Boundary Notions: A Sonic Art Portfolio

Fure, Ashley Rose 19 September 2013 (has links)
I offer this dissertation as a survey and a story: a survey of my work across the field of sonic art and a story of my progressive compulsion toward sound that conveys touch. This haptic sensibility sharpens from Susurrus (2006) through Soma (2012), manifesting in a fixation on the impact of sound on bodies and the impact of bodies on sound. Both the visceral sensation of hearing and the manner in which movement imprints onto acoustic phenomena concern me. My musical forms are conceived not as abstract arrangements of objects (or notes) but as complex physical confrontations that produce audible byproducts. I compose primarily with chaotic spectra, mixing raw noise from found objects with extended instrumental techniques. These timbres front an acoustic wildness intentionally abated in conventional instrumental practice. And yet, the precision of classical instruments opens avenues of transformation closed to unmediated noise. Virtuosity and crudeness face-off in my work, circling an aesthetic region between embellishment and fact, between sound as a carrier of aesthetic intent and sound as a subsidiary effect of action. The ten works presented in this portfolio include eight compositions scored for a range of ensembles, from soloist to orchestra, with and without electronics, as well as two interactive multimedia installations. Dramatic links between physical movement and musical form arise across this output. In my installations, I posit causal relationships between visible stimuli (spinning strings, spatial structures, moving bodies) and resultant sounds. In my electroacoustic works, I attend to the implied weight of spatialized sound – as though a gesture’s trajectory through arrayed speakers were informed by gravity. In my acoustic music, I bring the muscular strain behind instrumental technique to the perceptual fore. My professional activities shift regularly between concert music and installation art and between acoustic and electroacoustic contexts. Passing between these genres stretches the boundaries of my creative practice and forces me to consistently reframe notions of ritual and form. Within each platform, I aim to stage visceral aesthetic encounters that, as Francis Bacon once hoped for his paint, bypass the brain and go directly to the nervous system. / Music

A Recording and Commissioning Project Aimed at Developing New Repertoire for Pre-College and Early-College Saxophonists Focused on the Early Applications of Extended Techniques.

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: Composers and performers alike are pushing the limits of expression with an ever-expanding sonic palette. There has also been a great expansion of saxophone repertoire over the past few decades. This has lead to an increasing number of advanced pieces incorporating saxophone extended techniques. As younger saxophonists discover these compositions, they too become inspired to implement these techniques in their own playing. There is a need for broader selections of introductory to intermediate compositions with saxophone extended techniques. It is the goal of this project to expand this repertoire for pre-college and early-college saxophonists. These target-level saxophonists are those who have already begun their studies in extended techniques. Three commissioned composers have contributed pieces for this target level of saxophonist with the purpose of bridging the gap between first attempts of extended techniques and the advanced pieces that already exist. Saxophonists who have the standard techniques to perform compositions such as Sonata for E-flat Alto Saxophone and Piano by Paul Creston will be suited to approach these compositions. In addition to the compositions, the author has composed short warm up exercises, utilizing selected extended techniques. A professional recording of the resulting compositions and exercises are also included. The enclosed document will provide a performer's analysis to help instructors of potential performers navigate the extended techniques and provide insight on other challenging aspects of the compositions. It is not the intention of the following document to teach the individual techniques. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Music 2015

Palavras-chave: violoncelo; música nova; interpretação; técnicas expandidas / Abstract: The goal of this work was the study of new pieces for violoncello written by Brazilian Composers that use expanded techniques, in order to detail these techniques to facilitate the work of cellists and composers. This research analised the reasons that drive performers away from these pieces, and isolated different aspects of Contemporary Music performance with study suggestions. The results of this work were exercises that start to fill the absence of study material for extended techniques, new compositions - compiled in the appendix - and interviews with leading performers in the contemporary music field. Most of the repertoire has not been edition and/or been made available to the public. The research that deals with the interpretation of trumpet music mainly comprises the trumpet solo repertoire. This research aims to present different possibilities for the interpretation of musical works that contain extended techniques. By using the internet, libraries and personal archive I listed fifty two pieces that were composed exclusively for trumpet ensembles. Fifteen of those works contain elements of extended techniques, being selected the ones that occur most frequently and which are produced by physical means without external intervention, depending exclusively on the interpreter's body (lips, tongue, throat) to be produced. We came to the conclusion of four elements: Pitch Bend, Frullato, Glissando and Half Valve. A total of nine works, which presents at least one element of the extended techniques mentioned, were selected in order to illustrate the possibilities of its interpretation in trumpet ensembles. The most challenging and important parts were highlighted to show how to apply those techniques, which can also be used in other works with similar characteristics.

Extended Techniques in Stanley Friedman's Solus for Unaccompanied Trumpet

Meredith, Scott 05 1900 (has links)
This document examines the technical execution of extended techniques incorporated in the musical structure of Solus, and explores the benefits of introducing the work into the curriculum of a college level trumpet studio. Compositional style, form, technical accessibility, and pedagogical benefits are investigated in each of the four movements. An interview with the composer forms the foundation for the history of the composition as well as the genesis of some of the extended techniques and programmatic ideas.

Interpretation of "No-Re I" (2018) for Flute Solo by Gyu-Bong Yi: An Analytical Study of Korean and Western Fusion with Performance Suggestions about Extended Techniques

Yoon, Hyunsu 05 1900 (has links)
This dissertation serves as an analysis and performance guide for No-Re I for Flute Solo (2018) by Gyu-Bong Yi (이규봉), a work that combines Korean elements and Western compositional techniques. The modern flute, developed in the mid-nineteenth century with the Boehm's Schema, has pushed the boundaries of the instrument through experimentation with new techniques, leading to numerous contemporary works presenting unique challenges for flutists. No-Re I includes passages with various extended techniques and unique combinations, requiring specific solutions to overcome the challenges they present. For example, this dissertation offers specific fingering diagrams and descriptions for executing the double trills used in No-Re I. Additionally, certain notations used by the composer may have limitations in projection or clarity, and this dissertation elucidates the composer's intent based on an interview and provides solutions for these limitations. This research also discusses the fusion of Korean and other East-Asian aesthetics with Western musical language including the works of Isang Yun (1917–1995), a Korean-born musical pioneer, who had a successful career as a composer and educator, especially elaborating on his unique compositional technique, the Haupttöne, which is based on tonal centers influenced by East-Asian philosophy, Korean folk music, and its unique characteristic of ornamenting the main tone.
