties, it was found that the anger evoked in consumers by products are mediators in price fairness perception. This dissertation also contributes to understanding product evaluations in post-purchase situations, as opposed to during the choice process, which is found in the literature most often. For practitioners, this study makes important contributions by showing that the way a product is exposed (with words or pictures) influences the perception of justice when consumers realize that discriminatory pricing is being practiced.

Potencializando os efeitos do goal priming: um estudo experimental sobre a influência de diet reminders e activity equivalent labels na redução do consumo calórico / Enhancing goal priming effects: an experimental study of the influences of diet reminders and activity equivalent labells on calories consumption reduction

Kusters, Daniel 08 November 2016 (has links)
There is a common understanding that ample availability of high caloric food contributes to an increase in excessive weight and obesity among populations. Considered an epidemic by the World Health Organization (WHO), this health issue has caught the attention of governments and led to the creation of global aims to fight the problem. Excessive weight and obesity not only represent social issues, but also affect individual well-being. Multidisciplinary research in psychology, consumer behavior, nutrition, medicine, and other fields of interest have posited theories trying to explain why individuals-even those aware of the harm-fail to control their weight in certain instances. Based on the theories of goal conflict model of eating behavior and of goal priming, studies have suggested relative success using diet-reminders as a useful situational intervention in reactivating weight-loss goal, as well as suppressing thoughts associated with food pleasure right at the time of consumption for restrained eaters. In another initiative studying the same issue, the British Royal Society for Public Health promoted ample discussion on media regarding the adoption of activity-equivalent labels on food-packaging in order to show consumers how much exercise they needed to burn intaken calories. However, both initiatives have gathered little empirical evidence of their efficiency and researchers are now claiming for more studies on the issue. An experiment using both methods and further advancing knowledge in this field, has been conducted in a laboratory simulating the real set of menu choices available at a well-known fast-food chain. Four experimental types of stimulus (no information given, amount of calories, diet reminders, and activity equivalent labels) were defined and tested on more than five hundred individuals. Using analysis of covariances (ANCOVAs) to reduce the noise of other variables, results have suggested a significant reduction on the amount of calories ordered from the menu due to goal priming effects. Additionally, a new finding suggests activity equivalent labels may potentialize a reduction of calorie-intake in restrained eaters who also exercise regularly. This is the first experiment combining and comparing both types of intervention - diet reminders and activity equivalent labels -, and advancing knowledge regarding the use of goal priming to promote healthy eating behaviors. Furthermore, this study has managerial implications, especially in the form of an insight for public policies regarding decision-behavior.
