Concatenated codes for the multiple-input multiple-output quasi-static fading channel

The use of multiple antennas at the transmitter and/or the receiver promises greatly increased capacity. This can be useful to meet the ever growing demand of wireless connectivity, provided we can find techniques to efficiently exploit the advantages of the Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) system. This work explores the MIMO system in a flat quasi-static fading scenario. Such a channel occurs, for example, in packet data systems, where the channel fade is constant for the duration of a codeword and changes independently from one transmission to another. We first show why it is hard to compute the true constrained modulation outage capacity. As an alternative, we present achievable lower bounds to this capacity based on existing space-time codes. The bounds we compute are the fundamental limits to the performance of these space-time codes under maximum-likelihood decoding, optimal outer codes and asymptotically long lengths. These bounds also indicate that MIMO systems have different behavior under Gaussian signaling (unconstrained input) and under the finite alphabet setting. Our results naturally suggest the use of concatenated codes to approach near-capacity performance. However, we show that a system utilizing an iterative decoder has a fundamental limit – it cannot be universal and therefore it cannot perform arbitrarily close to its outage limit. Next, we propose two different transceiver structures that have good performance. The first structure is based on a novel BCJR-decision feedback decoder which results in performance within a dB of the outage limit. The second structure is based on recursive realizations of space-time trellis codes and uses iterative decoding at the receiver. This recursive structure has impressive performance even when the channel has time diversity. Thus, it forms the basis of a very flexible and robust MIMO transceiver structure.

On multiple-antenna communications: signal detection, error exponent and and quality of service

Motivated by the demand of increasing data rate in wireless communication, multiple-antenna communication is becoming a key technology in the next generation wireless system. This dissertation considers three different aspects of multipleantenna communication. The first part is signal detection in the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication. Some low complexity near optimal detectors are designed based on an improved version of Bell Laboratories Layered Space-Time (BLAST) architecture detection and an iterative space alternating generalized expectation-maximization (SAGE) algorithm. The proposed algorithms can almost achieve the performance of optimal maximum likelihood detection. Signal detections without channel knowledge (noncoherent) and with co-channel interference are also investigated. Novel solutions are proposed with near optimal performance. Secondly, the error exponent of the distributed multiple-antenna communication (relay) in the windband regime is computed. Optimal power allocation between the source and relay node, and geometrical relay node placement are investigated based on the error exponent analysis. Lastly, the quality of service (QoS) of MIMO/single-input single- output(SISO) communication is studied. The tradeoff of the end-to-end distortion and transmission buffer delay is derived. Also, the SNR exponent of the distortion is computed for MIMO communication, which can provide some insights of the interplay among time diversity, space diversity and the spatial multiplex gain.

Generalized Spatial Modulation with Correlated Antennas in Rayleigh Fading Channels

It thus reduces interchannel interference (ICI) and receiver complexity over traditional multi-antenna systems. However, the spectral efficiency of SM is low. To improve the spectral efficiency, generalized spatial modulation (GSM) can be used. In this paper, we propose to apply the Alamouti technique with GSM for correlated antennas, and show that the proposed approach provides significant improvement over conventional SM and GSM. Our study also shows the importance of bit-to-antenna mappings and their roles on the selection of appropriate correlated antennas.

Design of a Radio channel Simulator for Aeronautical Communications

When developing a wireless communications system, it is useful to perform simulations of the radio context in which the system has to operate. A radio link is substantially composed by three parts: transmitting segment, transmission channel and receiving segment. We focus our attention on the radio channel propagation. We proposed two geometrical models of a territory corresponding to a determined flight area and, after importing the data needed to estimate our parameters, we compared our results with the channel soundings in literature, obtaining comparable values.

