Automatic Pitch Detection and Shifting of Musical Tones in Real Time

Kim, Jinho January 2013 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Sergio Alvarez / Musical notes are acoustic stimuli with specific properties that trigger a psychological perception of pitch. Pitch is directly associated with the fundamental frequency of a sound wave, which is typically the lowest frequency of a periodic waveform. Shifting the perceived pitch of a sound wave is most easily done by changing the playback speed, but this method warps some of the characteristics and changes the time scale. This thesis aims to accurately shift the pitch of musical notes while preserving its other characteristics, and it implements this in real time on an Android device. There are various methods of detecting and shifting pitch, but in the interests of simplicity, accuracy, and speed, a three step process is used. First, the fundamental pitch of a stable periodic section of the signal is found using the Yin pitch detection algorithm. Secondly, pitch marks that represent the local peak of energy are found, each spaced out by roughly one period (inverse of the fundamental frequency). Lastly, these marks are used in the Pitch Synchronous Overlap and Add (PSOLA) algorithm to generate a new signal with the desired fundamental frequency and similar acoustical characteristics to the original signal. / Thesis (BS) — Boston College, 2013. / Submitted to: Boston College. Acquisition and Generalization of Pitch Probability Profiles

Collett, MEGHAN 14 August 2013 (has links)
Krumhansl (1990) has proposed that our sense of tonality is based, in part, on the perception and internal representation of the hierarchies of pitch class salience in music. It has further been proposed that regularities in pitch patterns may be acquired through statistical learning. To further explore this proposal, we conducted two experiments in which musically untrained participants were exposed to tone sequences generated from one of two pitch profiles: Lydian or Hypophrygian. Tone sequences were randomly generated from event frequency profiles computed by Huron and Veltman (2006), with frequencies converted to probability of occurrence. Exposure trials consisted of 100 sequences generated from one mode for half the participants and from the other mode for the remaining participants. Sequences generated from the unexposed mode appeared in test trials only. Following the exposure trials, testing involved pairing exposed and unexposed tone sequences at each of three levels of distinctiveness. Versions of the tone sequences were constructed to be more or less distinctive following an algorithm described by Smith & Schmuckler (2004). In Experiment 1, participants were asked to record which pair member they preferred and in Experiment 2, participants were asked to record which pair member was more familiar. In both experiments, both groups received the same test pairs. Results of Experiment 1 indicated no preference for any tone sequence type. However, results of Experiment 2 revealed participants had acquired knowledge of the exposed pitch distribution, and were able to generalize to the more distinctive level. The findings support those of Loui, Wessel, and Hudson Kam (2010) in terms of a dissociation between recognition and preference. We suggest this may be due to methodology, stimulus-type and participant strategy. The findings also support Krumhansl (1990), as salient pitches appear to be important in the recognition of pitch probability profiles. / Thesis (Master, Psychology) -- Queen's University, 2013-08-13 16:26:46.099

An analysis of pitch and duration in material used to test L2 processing of words

van de Vijver, Ruben, Sennema, Anke, Zimmer–Stahl, Anne January 2006 (has links)
The material reported on in this paper is part of a set of experiments in which the role of Information Structure on L2 processing of words is tested. Pitch and duration of 4 sets of experimental material in German and English are measured and analyzed in this paper. The well-known finding that accent boosts duration and pitch is confirmed. Syntactic and lexical means of marking focus, however, do not give the duration and the pitch of a word an extra boost.

Carbon material and property of hole are appraised while making preface by the law of mask works

Cheng, Hao-Yu 10 August 2010 (has links)
The hitting the carbon material looks of hole of ordered structure relatively has its more apparent physics and chemical characteristic in the traditional powder sample, this research makes hitting the carbon material of hole in order to utilize the law of mask works and making and lying between the qualification of the view structure to it of preface structure. Utilize different carbon precursor containing carbon proportion, for instance: Carbon material of hole in cane sugar, phenol aldehyde tree ester and pitch come to prepare; And to the structure of hole, for instance: The hole shrinks the homogeneity, hole shrinking rate ,etc. the physical and not last comparison at chemical property. First of all, utilizing has no emulsification to get together (not add any to hand in and unite pharmaceutical) Styrene the single /last sulfic acid potassium / water prepare by polystyrene ball in system. The styrene thickness is reduced to adjust the single weight ratio to styrene of initial pharmaceutical and look on as, then the ball size of polystyrene is diminished, controlling all kinds of technology of the spheroid, can already produce the polystyrene ball under the diameter 100 nm. Use 4 second silicic acid / ammonia water / deionized water / ethanol prepare and oxidize the silicon ball two times on the other hand, experiment course make use of adjust ammonia water in not reacting ear count than may be controlled and oxidized the ball size of silicon 2 times relatively. Experiment to can produce by the twoes of the 100 nms diameter because it oxidize by silicon ball, cause accord with endure research to a the above-mentioned spheroid particle by rice grades of material size already all fully. The second part of experiment includes the carbon material of carbon proportion to prepare in order to utilize differently out and hit the carbon material of hole in order for the source, thereafter utilize SEM, X-ray and Ramam After the instrument analyzes, sum up the property difference of every carbon material and characteristic trend. The result of study reveals, in order to include carbons carbon material structure of hole prepared out of the carbon material source the lower in proportion, its diameter of average hole is smaller, the shrinking rate of hole is larger, the hole wall is thinner and slightly broken in shape. Another result reveals, the graphite intensity of the carbon material of hole relates to material source own one's share structure of carbon, contain benzene ring many line molecular structure and reticular formation facilitate, raise carbonization graphite intensity react, and molecule layer distance light; The influence containing benzene and surrounding the structure among them is superior to the reticular formation. In addition, the experimental result has revealed the material grade of hole in the average diameter of carbon material of hole has already reached for 350 nm.
