Urban Living Labs emerged in the past decade as spatially embedded multi-stakeholder integrating forms of urban experimentation. They pose as key-nodes for transforming urban governance and generating new, innovative responses to pressing wicked planning and sustainability issues for cities in transition. In Sweden various such projects have been initiated in various locales as parts of European projects that connect different locales. The present Degree Project seeks to examine mechanisms through which Urban Living Labs seek the transformation of established structures towards a more sustainable future in the Swedish context. It does so by analyzing five such projects that have been established in different urban areas in Sweden. In this process it also examines the roles of main actors who play a prominent role in the framework of this form of urban experimentation. This is succeeded through employing a mixed-method approach as a response to the above questions. The main findings point towards the need for extensive networking and exchange of practices between different locales within Sweden and highlight the potentials of urban experimentation for the transformation of the role of main actors. The present Degree Project concludes by reflecting on the future of Urban Living Labs and urban experimentation.

Perverted in Neon is collection of short fictions engaged with various facets of modern popular culture. In its stories, a washed-up rocker enlists the aid of pigeons to deliver messages to his estranged wife; a writer obsessed with finding out what “really” happened to Andy Kaufman is pushed into the fringes of his own life; a kid on restriction discovers a secret level to a video game that threatens to change the nature of his reality; a woman on Airbnb advertises her home—and her life—to potential house renters. The characters throughout this collection tread among the desperate and downtrodden, often seeing some faint impression of hope in the distance, something worth continuing to fight for. Perverted in Neon challenges traditional distinctions of literary genres, often incorporating elements of non-fictional pop culture into fictional worlds, and vice-versa. The stories throughout aim to interrogate some notion of emotional maturity, or lack thereof—characters who think they understand the world, but quickly realize that they understand only their most immediate desires. / MFA

Development Of Load Measurement Technique For Arbitrary Shapes

Obtaining aerodynamic forces and moments about all three orthogonal axes for arbitrary shapes at arbitrary orientations in a fast manner via a measurement technique specific to Cal Poly’s low-speed wind tunnel to continually obtain the forces and moments under quasi-steady conditions is explored. A Continuous Rotation Technique (CR) uses a 6-DOF load cell and stepper motor to rotate an object about an axis for a complete rotation. The forces and moments acting upon the object pass through the stepper motor and interface plates and recorded by the load cell as the object is rotated continuously a finite number of rotations. An optical encoder installation tracks the progress of a rotation serving indicator between the subsequent rotations to determine starting angles and body slippage. Average loading of measurements at each timestep along the average time for rotation is found. This dataset along the average time is placed in 1-degree bins and averaged to a final dataset of load measurements at 0.5-degree intervals for a complete 360-degree load map. Testing of this technique is performed on aspect ratio 1 circular cylinder and for a sphere. These test cases are representative of the 3D flow features that are prevalent for bodies of finite aspect ratios. The airloads on these canonical shapes were used to calibrate the measurement technique deriving similarity with prior work performed at Georgia Tech's wind tunnel. This thesis showcases the repeatability of the results in a different and smaller wind tunnel with improved certainty on angle measurements. The scope of the thesis tackles the showcase of an initial proof of concept for the incorporation of such a novel measurement technique using Cal Poly resources.

Application of 1,5-Diaza-3,7-diphosphacyclooctane (P₂N₂) Ligands Towards Ni- and Pd-Catalyzed Cross-Couplings

Contemporary challenges in synthetic organic chemistry require innovative solutions. The discovery of highly-effective and readily accessible scaffolds drives the ever expanding scope of catalytic transformations. This dissertation outlines the repurposing of 1,5-Diaza-3,7-diphosphacyclooctanes (P₂N₂) ligands, commonly employed in inorganic or coordination chemistry, towards organic cross-coupling reactions. Despite their prominence in energy-storage applications, P₂N₂ ligands have been underexplored in catalytic C-C bond formation reactions. Chapter 1 provides a detailed introduction to late transition metal catalysis and the history of P₂N₂ ligands. Chapter 2 outlines the discovery of P^(Cy)₂N^(ArCF3)₂ as a powerful P₂N₂ ligand for the Ni-catalyzed reductive cross-coupling of aryl iodides with aldehydes. Chapter 3 details the extrapolation of the Ni/P^(Cy)₂N^(ArCF3)₂ catalyst system to the related, but less established, redox-neutral α-arylation of primary alcohols. Chapter 4 highlights the applicability of P₂N₂ ligands towards Ni- and Pd-catalyzed Mizoroki-Heck reactions. High-throughput experimentation (HTE) indicated a range of hits with P₂N₂ ligands compared to established ligands in Heck-type couplings. We discovered that absolute site selectivity of C-C bond formation could be controlled by simply altering the phosphorus substituent on the P₂N₂ ligand for the coupling of aryl triflates with styrenes. Notably, this degree of selectivity was not observed with conventional ligands. Chapter 5 focuses on the preparation of the P₂N₂ ligands. Finally, chapter 6 offers a perspective on future developments of P₂N₂ ligands and the prospective directions of their application in transition metal-catalyzed transformations.

Improving Aerospace Engineering Laboratory Accessibility by Web Exporting Classes and Tasks

In recent years, changes to the aerospace engineering curriculum have moved the laboratory classes ahead in the four year program. In an effort to alleviate the introduction of prerequisite and scheduling problems resulting from the curriculum changes, a study into the approach of making laboratory classes more accessible was initiated. Two options are in the process of being implemented as a solution to current and future curriculum obstacles as a result of this study. First, the first semester laboratory class has been successfully converted to an introduction to laboratory procedures class with the option of taking the lecture portion via the Web. Secondly, present preparations are underway to offer the entire introductory laboratory class via the Web. An in-depth analysis into laboratory tasks selected for the introductory class on laboratory procedures is presented, along with methods implemented, current results and suggestions for the future complete conversion into a virtual class.

High-throughput experiment platform development for machine learning on chemical reactivity

High-throughput experimentation (HTE) is a form of accelerated testing which allows for many hundreds or thousands of experiments to be conducted in parallel or in rapid sequence. Recent advances in chemical reaction miniaturization have enabled HTE application toward chemical reaction exploration, and the resultant datasets present exciting opportunities for the incorporation of machine learning (ML) with organic chemistry to expedite reaction optimization and discovery. Disclosed herein is a modular HTE chemistry reaction platform with rapid and inexpensive data acquisition capabilities for training ML algorithms on organic chemistry. Comprising almost entirely off-the-shelf components and algorithms which will be made open-source, this platform facilitates data democratization through distributed generation. Underpinning this workflow is an innovative titration-based analysis method for semi-automated and quantitative conversion data acquisition at a rate of under fifteen seconds per sample. Requisite to this platform’s success are solutions to solid and liquid reagent distribution, reaction incubation, and fast, quantitative reaction analysis which is demonstrated in a proof-of-concept screening of the SNAr reaction toward the synthesis of proteolysis targeting chimera (PROTACs).