Σε αυτή τη διπλωματική εργασία γίνεται μελέτη του φαινομένου των διαλείψεων. Στα κεφάλαια 1 έως 3 γίνεται θεωρητική μελέτη και περιγραφή των διαλειπτικών φαινομένων. Συγκεκριμένα, πρώτο στο κεφάλαιο γίνεται σύντομη αναφορά των θεμάτων που αναλύονται στα επόμενα κεφάλαια. Στο δεύτερο κεφάλαιο γίνεται ανάλυση των μηχανισμών ηλεκτρομαγνητικής μετάδοσης και δίνεται μια εικόνα των επιδράσεων των μηχανισμών αυτών στο λαμβανόμενο σήμα και αναλύεται ο τρόπος δημιουργίας των διαλείψεων. Στο τρίτο κεφάλαιο αναλύονται οι τρόποι επίδρασης των διαλειπτικών φαινομένων στο ασυρματικό κανάλι και αναφέρονται τρόποι υπολογισμού των επιδράσεων αυτών. Στο τέταρτο κεφάλαιο αναλύονται τα φαινόμενα fading σε κανάλια εσωτερικού χώρου , δίνονται κατάλληλες κατανομές fading για την περιγραφή τέτοιων καναλιών καθώς και μέθοδοι υπολογισμού των επιπτώσεών τους . Στο πέμπτο κεφάλαιο αναλύονται τα φαινόμενα fading σε κανάλια εξωτερικού χώρου δίνονται κατάλληλες κατανομές fading για την περιγραφή τέτοιων καναλιών καθώς και μέτρα επίδοσης για τις συγκεκριμένες κατανομές. Στο έκτο κεφάλαιο αναφέρονται πειραματικές μέθοδοι μέτρησης των διαλειπτικών φαινομένων για κανάλια εξωτερικού χώρου, για κανάλια εξωτερικού χώρου και για σύνθετα κανάλια εξωτερικού/εσωτερικού χώρου, και γίνεται σύγκριση των πειραματικών και θεωρητικών τιμών. Στο έβδομο κεφάλαιο γίνεται προσομοίωση σε περιβάλλον MatLab και συγκρίνονται τα αποτελέσματα των προσομοιώσεων με τις θεωρητικές τιμές για αδιαμόρφωτο φορέα και για τις κυριότερες διαλειπτικές κατανομές. Στο τέλος της εργασίας γίνεται σύντομη σύγκριση των μεθόδων προσομοίωσης με τις πειραματικές μεθόδους και αναφέρονται οι πιθανοί λόγοι απόκλισης των τιμών από την θεωρητική ανάλυση. / In this work the fading phenomenon is studied. In chapters 1, 2 and 3 fading channels are described theoretically. In chapters 4 and 5 are given suitable fading distributions and perfomance mesures for indoor and outdoor channels respectively. In chapter 6 are described experimental procedures for the study of the fading effects. Chapter 7 deals with simulation methods of fading channels and at the end the results of experimental procedures are compared to these of simulation methods.

Low complexity channel models for approximating flat Rayleigh fading in network simulations

The intricate dependency of networking protocols upon the performance of the wireless channel motivates the investigation of network channel approximations for fading channels. Wireless networking protocols are increasingly being designed and evaluated with the assistance of networking simulators. While evaluating networking protocols such as medium access control, routing, and reliable transport, the network channel model, and its associated capacity, will drastically impact the achievable network throughput. Researcher relying upon simulation results must therefore use extreme caution to ensure the use of similar channel models when performing protocol comparisons. Some channel approximations have been created to mimic the behavior of a fading environment, however there exists little to no justification for these channel approximations. This dissertation addresses the need for a computationally efficient fading channel approximation for use in network simulations. A rigorous flat fading channel model was developed for use in accuracy measurements of channel approximations. The popular two-state Markov model channel approximation is analyzed and shown to perform poorly for low to moderate signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). Three novel channel approximations are derived, with multiple methods of parameter estimation. Each model is analyzed for both statistical performance and network performance. The final model is shown to achieve very accurate network throughput performance by achieving a very close matching of the frame run distributions. This work provides a rigorous evaluation of the popular two-state Markov model, and three novel low complexity channel models in both statistical accuracy and network throughput performance. The novel models are formed through attempts to match key statistical parameters of frame error run and good frame run statistics. It is shown that only matching key parameters is insufficient to achieve an acceptable channel approximation and that it is necessary to approximate the distribution of frame error duration and good frame run duration. The final novel channel approximation, the three-state run-length model, is shown to achieve a good approximation of the desired distributions when some key statistical parameters are matched.

Distributed Space-Time Block Codes in Wireless Cooperative Networks

In cooperative networks, relays cooperate and form a distributed multi-antenna system to provide spatial diversity. In order to achieve high bandwidth efficiency, distributed space-time block codes (DSTBCs) are proposed and have been studied extensively. Among all DSTBCs, this thesis focuses on the codes which are single-symbol maximum likelihood (ML) decodable and can achieve the full diversity order. This thesis presents four works on single-symbol ML decodable DSTBCs. The first work proposes the row-monomial distributed orthogonal space-time block codes (DOSTBCs). We find an upper bound of the data-rate of the row-monomial DOSTBC and construct the codes achieving this upper bound. In the second work, we first study the general DOSTBCs and derive an upper bound of the data-rate of the DOSTBC. Secondly, we propose the row-monomial DOSTBCs with channel phase information (DOSTBCs-CPI) and derive an upper bound of the data-rate of those codes. Furthermore, we find the actual row-monomial DOSTBCs-CPI which achieve the upper bound of the data-rate. In the third and fourth works of this thesis, we focus on error performance analysis of single-symbol ML decodable DSTBCs. Specifically, we study the distributed Alamouti's code in dissimilar cooperative networks. In the third work, we assume that the relays are blind relays and we derive two very accurate approximate bit error rate (BER) expressions of the distributed Alamouti's code. In the fourth work, we assume that the relays are CSI-assisted relays. When those CSI-assisted relays adopt the amplifying coefficients that was proposed in [33] and widely used in many previous publications, upper and lower bounds of the BER of the distributed Alamouti's code are derived. Very surprisingly, the lower bound indicates that the code cannot achieve the full diversity order when the CSI-assisted relays adopt the amplifying coefficients proposed in [33]. Therefore, we propose a new threshold-based amplifying coefficient and it makes the code achieve the full diversity order two. Clear-air radioclimatological modeling for terrestrial line of sight links in Southern Africa.

This thesis has investigated radioclimatological study in a clear-air environment as applicable to terrestrial line of sight link design problems. Radioclimatological phenomena are adequately reviewed both for the precipitation effect and clear-air effect. The research focuses more on the clear-air effect of radioclimatological studies. Two Southern African countries chosen for case study in the report are Botswana and South Africa. To this end, radiosonde data gathered in Maun, Botswana and Durban, South Africa are used for model formulation and verification. The data used in the thesis ranges from three years to ten years in these two stations. Three to ten years of refractivity data gathered in Botswana and South Africa is used for the model formulation. On the other hand, eight months signal level measurement data recorded from the terrestrial line of sight link set up between Howard College and Westville Campuses of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban South Africa is used for model verification. Though various radioclimatic parameters could affect radio signal propagation in the clear-air environment, this report focuses on two of these parameters. These two parameters are the geoclimatic factor and effective earth radius factor (k-factor). The first parameter is useful for multipath fading determination while the second parameter is very important for diffraction fading, modeling and characterization. The two countries chosen have different terrain and topographical structures; thus further underlying the choice for these two parameters. While Maun in Botswana is a gentle flat terrain, Durban in South Africa is characterized by hilly and mountainous terrain structure, which thus affects radioclimatological modeling in the two countries. Two analytical models have been proposed to solve clear-air radioclimatic problems in Southern Africa in the thesis. The first model is the fourth order polynomial analytical expression while the second model is the parabolic equation. The fourth order polynomial model was proposed after an extensive analysis of the eight month signal level measurement data gathered in Durban, South Africa. This model is able to predict the fade exceedance probabilities as a function of fade depth level. The result from the fourth order polynomial model is found to be comparable with other established multipath propagation model reviewed in the thesis. Availability of more measurement data in more location will be necessary in future to further refine this model. The second model proposed to solve clear-air propagation problem in the thesis is the modified parabolic equation. We chose this technique because of its strength and its simplistic adaptation to terrestrial line of sight link design problem. This adaptation is possible because, the parabolic equation can be modified to incorporate clear-air parameters. Hence this modification of the parabolic equation allows the possibility of a hybrid technique that incorporates both the statistical and mathematical procedures perfectly into one single process. As a result of this, most of the very important phenomena in clear-air propagation such as duct occurrence probabilities, diffraction fading and multipath fading is captured by this technique. The standard parabolic equation (SPE) is the unmodified parabolic equation which only accounts for free space propagation, while the modified parabolic equation (MPE) is the modified version of the parabolic equation. The MPE is classified into two in the thesis: the first modified parabolic equation (MPE1) and second modified parabolic equation (MPE2). The MPE1 is designed to incorporate the geoclimatic factor which is intended to study the multipath fading effect in the location of study. On the other hand, MPE2 is the modified parabolic equation designed to incorporate the effective earth radius factor (k-factor) intended to study the diffraction fading in the location of study. The results and analysis of the results after these modifications confirm our expectation. This result shows that signal loss is due primarily to diffraction fading in Durban while in Botswana, signal loss is due primarily to multipath. Cross-layer design for the transmission of multimedia traffic over fading channels.

Providing guarantees in the Quality of Service (QoS) has become essential to the transmission of multimedia traffic over wireless links with fading channels. However this poses significant challenges due to the variable nature of such channels and the diverse QoS requirements of different applications including voice, video and data. The benefits of dynamic adaptation to system and channel conditions have been accepted, but the true potential of optimized adaptation is lost if the layers operate independently, ignoring possible interdependencies between them. Cross-layer design mechanisms exploit such interdependencies to provide QoS guarantees for the transmission of multimedia traffic over fading channels. Channel adaptive M-QAM schemes are examples of some of the earliest works in the area of cross-layer design. However, many of the original schemes use the assumption that thresholds designed for AWGN channels can be directly applied to slow-fading channels. The thresholds are calculated with a commonly used approximation bit error rate (BER) expression and the first objective of the thesis was to study the accuracy of this commonly used expression in fading channels. It is shown that that the inaccuracy of the expression makes it unsuitable for use in the calculation of the threshold points for an adaptive M-QAM system over fading channels. An alternative BER expression is then derived which is shown to be far more accurate than the previous one. The improved accuracy is verified through simulations of the system over Nakagami-m fading channels. Many of the cross-layer adaptation mechanisms that address the QoS provisioning problem only use the lower layers (physical and data link) and few explore the possibility of using higher layers. As a result, restrictions are placed on the system which introduces functional limitations such as the inability to insert more than one class of traffic in a physical layer frame. The second objective in this thesis was to design a physical and application layer cross-layer adaptation mechanism which overcomes this limitation. The performance results of the scheme in both AWGN and fading channels show that the cross-layer mechanism can be efficiently utilized for the purposes of providing error rate QoS guarantees for multimedia traffic transmissions over wireless links. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2009.
